Suppose you're on an extended trip and have reached oil change time. There are no dealers around for an oil/filter change. AND, you have used the extra set or two of filters you took on the trip.

If you drained and refreshed the oil. How many additional miles(beyond 4,600) on the filters would you feel comfortable with? Or, would you trust putting the extended mileage on them.

Use Amsoil, go 6,000 miles between services and still have better protection than when using BRP lubricants. That's what I do anyway.

But, if I did get to this hypothetical point. I would be fine with a drain and refill on the old filters if I had to. Certainly much better than continuing to run on old oil.

Unless there is something going on in your motor you should be able to change the oil and do another 4000 miles. After the first couple of oil changes there should be little accumulation in the filters. Like every one else this is just my opinion.

I wouldn't be much concerned about the filter....it's the OIL that matters. If you are using a quality Full Syn Oil ( like Valvoline 4 strke for MTc's ) I think you are good to go..................Mike :thumbup:

I agree, if you have to change it without the filter on the road, then get it done and ride on....or leave it until you get back and run over your miles. Personally, I'd follow up with a full and proper change when I got back home. On our KLR the bike is so hard on oil we do a change without a new filter half way through the season, and swap out the filter at the end. Do what works best, your fine.

Oh ! If you have ran through all your sanitary supplies and are still many tank fulls of fuel away from
a dealer. Just park it near the closest Starbucks and wait for the end of the world as you know it.

As I see it...

You will be fine with just the oil change. These filters with the new oils do not have to be changed with each oil change. It is just common practice and with the low cost makes sense. :thumbup:
