• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Bottom line....I can't take my Spyder to Germany and I'm very, very disappointed.

My baby got picked up last Thursday with my household goods to be shipped and yesterday afternoon I got a call explaining that the :spyder: is too big to be shipped as a motorcycle. They said they could crate it up but the crate would be too big to put in the shipping container unless they put it on its side. :yikes: Now I'm no genius but that didn't sound like a good idea to me.

Because of the holidays, time constraints, and distance to a place to ship as a car I can't even send it over as a car so off into storage he (yes my :spyder: is a he!) goes for two years.

So now I'll get over there and get all of my Spyder upgrades that I was going to do during the winter and not have him there to upgrade. :gaah:

So to say I'm bummed is an understatement. I just hope that weather conditions stay favorable so my dog can go with me. So any military people out there with plans on going overseas with their :spyder:....don't count on it at this time.

So, here's an open suggestion to BRP and/or some dealership - if possible - to offer a service to deconstruct and put a Spyder back into original crating so that it can be shipped overseas in situations like this.

But I REALLY hope your dog gets to make the trip.

Sell it and buy another in 2 years...letting it sit for 2 years will kill it...
 
Since I only have a few days left I'm a bit short on options. So today as all of my stuff was being hauled away for storage I was calling around to see how I could get it over there. It doesn't qualify as a POV so no go there and it's a bit pricey for me to send it over commercially. I just can't see shipping it sideways as was suggested. And I'm not very mechanically inclined to try and break it down and re-assemble it.

But I was able to get it worked out so that it won't go into storage for two years....I'll just have my Dad watch it for me...at least through the winter. Maybe he'll be able to sell it for me when spring/summer comes along....provided he doesn't fall in love with it and decide to keep it ;) And at least when I come home for my daughter's graduation I'll have something to ryde.

So my plan is to keep lurking on the site while I'm over there. Lots of great people here and I appreciate the information and support.

I don't think shipping it sidesways is too good of an idea.

To ship it, don't you have to drain the fluids? Take all of the oil and gas out. Remove the two hoses from the brake master cylinder resivoirs and put them together with an air hose mender fitting. Battery shouldn't matter as it is already on it's side. Make sure it is fully charged. If the :spyder2: is tied down good in the crate, you should be good to go! Like lamont said, the riding in Germany is GREAT............in the Summer!

We used to ship a lot of bikes to Japan in the early 90s before their economy went south. All the fluids had to be drained and the battery had to be disconnected, maybe even removed. We got a call one day just as a shipment was getting ready to be loaded in a container and someone found a battery still in one bike. they delayed the loading until they could get someone there to remove it( they were only a loading union and couldn't do it).
Just a few months ago I tried to retrieve a chainsaw that had been impounded in O'hare because there was a drop of gas found and they confiscated it. It had gone through british customs on it's way to somewhere in South or Central America and when it was being loaded on another flight it was pulled. It was brand new and it was only tested before he brought it. He said they drained it and blew out the lines,but the bumping around during the take offs and landings had jiggled a drop of fuel and it was taken. When he contacted me to attempt to retrieve it....oddly enough none of the people in that department knew where it might have gone..hmmmm. Got to love Chicago.
I had orders to Hawaii in about '72 and they wouldn't pay to ship my just acquired 428 CJ Mustang (1969). I turned down the transfer and got out after my time was up, never regretted it for a second. I already had lived in Hawaii for 4 years, just before and right after it became a state. I didn't think it had gotten better.
Although you say your not mechanical enough, I think if you had a little more notice you could have had a nice crate built to support it on it's side.Since all the fluids have to be drained,I think it would probably travel pretty well like that.You'd have been able to use it for the return trip as well.
 
Shipping

Does not look to be to difficult to remove the front wheels and suspension.
Then ship the parts separately, not sure this would get you into a motorcycle crate, but I would be willing to try anything to get is shipped.
 
I didn't have to drain all the fluids. The only thing transportation told me was to have a statement that I disconnected the battery and drained the gas. And when I talked with the dealer they said you technically can't drain all of the gas since it's fuel injected. I shipped a bike back from Japan back in the 80's and didn't have any problems like this. I think it's just the size and the novelty of the Spyder that has them concerned. It's only for two years....
So if any of you see a 78 y/o riding a red Spyder with a young thang on the back (my step mother), wave hello to my Dad!
 
If you park it for the winter...

be sure and use a battery tender. There are some bargains now on the net. Deltran makes a real good single battery model called the plus for about 37. HDL has a good sale going on right now and they are good people to do business. You can just plug it in and forget it. It won't over charge your battery.
