There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. Instead of going out of my way to go to my dealership for a replacement gas cap I picked up a Stant. When I am in the area or maybe need service I will bring them the broken one.Why go get a cheap BRP one again.Hopefully the Stant will last

Cheap, cheap, cheap!!!!!

I'll be getting a better cap soonest. Cheap, cheap, cheap. I wonder where ( what country) the BRP cap was manufactured in????

Hi trooper,

Re: My BRP gas cap that broke has a sticker on it that says Mexico

Having spent nearly a year consulting for a manufacturing company located in Mexico why am I not surprised.

Twice had my petrol cap make the dreaded clicking noise at petrol stations, even though I always very careful to make sure I don't over tighten it. Took 10 minutes of swearing to get it off the last time so following a recommendation from PMK in another tread I ordered a Stant one. They are pretty cheap though shipping to NZ cost me twice what the price of the cap:-) Only had it a couple of weeks but seems to work as it should and is certainly better for my piece of mind.

I don't normally dish BRP but I've got to say this time they really are munters over this. First cap on my RS was apparently a fire hazard so there was a recall replacing it with one that encourages you to not tighten it properly in case you can't get it off again. Every vehicle on the planet has a petrol cap so how hard can it be to find one that works? Anyway end of rant:-)

If you have an Advance Auto parts or Pep boys near you pick-up Stant gas cap #10835 at Advance or 11835 at Pep boys. I've been using this cap over a year without any problems. I keep the OE as a souvenir :roflblack::roflblack:. Another member I ride with just put this cap on after his failed a few weeks ago.[/QUOTEBought a Stant today. I had trouble removing my cap twice so I thought I'd avoid having to break it off in the future.

This happened to my ride mate on the morning we left on the Bun Burner 1500 ride to Canada. We had to delay our start by 2 hrs to get the old cap off and a new one on. We thanked our lucky stars that it happened at the beginning, and not half way to Canada

Ok I have to ask...is this an issue with the 998 gas caps also? And will these gas caps fit on a 2014 ST-L? Thanks, Cindy

I don't know if you have the same issue as us RT owners. But, yes the Stant gas cap will work on your bike the ST, RS and RT all use the same BRP gas crap :roflblack:.

When BRP had the recall on the 2010 gas caps they sent me one to replace mine. I ended up not putting it on before my accident. I still have it in my spare parts collection in the original box. When I see it I remember my 2010 RT and all its recalls. Memories of first year production woes !!!

Yes its the 998 caps as well.

Just to be clear:
  • The original caps GS/RS/RT models 2008 to 2012 used to sometimes vent fumes and I believe there was at least one possible fire where this was thought to have contributed. There was no problem with them breaking though.
  • BRP did a recall on these caps around Jan 2013 to replace them all, any model from 2013 onwards also has the new caps. It's these new caps are the ones that have now started breaking.

The Jan 2013 recall was done by BRP sending caps out to the owners - though dealers were also actively replacing them when Spyders were serviced (that's when mine was replaced).

The 2013 recall caps were bigger and have 'Made in Mexico' on them - I'm not suggesting this is why they break, I just mention this just because it makes them easy to identify.

I think the first mention of this problem was around 18 months after the new caps were issued and it seems to have escalated recently which suggests this is a weakness that develops over time. Of course it is possible the Stant caps we're all frantically buying will also start failing in 18 months time:-)

Probably two possible issues with the 2013+ gas cap:
  • Plastic used if affected by gas fumes and has weakened or was too soft in the first place i.e. wrong spec plastic.
  • Bad design with built in point of failure.

FYI, the large increase in reports of the gas cap getting stuck (clicking) and they cant get it off, to it breaking like the original post, is all on 2014 and 2015 models!!!!! I have not seen a person with a recalled cap complain of this (2010-2013 models).

Again the amount of reports I am seeing about this have gone way up in the last 1-2 months vs prior.

My opinion is something changed about the caps since the 2013 recall. Cheaper material? Some manufacturing process? etc?

Bob

maybe BRP should not buy the very cheapest in the industry....

osm

When they outsource for parts; it's unfortunate that the per unit cost seems to be the main driving force in the purchasing decision.
But rest assured; they're not the only Company that does this! :banghead:

Or are these actually being built by BRP at their Mexican plant? :dontknow:

[/QUOTEThe Stant cap I just bought was made in Mexico.

:agree: My new Stant gas cap has the same Mexico sticker on it like the broken BRP gas cap has :dontknow: :dontknow: :dontknow:

I think this proves my point that this has nothing to do with why the originals are failing and its just bad design. You'll probably find that same factory produces gas caps for all sorts of vehicles that work fine.

Where its made makes no difference but how it's designed does.
