New Spyder owner having buyers remorse

Mike, just an FYI, its sad but many states Lemon Laws don't cover MotorCycles

I would keep this info to yourself,.....find out exactly what the " lemon " law says in your State....you could be covered for a whole new Spyder wether they like it or not......But don't ask them what the law is and do not threaten anyone....or it's all over except for the lawyers and you don't want to go there.......IMHO Mike

[h=3]Motorcycle Lemon Law in Iowa[/h]Iowa Lemon Law does not cover motorcycles. However, the federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act states that the manufacturer of any product — from your toaster to your lemon motorcycle — must abide by the warranty

First the rotax engine is a proven, rock solid engine and been used in racing bikes and production bikes for years. Most of the issues that get reported here are to do with electronics and normally due to poor set up at the dealer.

There may seem to be lots of issues here but that's the nature of forums you mainly see the bad stuff, there are many thousands of trouble free happy spyders owners out there.

This is he first I've seen or heard of, with the engine so please don't let that put you off. Although if I was in your shoes I would be some what worried too. BRP will do the right thing just give them a few days to go through their process.

Try and stay calm at all times be factual, document every thing, ask for statements in writing from both the dealer and BRP. Never mention legal, courts, lawers it will get you no where and you could lose all support/help you may get. In a polite way take the stance that the two acceptable options are, totally new bike, that's what you want, but if you had too you would take a NEW engine, that's the lowest you would go. Rebuilding the current engine should not even be an option.

The hardiest part here is keeping your emotions out of it, very easy for me to say I'm not in your situation. Stay polite, professional and calm, make sure after each conversation that you full understand where your at now, what the next action item is, time frame and importantly who's is saying what. Is the dealer or BRP making the statement.

:agree: Don't mention this to anyone but find out the states lemon laws and TIME frame. I had a ford that was a lemon, the dealer strung me a long until I ran out of time, 60 days to file lemon law case.

Good luck, keep us all posted, I know it going too, but try not to let this spoil what can be a great machine and lots of fun.

This sure does stink, and I feel for you guys! :yikes: Rotax does build solid and reliable engines; this was an exception; but it doesn't make you feel any better... :gaah:
No brainer here: they'll have to do something about this; I'd lobby for a new bike since this one has so very few miles on it...
Good Luck, and please keep us in the information loop!

At first read, it sounds like you got a bad machine. It would be good if we could hear more details of exactly what may have happend. Did the 12 year old drive the bike or just have a ride on it while the adult was driving it? You know the Spyder is a highly technical machine--did something bad happen when the 12 year old was aboard?

If you got a bad machine out of the box--I would say a new machine is in order at the 86 mile mark--I cannot see how they could refuse such a request.

I don't recall this happening to anyone at that mileage.

As much information as you can supply would be helpful.

My 12 year old was just along for the ride. The only person to ever drive this unit was me. Machine was brand new. Had 1 mile of me test riding it at the dealership when I left.

I am glad that you clarified that the 12 year old was a passenger, that is important, I am also concerned that this Spyder had no miles on it other than the ones you put on it from the dealer, my dealer test drove my Spyder for about 12 - 15 miles before i took delivery of it and he test drives it each time i take it in for service before he gives it back to me ( i jokingly accused him of just wanting to ride with my gas). Any others out there get their Spyder with zero miles on it/

I am sorry to read of this problem. I started a rant about BR1 being in the shop for parts 45 days and now it seems insignificant to my "fixed" problem. I have some experience in this area (not with BRP/Spyder) but will hold my tongue as I was beaten severely about the head and shoulders when I ranted about my Spyder's reliability.

Good luck and keep us informed about your progress.

Based on information provided

It's a one in a million problem that deserves a one in a million solution. BRP should replace the machine, or at minimum, BRP and your dealer should work something out that allows that to happen.

I totally agree. Hope BRP does not loose the chance to present itself as a responsible, customer-satisfaction oriented company!!!

The Rotax engines have a fabulous reputation in the Aprilias. BRP has got to
get their act together. I've quickly learned from this forum that if you can't
wrench it yourself then to buy something else.

sorry to hear about your issues

don't give up on BRP yet they are a fun machine

but you might shoot a customer service email through official web site with your issues they do help and seem to make things happen

i am currently spyderless myself for the last 4 weeks mine is in the shop for a back ordered part and a crappy dealer

Dang I hate to hear this

I have 40k+ on my 2010 RTSE5....had a few issues but nothing that either dealership or BRP wasn't willing to immediately correct. Minor problems when weighed against yours for sure....consider calling BRP yourself and talking to head tech...Used to be Carlo but maybe that has changed. Unfortunately not all dealers are willing to scream and yell for the customer...look for the dealer/tech that will go alllllll the way for you. Do not be against changing dealerships with you don't get what you want!!! This is the best forum to be on to get the help you need. For example yesterday I rode to my servicing dealer (4 hrs 1 way) to get new rear tire...was having an issue (again!!) with rear saddle bag not opening...now this has been worked reworked and worked again under warranaty....my tech spent over an hour fixing...never charged me a dime and said "crap if I can't solve something this simple I better hang up my retired Spyder Tech sign....plus the dealership supports that kind of customer service. Unfortunately the dealership owners are retiring and "going away" tech has offered position but don't know the attitude of that dealership...But can't imagine Bruce working somewhere he can't treat the customer right. I say all that to say there are bad, good and great techs and dealers to be had. How far is Cowtown (Cuba, MO) from you they are off the charts awesome? OK getting ready for big benefit ryde tomorrow...cleaning up bedrooms several bikers staying nite...should be a fun time. My older sis is here and she is soooooo not a biker babe should be good for some eye rolling times :yikes::clap:....

I was very close to buying a 2012 spyder, but after reading this, their is no way now, I guess i'll return to the lcl. Harley dealer [a name brand motorcycle] not a new pop-up no name in motorcycles, WOW!....how sick, Good luck to you my friend :dontknow:.

It's not just this story alone, but put all the problems that people have had with a new spyder here also, and how they are treated by the co.:barf:

Wow, with all due respect (I don't know you or your intentions) that's really off the mark, haha! I guess the fact that you don't own one says something,...

These bikes are state of the art, functioning in a world of relative low technology. BRP is far from a no-name as you imply above. The Rotax engine is a proven design, but not without its faults. I challenge you find me any engine that has never thrown a rod, or blown a gasket.

I guarantee there is more to this story than we know about at this time, and I look forward to hearing The rest, of the story,...

Harley dealer....why would you buy a harley ? If your not looking to buy a Spyder and want 2 wheels instead, the only other bike you should look at is a Goldwing...these bikes are bulletproof, believe me I own one. I just got back from a 10,000 mile ride down route 66. I was gone 30 days on my 2001 wing, completely trouble free....now my friend on his 2010 Harley had problems.
All bikes, of any type have their problems.

Oh and Bombardier also makes plane engines incase you thought they weren't a brand name...lol

Thanks

I don,t know how many HD's you've been on but they're not the last word in motorcycles. My wife's spyder is far superior to the HD I am riding now. My friend's Ultra died without a whimper at about 5000 miles. If you let 1 vehicle and dealer influence you you're making a mistake.:lecturef_smilie:

Rotax engines

Speaking of plane engines, I went to an airshow a few weeks ago and saw this guy (Dan Buchanan www.danbuchananairshows.com) who has a Rotax engine on his kite. He's also in a wheelchair when on the ground, so he LOVES to be in the air. All the fireworks were impressive considering his kite wing is flammable :yikes:

new spyder owner

New Spyder Owner -buyer's remorse
Hello all. I have ridden motorcycles for some time and decided to get something
that my wife and I could both ride. We did a lot of research on the Spyders and last Friday bought a 2012 RT-S SE5. It's a beautiful machine and we were so excited. It's a blue one so we named it Pappa Smurf.

First couple of rides my wife was just in love. Very comfortable, fun to ride. On Sunday my 12 year-old son rode it and my 9 year old daughter was about to. This is where my buyer's remorse starts. At the 86 mile mark (total miles, this is new) it completely shut down while accelerating. Was in 4th gear, maybe about 50 mph. Shut down suddenly and completely. Orange CHECK ENGINE screen. Sounded awful and LCD screen became this washed out white, hard to read display. 86 TOTAL MILES! Had to quickly pull over, thank God it wasn't heavy traffic or we could have had an accident!

Called tow truck, took back and us back home. Dealership spent a few days trying to figure it out. Said they haven't seen this before.
Here is where we stand today. Head tech says that the cam chain broke and metal all over inside the engine and now there are likely all kinds of issues. They asked Can Am for a new motor, which they didn't say no to but they also didn't say yes too. It strikes me as incredibly bad that Can Am didn't just offer up a replacement motor or bike. If I bough.t a new car and put 86 miles on it and then it did something like this, I think it likely that they would just find another unit and say here you go. So strike one for customer friendly.

Tomorrow I may find out if they say yes to a new motor. If they say no, gotta rebuild it, my tech already has expressed concern that they will find all the metal pieces. Plus they will have more tied up in labor and part than a new motor would cost. Not to mention that I will be without the bike WAY longer. That would be strike two and three. Who treats customers like this? I hope not Can Am. If I sound frustrated I am. I just want to ride the bike. I had to back out of a ride this weekend and if this doesn't go well I suspect I will miss out on a few more..... Now I'm wondering just what I have gotten myself into.

Sorry, It was terrible. I hope you'll be up and riding soon and enjoy this awesome machine like my wife and me .
When I have my 2012 RT SE5 I didn't let my adult son ride her who have DMV permit until he read the owners manual and watched the safety video. I'm sure BRP will do the best to resolve the situation.:(
