• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. Notice no investigations listed just complaints. Dealer told me there has to be 2 % affected before that happens. Don't know if that is true or not. Report complaints people that is the only way it is going to happen.

BRP IS notifying the US dealers... I talked to my dealer today about resetting my brake code after I change my pads, and he told me that they were sending letters out, and to expect one... I reminded him that I own a 2012, but at least they're on top of it.

This was information he volunteered to me... I didn't need to ask about it at all. He also mentioned that there is another recall, or service notification on the '12s, but he didn't have the details on hand, and didn't know if it involved my Spyder.

Odd . . . I called my dealer today about a parking brake issue I was having and asked the service department to check the master cylinder for evidence of melting while they had it . . . and he asked me why I would want that checked. I told him about the recall and he knew nothing about it. I wish they had a standard method of communicating . . . some dealers seem very proactive . . . and others very apathetic.

There is no set %. Defect rate to initiate a recall. It depends on the severity and risk. When there are potential fires and explosions, it takes few occurrences.

My employer is a supplier to the global Auto industry. The car mfgrs expect zero defects and we get in trouble at a defect rate of about 100 ppm (parts per million) which is 0.01%, one one hundredth of one per cent. None of these are dangerous. 2% is 20,000 ppm.

2013 RT recall

I talked to BRP this afternoon

The recall is already in place in Canada and dealers either have the fix or begin shipped the fix
BRP is waiting for NHTSA approval on the USA fix, before issuing the USA recall
They suggested I call back on friday, they may know by then.

They checked my VIN and my Spyder could be involved

Just as a note: the BRP person on phone, was pleasant and extremely helpful!

Up to 7 complaints now. C'mon people report your 2013 concerns including boiling gas tank it is easy to do here is the site once again

http://www.safercar.gov/

You can search 2013 Can Am and forget the model to see all complaints posted so far.

Subject: Transport Canada's 30 August 2013 recall notification from BRP on all 2013 Can-Am Spyder RT and ST series roa

Comments: On 30 August, Transport Canada issued a recall for all 2013 Can-Am Spyder RT and ST Roadsters. The recall had to do with excessive heat melting the plastic top of the brake master cylinder, resulting in a danger of fire when the fluid spills onto the hot engine and exhaust manifolds. BRP says that NTHSA is reviewing their proposed resolution for the USA. When will NTHSA issue the recall in the USA? Sooner is better than later, as the Spyders that have already burned turned into roaring infernos, rapidly, since the location of the fire is in an area not easily accessible for use of a fire extinguisher, due to the body of the Can-Am Spyder design. People are at risk and a solution must be forthcoming quickly.

And this is what we were told from the beginning. It's on NHTSA to get off their butts and approve or disapprove the fix.

I wonder why can't BRP do the right thing and do a voluntary recall for all 2013 Spyder RT's and ST's like they did with the RT ball joint issue? Why do they have to wait for the NHTSA? If there is a fix for this issue then let's get it done. Could our friendly BRP spoke's person let us know why? I've got over 8000 miles on my 2013 RT-Ltd. I need to check the master cylinder to see if I have the issue.

Right now, in Iowa, we've got perfect weather to ride. I'd hate to have to shut things down while BRP and the NHTSA drag their feet.

Tony

The whole thing is really 3 things, Cat position change, gas tank boiling ( causing EVAP canister fuel smell?) and the MC. I think if the cylinder shows damage it should be replaced too I do not like the idea of using a half melted cylinder. They need to do something to help heat venting to fix all 3.

Just Curious

Would it be the recommendation of the "experts" on this board to "shut down", until we hear something from the Government, he'll I may not live that go! So many of you are so knowledgable about these things. I don't know that I have experienced a lot of heat issues, and it seems that the only way to tell if you have a problem is to pull the Tupperware off the machine, and I am all :thumbup:s when it comes to that. Not too sure what to do?

Pull some tupperware and see if you have the problem, And if not keep on riding but also keep an eye on it till the /if a recall notice is sent to you..... Not everyone's Spyder is melting....

Relocate the cat converter and forced ventilation??...

:agree: The cat converter has a large radiant surface area. Could it be relocated to the muffler outside the body? Would the necessary temps be reached in the muffler? As it is, it's like setting the gas tank on top of a burner on your stove. FB inquired about vent holes in the tupperware? Where would these holes be located to be most effective? Several are trying forced air fan solutions. I don't know the latest on that. Anybody? As Akspyderman and others have stated, after paying $25000+ dollars for these things, the customer should not have to engineer bandaid solutions. Will we see a solution with the 2014's along with the recall? (i hope this isn't considered a highjack. I'm staying on thread and asking serious questions)

Wow.

Wow. Calm down people and put down the pitchforks. The letter will come. Then call the dealer and make arrangements to get it fixed.

I will likely wait until winter so it does not interfere with my riding time.

As per the parts catalog view, the CAT is in the same location on all 2010 to 2013 RT's and 2013 ST's and RS's.

Not until I can ride mine with confidence. I did not pay $25k for a fireball. What ever they did they obviously are hotter and burning or melting. This is BRP's fault and they sold it to me. They either need to make me feel safe or buy it back from as far as I am concerned.
