• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

No 'Read Card' warning message and 2016 RT won't start! Any ideas?

Hi

2016 RT Ltd, won't start. Battery is good and will crank if bypassed at the starter. I do notice now that I no longer have the 'Read Card' safety message and the dash goes straight to the regular speedo mode.

Any ideas on where to start. All fuses in the frunk are good.

Not sure where the proper circuit to check would be. There is a couple of different circuits that become active in stages after the key is turned on. They are intended to become active a few seconds apart so that everything does not suddenly activate all at once. Maybe to prevent a sudden surge, or maybe some other reason? The ones that come on are on different circuit breakers. The one that makes the read manual notice pop up is separate and has some other things coming on at the same time. Some of the things that have to be right before the starter will operate are the engine kill switch, the message that goes to the ecm when you push the button to turn off the read manual message, and maybe a few others depending on what gear change system you have. The paddle shifter one is supposed to go to neutral on its own before the engine starts. Not sure if the foot shift jumps to neutral or you have to put it in neutral with your foot. All those have safety relays that must be positioned right or the engine won't start. It may not be in the computer at all. It could be one of the switches or one of the safety relays not functioning that is blocking the current from activating the starter.

Checking for fault codes might tell you where to go specifically to locate the offending relay. If not, you will need to follow the wiring diagram to find which switches and relays to test.

Just for example: if the kill switch is not operating properly, that will block the system from continuing with the pre-start procedures.

I have never actually traced one out on a Can Am. I have had relays that got damaged by limbs and brush on a diesel tractor. There is a relay on the seat so you have to have weight on the seat before the starter works. There are 2 different gear selectors that both have to be in a neutral gear position. There is a relay on the rear wheel parking brake that must be locked before the engine will start. there is another relay in the PTO control that must be in a neutral position. The 4WD selector has to be in 2WD. All those are interconnected and must be in the proper position, relay indicator working, before the starter relay will work and the fuel injection pump gets power to it. It is the same sort of thing on the Spyders. The switches, gears, and relays have to be where it is safe to spin the starter and all the sensing devices for them have to be operating properly. Even if all the gears are neutral, brakes locked, seat switch activated, and all other things are set properly, the starter will not spin over and the fuel injection pump will not get power if any wiring or sensor is not telling the system it is all OK. It is like a big logic puzzle you have to solve to see which place to look next. When the tractor would not start the manual said return it to to the dealership for the factory trained techs to fix, but I found information on the web with circuit drawings and pictures of where the components were located, not from Sperry New Holland, but on a forum of New Holland owners with the answers. A couple of hours with a multi-meter sure beat winching the tractor up on a trailer, chaining it down, and dragging it 200 mile round trip to the nearest dealership. Probably another trip to pick it up later and a $500 bill for repairs if I was lucky. Fixed it right here with a soldering gun and some shrink insulators.

Nothing to do with all the safety circuits, but all that extra crap is due to lawyers suing the makers of vehicles because some yoyo started a truck or tractor up in gear and it ran over his car. The 40 or 50 yellow stickers all over the vehicle and covered in dusty grease are also because of the same thing.

Do you hear the fuel pump cycle on when you turn on the key? If not check to see if the kill switch has been turned off by mistake.
