NEW Spyder RT Special Pulls to the right

Howdy FellowSpyder Lovers. We just purchased a new 2015 Spyder RT Special. At the age of 65it seemed the way to go. My wife would not ride on the back of my Harley butshe loves this thing (Yikes what have I done!!) After only 300 miles I lovethis thing but have some concerns!!

One; Itpulls hard to the right, this happens on all types of road surfaces. I cannotsit back on cruise control and relax as I must keep a firm grip on the leftside of the handle bars or in a second I will be off the road. I talked to mysales rep and he felt it was the road but I had no experience so I thought Iwill ride it then see what happens and yep it pulls hard to the right.

Two; I findthe steering to be stiff; this may be related to the pull.

They talk aboutextended ride time with the ease of ridding but so far my Harley was mucheasier to control. I know there is a learning curve and I have learned a lot ina few hours but the pull and stiff steering will be a big issue on long runs.Not to mention dangerous.

I am lookingforward to other more experienced rider’s inputs.

Other thenthat I love this thing. We are coming to the end of our ridding season here inthe sunny Okanogan Valley of BC so my 600 mile check up will be in May and thenwatch out highways as here we come!!

check tire pressure, I find 20# in the front, 28# in the rear tire.
fronts should be +-.5# of each other.

Does it "pull" or just "drift" to the right? First, make sure that both front tires are at 20 lbs psi. If that doesn't cure it, you probably need to have it aligned. I'm not sure who does laser alignment up there in B.C. but you might want to find someone and have it checked out.

1. Check pressure.
2. If still pulling, have dealer re-check balance.
3. If still pulling get it Laser Aligned (Probably #3 but best to check 1 & 2)
4. Stiff steering, get BajaRon Sway Bar and Aluminum links (will greatly reduce arm fatigue and make a night & day difference in maneuverability)

Agree..!!

start with the tire pressure. Quick test for the DPS (dynamic power steering) twist the bars with the engine and ignition off then twist the bars again with the engine running and see if it is easier. Alignment is also a good idea. :thumbup:

I'm an ex-Harley rider also, and have a two week old RTL that as much as I like it, had to stay on top of it going down the road. It seemed very twitchy to me, and was effected by bumps and grooves in the road. I took it last Friday to Spyder Comfort (spydercomfort.com) and had it laser aligned and all the effort to control it disappeared. You might look at their website and see if they have a dealer close to you. I'd check your tire pressure as suggested, but I know what made mine perfect.

Probably not your issue. But if all else fails, jack up the front and see if both front wheels spin freely. If you've got a dragging brake pad that will do it.

I'm sure it's an easy fix, whatever the issue is (hopefully not the DPS).

I agree with the recommendations AJ and Ron have given you. My first guess is poor alignment. I assume you have a good tire gauge from your Harley ride; if so move it to the Spyder and use it as your standard. IMO, if the Kenda tires are going to bleed off air and a pressure check is mandatory at least weekly. I don't trust any gauges but my own. Properly aligned and with front tires of equal pressure your Spyder should track dead straight with no hands on the bars unless there is a severe crown in the road. With just 300 miles on it I'd dump it in the dealer's lap and tell them you'll enjoy the loaner until they get yours spot on.

Congrats on your new Spyder but you're first service is at 3000 miles for the 1330 engine not 600

Cograts on your new ride.Lots of good advice here.One thing i found after many years on 2 wheels this thing has a major learning curve.It took me 2000 km to really start to like it.Now at 11000 km this summer i love it.And yes the first insp is at 5000 km.When i bought mine they said first insp at 1000 km then i found out on here the dealer is use to the v twin service

I had the same problem. It was a bad pair of tires. My dealer changed them out at 400 miles under warranty. You will want to have the alignment checked also. Definitely take it back to the dealer and have them take care of it. That is what your warranty is for.

Thanks for all the help. My front tires where at 10lbs and my rear at 24. I guess the dealer pre check I paid for is in question. I put the front at 20 and the read at 30(I have a lard ass & my little wife rides with me so at over 400 lbs I thought that would be a good starting point. Low and behold most of the pulling is gone and the stiff steering is almost eliminated. I will take it back to the dealer and go over some of the pre delivery stuff I paid for. I will also make sure on the first service as they told me six hundred, I just sent off a request as to what is done on the first inspection/service and asked for a price. Once I have that fixed then I will go over the other problems such as did they do any pre delivery inspection!! I really enjoyed my ride and what a difference. Tomorrow we are doing a 150 mile rounder as the weather is getting to 73. Hard to take it to the dealer when all I want to do is ride. Almost makes me feel young until the back and neck kick in, LOL!!

Sounds like you have a dealer issue, not a Spyder issue. Stay on them. They are not doing their job.
