I'll be getting a better cap soonest. Cheap, cheap, cheap. I wonder where ( what country) the BRP cap was manufactured in????
Kaos
My BRP gas cap that broke has a sticker on it that says Mexico
If you have an Advance Auto parts or Pep boys near you pick-up Stant gas cap #10835 at Advance or 11835 at Pep boys. I've been using this cap over a year without any problems. I keep the OE as a souvenir :roflblack::roflblack:. Another member I ride with just put this cap on after his failed a few weeks ago.[/QUOTEBought a Stant today. I had trouble removing my cap twice so I thought I'd avoid having to break it off in the future.

Ok I have to ask...is this an issue with the 998 gas caps also? And will these gas caps fit on a 2014 ST-L? Thanks, Cindy

maybe BRP should not buy the very cheapest in the industry....

Yes its the 998 caps as well.
Just to be clear:
- The original caps GS/RS/RT models 2008 to 2012 used to sometimes vent fumes and I believe there was at least one possible fire where this was thought to have contributed. There was no problem with them breaking though.
- BRP did a recall on these caps around Jan 2013 to replace them all, any model from 2013 onwards also has the new caps. It's these new caps are the ones that have now started breaking.
The Jan 2013 recall was done by BRP sending caps out to the owners - though dealers were also actively replacing them when Spyders were serviced (that's when mine was replaced).
The 2013 recall caps were bigger and have 'Made in Mexico' on them - I'm not suggesting this is why they break, I just mention this just because it makes them easy to identify
I think the first mention of this problem was around 18 months after the new caps were issued and it seems to have escalated recently which suggests this is a weakness that develops over time. Of course it is possible the Stant caps we're all frantically buying will also start failing in 18 months time
Probably two possible issues with the 2013+ gas cap:
[/QUOTEThe Stant cap I just bought was made in Mexico.
- Plastic used if affected by gas fumes and has weakened or was too soft in the first place i.e. wrong spec plastic.
- Bad design with built in point of failure.
:agree: My new Stant gas cap has the same Mexico sticker on it like the broken BRP gas cap has :dontknow: :dontknow: :dontknow:
