New vs Used

Hello Everyone, I am brand new to the Spyder Lovers page and am looking for advice.

I am considering the purchase of a Spyder after more than twenty years on two wheelers.

I am looking at three different models at one of the local dealers.

1) 2015 RT Special Edition (demo bike) with about 4000 miles. No warranty

2) 2014 RT with about 30,000 miles. No warranty. It appears to be in good condition but will need tires soon. One concern I have is the cost of the higher milage services.

3) 2014 ST new, never titled. I would have to get a backrest for the wife and possibly a trunk. The salesman told me that while this is a brand new bike it is a discontinued model and that might affect resale, parts availability down the road etc. The real plus would be getting an extended warranty. This model also has the smaller engine, etc.

The cost difference is not a real factor but is in the mix.

While I do most of my riding solo the comfort and confidence on the Spyder of my wife is important when she does ride with me.

Thank you all in advance for your help.

Since your Wife's comfort is a significant consideration: stay with an RT model...
I've got a 2014 RT Limited... but pop for the 2015 model with far fewer miles on it. nojoke
Happy Shopping!

Mike,

I agree with Bob, stick with an RT for the wife's comfort.

One more thought, keep looking for one with lower mileage and a warranty. I see that you're in Florida, home of the inflated price trikes. From what I've seen, 3 wheeled conveyances cost more there than anywhere else in the country. Maybe look for one further north and either have it shipped or take a road trip.

Good luck, and welcome!

Jim

I highly recommended no matter what comes up on the used market stay with a 3 cyclinder semi automatic. I also think with your wants an RT is the way to go. Even when driving alone you will enjoy it.

There are many sales on for a 16 since the 17's have come out. I've seen new RT's priced almost at used 15 costs. Keep shopping and get an RT with a warranty, you're wife will be forever happy. Look for a volume dealer they bargain the lowest, but look around for a good service department....they aren't necessarily one and the same. Good luck and welcome to the :spyder2: family.

No warranty?

Perhaps in all of my travels and experience there are some situations that I have yet to encounter, I believe that all Spyders have a two year warranty from the in service date, demo or sale.

Then a person can buy additional B.E.S.T. Warranty, if the Byke still is under warranty and not more than 5 years out of in service date. If I am right these bykes still have warranty and more is available. Any dealer or even you can contact BRP offer them the serial number and find out what is applicable and what is available. You can purchase tge warranty from other dealers in other states with just a phone call, shop for the price and get the B.E.S.T warranty, you won't be dissappointed.

in addition to this you can also pick up third party warranties at a reasonable cost such as from Zurich.

:agree:
The 2015 RT demo will come with a 2-year factory warranty, unless it's been previously sold to someone else. But if that's the case, it should still be under warranty, which means that you can extend it for up to an additional three years with a BEST warranty.

The extended warranty with BRP follows the bike, not the owner. The rule is that if you extend the warranty while the factory warranty is still in effect, you can cover it for a total of five years beginning from when it was first titled.

If dealer doesn't understand this (some don't), have him call BRP and check it out. Many dealers will throw in a few years of extended warranty on the left over or a demo as a sales incentive. But if they don't, as Buckeye Bleau said above, you can save a lot of money on the BEST extended warranty if you shop it. This has been widely discussed here on the forum.

Oh, and :welcome:

My personal pick would be the 2015 RT Special. If you don't like the short windshield, you can get an aftermarket windshield that is better than the OEM RT shield. But also test ride the ST - it's a really fun Spyder to ride.

Man, that IS a nice RT. And I love the looks of that seat! And the price seems about right for the low mileage and the accessories.

I like it too good price could easily extend the BEST, and it is black current, they are faster than the rest, with the high gloss black and subtle red min-metal flake. Perfect with a lot of mods, you are good for the Ryde!.:riding::yes::firstplace:

IMHO I would go with the 2015 RT if the price is under $20,000. With only 4000 miles you should be able to buy a BEST extended warranty. I do like the black RT that is listed in one of the above posts! That is a great deal!

:welcome: I would do some more checking about the warranty. A 2015 should have at least the manufacturers 2 year which begins when the :spyder2: is sold to the customer. If you are going to do two-up riding, the RT is the best platform for comfort.

Test driving and more questions here are recommended.

Steve is a very stand up guy. He is the leader of Spyder Ryders of east Texas in which Im a member. I wouldnt hesitate to do business with him. He said that He can also get financing for it if need be.

I agree with going for the RT if there's a passenger. But I'm suspicious that the dealer doesn't have the 2015 under warranty. If I was in the market I'd sure consider the one AY4B describes.

:D Rob,
Are you getting "1330-curious"?
:roflblack:
I've ridden enough of them to get over my "1330-curiosity" including spending a day with a dealer loaner while mine was in the shop. I have nothing against the 1330 engine, but I also like the 998 a lot, for the reasons I've often stated. Most of all, I just REALLY like the Spyder I have, and don't feel the least bit inclined to trade it in for a newer one - especially since I've spent so much time and money making it "the perfect RT" ;)

There's always the "Deal you can't refuse". But I don't think there's any dealer out there willing to put that deal together for me. They'd have to take too much of a loss.

Choices choices....

Welcome spyderlover  I would double check that no warranty business. They come with two with the option to extend...seems they want you sell you the ST cause they no longer want it in their inventory...
