Nice Day....Not!

Since it's a nice sunny day,I thought I would around to installing some of the goodies I've got.
Started with the front shocks. Well, had to give that up because I can't figure out how to losen the top bolt? Do I have to remove tupper ware to access it? Any tricks y'all know? :banghead:

Then, I decided to install my hitch. Well, that was a bust too. What size mm wrench do I need to buy? I don't have a wrench/socket that big. :banghead:

I'm next going to try to install the wiring harness for the trailer hitch. Will Murphy raise his ugly head again?

Well on the good side, I get to listen to Armin van Buuren intro his new album live on XM from NY! WooHoo! It's great so far!

I can help you on the socket....36 MM.....
Got nothing on the rest.....

Shocks? No Tupperware needs to be pulled; but it IS a bit tight in there!
You can get a 3/8" drive up in there to work on one side; you'll be good to go with an open-end on the other.

I just changed my shocks on my RS-S. If you want to come up to my place. I have the right wrenches and can do them here. Do you have a shop manual? Need that to show you how to remove the right and left front panels.

The Hitch bolt and nut are only 19 MM. the Axle might be the big one at 36 or so.The hitch bolt slides through the center of the hollow axle bolt. The axle doesn't need to be loosened to install or remove the hitch. when you slide the hitch over the swing arm be cautious of the brake lines on the right side next to the muffler. just hold them out of the way with your right hand and work the hitch in place with your left. It doesn't hurt to put just a little drop of 3 in 1 oil on the swing arm to allow it to slide on eaiser. then just take a flashlight and insure you can see through the axle to confirm it is lined up. slide the long bolt through from the left side, put the nut on and stick a cotter key in the hole and your done. I use a 19mm socket on the left side and a 19mm open end on the right.

Although we initially think the Tupperware must be removed, in may cases one can slooowww down and figure how. The input on installing a tow hitch is great, been thinking of adding one in the near future, thanks.

I just take mine to the dealer and have them do it. I learned a LONG time ago what my limitations were...and they're pretty strong when it comes to mechanics.

How to change shocks...

I even got to do it (and I don't read instructions...) but he tells you the tools needed and that getting the top bolt is a PAIN!!! But I did it without removing any tupperware.

 I changed the shocks on mine without removing any tupperware. Your right, slow down, look it over and you can figure it out. I am lucky to have a "Harbor Freight" near by so when I run into a tool I think I might need or if I can't find one that I know I have somewhere, i run over there and buy it. I am the world's worst at not being able to keep up with tools. I know I have bought some things two or three times. :banghead:

Well, I got the harness installed. Why I needed to disconnect the seat strut beats me. I didn't.

For the hitch, I bought one from the guy in Canada that several have bought here on SL's.

It's just getting down in position and getting the right length wrench up in there to remove the top bolt on the shocks is my problem. I just don't bend like I use to and it starts to wierd out my lower back.
Seems that my wrench is too long. Will look for a shorter one tomorrow. I have lots of tools. I even have Clecos but they are not needed to work on a Spyder.

Thanks for the input and the size of the socket and wrench I will have to purchase.

removing shocks

I just did this friday when I put the Pitbull relocators on, it take a 15mm box wrench and socket on a 3/8 inch drive and intense stress with the wrist to break the nut loose, then it gets easier....Good luck my wrists are still sore.

MikeinGA, I had the Shop manual on my lap top that died several months ago. So not any more. But thanks for the offer.

Interesting? I looked up online at sears.com
36 mm wrench is $86. Socket is $8. Hummmm? I think I'll get the socket.
Upon a search, Home Depot doesn't have a socket but does have wrenches in the mid 30's. Lowe's on the other hand lists several options on 36mm sockets.

Re-read post #8. He's saying that u need a 19mm wrench. I'm not sure who's correct but you might want to figure it out before purchasing

If you need to loosen or remove the actual oem rear axle then you need a 36mm socket (or two).

If you pass the hitch bolt through the hole in the oem axle without loosening/removing it then I don't know cos I've not done it.

36MM Story.....

Back in 73 i had to pull the engine in my 71 beetle, I was replacing a jug, And i need a socket to remove the gland nut...36MM, So i went out and bought one thinking' I'll never need a socket that large again...
Then a year later i built a engine for my VW Dune buggy, need it again... So then it sat collecting dust Till 08 when i got a Spyder, When i had to adjust the belt, Guess what' out came the dusty 36, ..., If you have to use a tool even once buy it, If you live long enough you'll probably need it again....
