NEW TIRE VS OLD TIRE

Purchased new BRP "improved" :2thumbs: (manufactured 2015) tire today. Changed out old (original) tire at 13,175 miles. Still had enough tread on it to go another 2-300 miles. Decided to stick with motorcycle tire vs auto tire. Read all of the "pros" and "cons" on this site about the different tires. :dontknow: Tough decision. But, I can live with $275.00 for a tire every 13,000+ miles. Photos attached.

Thanks for sharing the pics. I have made the same decision as you did and having a new formula Kenda OEM tire installed in a few weeks.

Getting that mileage from the original tire, $275 is very reasonable. If I can get that mileage and a change out at that price, I would be happy.

I just dropped my '14 RT-S off this afternoon to get the original stock Kenda replaced. I got just over 6500 miles out of it. Replacing it with a General Altimax RT43. Only cost me $89 shipped to my door, and from what I hear about this tire, I can expect 20,000+ miles out of it.

No contest, except that the dealers are anal about installing non-OEM tires. Have to use an independent shop.

I think it's obscene that the oil change lasts longer than the tire. I hope the "improved" Kendas work out better.

Great..!!

I'm not alone..:yes:you will get better mileage from the new tire. Although I have an RS and get better mileage my first Kenda (2012) got 22,000 miles. The second one is at 11,000 miles and doing well. The fronts, first set got 29,000 miles and were replaced 2,000 miles ago. Glad you got good miles on your and I also will not go to the car tires. I'd go into the reasons but the last few times I mentioned them I was kicked around like a tin can in a toddler park...:roflblack::roflblack:

If you're happy with the mileage on your Kenda (and you should be!), it makes no sense to change to anything else! :D

I got 4K miles my rear Kenda!

Just had my 3K check done - rear tire MAY last till 4K, but I feel it would not pass State Inspection now as wear bars show flush with the rest of the tire - in the center area of the tire.

As with other Spyders I've owned, I'll get an "Auto" tire.

Just me..

Your old Kenda looked better than my OEM Kenda did at just over 7,000 miles, when I replaced it. I have just over 11,000 miles on my Kumho Ecsta AST and and my most recent oil change, my dealer suggested that it would probably need to be replaced at my next 4,600 mile service.

I'll be interested to see reports from folks who are using the post June 2014 Kenda as to the mileage they get from that compound.

Just had my 3000 mile check up done and my rear tire looks just like new. Not going to worry about new tires yet. You need to make sure you keep the air pressure correct to avoid any problems with wear spots. Juust my opinion.

I opted to remove the OEM Kenda at 900 miles on my 2014 RT ... I didn't want a 2 ply substandard tire on my bike when I am going down the highway at 70MPH... 2ply tires are ok on wheelbarrows & lawnmowers..

Dunno what you all are complaining about - you are talking 3k & 4k MILES out of your tires aren't you?? I was pretty damn careful with the tyres on my 2013 RT, and only thru the greatest of care & stretching things to the utmost did I manage to get 5,000 KILOMETERS out of the rear Kenda - but I just had to pull it off once the canvas started showing!!:yikes: I replaced that with a Kumho KH17 225/65/15 (it's a bigger & heavier construction tire, so I run it at lower pressures [24-26psi] to maximise traction & avoid any hydro-planing issues - never had any btw! ;)) & it's only just worn all the little casting tags off after almost 10,000 km!

The front Kenda's were pretty much useless in the wet after about 7,000 km, & throw-aways even for dry weather riding soon after, so they've gone too! When I took them off, we found that they weren't even round; the ride & handling wasn't bad, there were no vibrations or pulling in either direction, & the bike had been laser aligned; but the tires were just rubbish from the word go!! When we took them off we found that while the tread looked to be very evenly worn, some sections of the centre tread grooves were only 1mm deep while a bit further around the circumferential grooves there was almost 4mm of tread depth!! We ran them up on a balance machine & it became obvious that the tread never had an even depth - I reckon the casing was crap from the tire manufacturer so the tread had been 'shaved' & balanced on the bike to make them properly round & present an even cirumference at the expense of even tread depth - there were 4-5 shallow spots in the tread on each tire!! I now run Kumho KH17's up front too, 175/60R15's - & even after almost 6,000km on them with no visible wear the ride & handling is still soooo much better that it's not funny, plus the bike finally tracks like a rocket sled on rails!! :ohyea:

So my advice about Spyder Tires? Just toss the Kendas & get some real tires instead of the factory rubbish as soon as you pick up your new bike!!

yudydude, BRP had a really crappy rear tire compound on the OEM Kendas in 2013 and until June, 2014 - maintaining the BRP recommended tire pressure did nothing to keep them from wearing, way too fast. As a result, many of us are reluctant to go back to Kenda unless it is proven to no longer be a piece of :cus:. nojoke

Missus and I are going to Mason to stay at a B&B this weekend and I just didn't have time to find car tire, remove my rear wheel and belt sprocket, take the rear wheel into San Antonio and get it mounted and balanced and then re-install. I haven't done it before and I can't afford to blow a day of work as I am a bit backed up at my business. I should have been a bit more on top of the rear tire and changed it before now. It was a $264 oversight. Kent Powersports did the new Kenda and they were far less expensive than Coyote Powersports (quoted $500). Kenda tires are junk as far as two wheelers go and I am sure I will get the chance to do this right in the near future! This was at 4465 miles to be specific:

My Kenda history. 125,000 plus miles total on 5 :spyder2:

Prior to purchasing my 2014, I consistently got 13K to 15K on rear tires. The 2014 OEM tire crapped out at 8,900 miles. My second Kenda is at 10,600 miles. It is starting to show wear in the center, but I think its good for another 3K or so. Going to replace at the beginning of next riding season with another Kenda.

2014 is in the shop today for oil change service. They said they will not install non OEM tires per BRP--so I am stuck there. It does appear that the re-do on tires has got us back to what I would consider "normal."

I am lowering my rear tire pressure from 28 down to 26 just to see if less ballooning will make for less wear in the center. I will let you know after another tire test.

:gaah:....AK, it pains me to hear about you taking the " shaft " so to speak on this OEM tire BS from the Stealer ........I don't know if you are aware ...but any car/trk shop with a normal Hydraulic tire changer can take your tire off and put any other tire on your REAR RIM ...if you bring it in with the HUB and SPROKET off.....There are some good car tires out there that could give you 30,000 miles or more..............There a few video's on how it's done...............Mike

I cannot do the mechanical part of removing the tire from the :spyder2: They got me where they want me on this one.
