There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. Need Input - Lost Gas Cap

Hey All -

I went to fill up today after work and as usual some folks came over and started asking me questions about 14 - yes, it's still happening! :D

Anyway, I got through fueling, talking etc. and hit the road home after buttoning everything up. At least I THOUGHT I had everything buttoned up. I forgot to put the :cus: fuel cap back on! I rode 50 miles home with no fuel cap. Didn't seem to hurt anything, but of course, NO FUEL CAP! Considering this thing's perpensity to catch fire I got nervous.

I took the cap off of the RS-S and went to my local Auto Zone. There I found a generic fuel cap that fit perfectly. So - what do you guys think? Will this generic cap be OK? I noticed that the cap on 14 does not appear to be vented; the generic cap seems to be. Your input is desired! As always, thanks guys!

Who among us hasn't suffered this fate at least once?? Just to be on the safe side, I'd order a new cap from the dealer, but your replacement is probably fine...

(I always throw my cap under the lifted seat on all of the plastic that's there so that I have to put it back in place in order to climb back aboard...)

UPDATE!

This just in... (queue type-writer noises!) ... I went back to the scene of the crime this morning just for the heck of it AND GOT MY CAP BACK!!

The guy who runs the place apparently sees me there (it's place I fuel up alot) and he saved it for me. Pretty cool, huh! So the generic cap is now an emergency spare. Mr. Denman, that is a good idea and is something I will do as well moving forward. Thanks! :2thumbs:

:agree:

I always put mine under the seat too--- so there's no way I put the seat down and forget it.

Seems :dontknow: Like you have had a bad day or two:roflblack: Better drink some Warm Milk and hit the hay early and things will be better in the morning!:roflblack:

For those of you who are RT drivers, your seat will close with the cap under it and then you can go down the road and make a hard right and get gas all over your left leg. Don't ask me how I know, but I have the whole MO Gang to swear to it.:opps:

Glad to hear the gas station attendant was attentive enough to grab it and save it for you. That is one of the benefits of being a frequent customer sometimes. I also leave ours under the seat on our Spyders to make sure I don't forget to put it back on. The conversations will all the onlookers can casue confusion quite often. :D

Yessir, it's been a rough go as of late; most of you know why. But I'm trying to get back in the game. I reckon I went on a real rant last night. Feel kinda silly about it now but you guys got me in line! Thanks for that.

Wolfen, what's up brother! SO it seems the concensus is in. Cap under seat from now on. I just wonder how the generic cap would have done or what it would have done. I am not sure if there is a pressure constant that they want maintained in the tank or what. It sure didn't affect performance, I'll tell ya that. 14 is making great power with the cold weather in. Slammin baby! :ohyea:

I am not sure about the use of the vented cap either, but then you have the vent tube for the evaporation cannister so there is a chance everything would have balanced out.

My Spyder is also running great in the colder weather, and I think I may be getting better mileage now as well. I haven't tested it yet, but have been thinking about it. :D

GREAT news! (And you were worried!) That guy goes to the front of your Christmas card list!

The only problem with a vented cap is that it will leak if you flip the Spyder upside-down. As hard as you ride, that is not so far fetched as it may sound. :roflblack: Most gas tanks these days are separately vented so that a float valve (roll-over valve) can be fitted to prevent fuel spilling in case of an accident. The same roll-over valve cuts off the evap canister in case of an upset. IMO, it is no problem fitting a vented cap for the short run, but you would probably not want one there permanently. For one thing, they tend to spray fuel out when the tank is full on a vibrating motorcycle.

I kind of figured as much. And I know, I am kind of an animal on 14 there! I don't know what it is; When I'm on my Wife's RS-S I am very calm. Well, two reasons for that; one, it's a sweet ride and it just feels good to putt on that one. Two, my Wife would KILL me! :roflblack: But when I get on 14, something strange and wonderful happens. My whole temperament changes and I just start looking for stuff to carve up. I can't keep her under 80 unless I downshift into 4th gear! But I never get jerky on the freeway or anything. Gotta be respectful of others, so I make my moves carefully on the freeway and head for the twisties for the real fun!

Scotty, thanks. I knew if anyone would have the answer you would. No disrespect to others, of course. There are alot of pretty smart people on this site and I learn something new almost every day just reading.

It's a good thing that it wasn't number 13; right? We'd all hate to be thinking about what was going on...

(Tipping mine over just ain't ever happening... too much "wuss" under the helmet!)

You were lucky on two accounts...

1. No problems without the cap
2. You got the cap back

From how I see it, you did okay! Phew!:ohyea:
Wow!! All this Just reminded me to take my---

One Day 50+ Multiply vitamin with Extra memory Support so I don,t-

1- Leave off my gas cap?:yikes::roflblack:
2- Lock my key in the trunk?:yikes::roflblack:
