Need help..sputtering

I have a 2008 with less than 3000 miles. I had been running on 93 octane and recently ran a tank of 89 and now 87..I know, why screw with things but I wanted to see if there was an increase MPG with the 87.
Today, while in first or second gear in traffic, there was a noticeable sputtering. I pulled both plugs and they seemed fine. Unfortunately none of my local auto parts stores have the same plugs. I then went for a ride 45-70 mph and still noticed the sputter.
My question is could it be the switch from 93 to 87 octane be the cause?
Thanks in advance.

I do not think so , being a 2008 I would check the vaccum hoses on left side of bike , 3 inch hoses , I use 87 and no missing

rpm's

what are your rpm's when the sputtering happens? since you pulled your plugs, your plug wires are probably now junk, if they are the original stock wires. they are well known for that. check your ''y '' pipe gaskets too, or it could just be a loose y pipe clamp. at 3000 miles the gaskets should be still good. have you checked for any codes?

RPM's..around 4k
it hasnt changes since the plugs pulled..i was super careful when doing it. But super pissed i was unable to find plugs at THREE different auto parts stores(replacement for the exact ones in there)
I recently was hit from behind. The shop that did the work is an authorized sales and service. I may just take it there if i cant solve it.
And I have not checked for codes..

One thing i did notice was it got worse the warmer the engine got.

The Spyder will lean out the warmer it gets. The spark plugs that come in the Spyder are an OEM item. Look for NGK DCPR8EIX. They should have or can easily get these. But be sure to use Thermal Paste on the threads. NOT Anti-Seize!

Cool..will do!

:lecturef_smilie:.....You said you pulled the plugs ???? you said you were careful !!!!..............The OEM plug wires are crap get some 300 + ACCEL FERRO SPIRAL CORE 8.0 mm silicone wires ( universal type) @ SUMMITRACING .COM........or from BAJARON here at Spyderlovers...............JMHO

Don't know what the sputtering is all about, but I've tried filling up with 93, 89, and 87 octane fuels and the only appreciable difference was that my 2012 RS would backfire when downshifting with 87, but not with 89 or 93. Fuel mpg was about the same (as close as I could determine) across all 3 fuels, so I settled on running 89 octane (just to prevent that backfiring on downshift). I'm at a little over 7K miles on mine now and it's running very well.

Good luck with the sputtering issue! You might add a little SeaFoam to the fuel tank when you fill it up next and see if that helps clear things up.

Thanks Michael...
Update....decided that the sputtering was enough of a concern to have the professionals take a look at it. I figure it was the best bet. Spoke to the lead mechanic on Saturday who was attempting to replicate the issue with negative results. He will try again Tuesday. His resoning is instead of dumping parts into it,why not see what is wrong first. He rode it for approximately 40-45 minutes and it was performing as it should. Quite possibly could be as simple as something in the fuel system getting cleared up when it was taken to the shop.
I have the utmost confidence in the shop, Stanford Motorsports, and am sure it will be resolved.
Will post outcome.

Well the mechanic could not replicate the issue. Went over and rode it home,45 minutes with zero issues. Filled er up and then let it sit for an hour or so. Fired it up and took another 45 minute ride..nothing. Just happy it's working at 100%.

Good deal! Could have been nothing more than a bad load of gas. Could also have been the ECU adjusting to the lower octane. But that seems less likely. All's well that ends well! :ohyea:

My 2009 RS will sputter on acceleration and also back-fire letting of the gas on 87 octane. This is much more noticeable when I have the Hindle exhaust on it. When I have the stock exhaust I don't notice it nearly as much on 87 octane. The main reason I know this is because when my girl friend rides with me on longer trips I put the stock exhaust back on for a much quieter ride. For shorter rides around home I like a little more noise.

Thanks Michael...

If you mean Stamford Motorsports in Stamford, CT, you are going to the right place. Jeremy, the Spyder technician there, really knows these machines. Believe me, you are in good hands.

hindles and the lean condition

hindles are well known to cause alot of bikes to run on the lean side. they're probably a little TOO free flowing. it's all here if you want to search for it.

All good..ran a tank of 87 with no issues. Seems fine.
Other than the one guy who passed me in the opposite direction on his Harley and flipped me the bird. Tiny little bit of a guy at that. Wonder why? I think perhaps its because of the whole three wheel, sport bike looking, thing. But I am pretty darn sure, if he had the stones to stop and do it, rather than at 50MPH going in the opposite direction, thing may have gone a tad differently. I did however have a real nice chat with a group of Harley/Sport bike guys. They walked over after I had stopped for a break and some water. Asked all sorts of questions, and were really impressed with the GS and also with the fact that after suffering a brain injury I decided to continue living life. Now I wonder if that other rider, ya know "bird" man, had actually stopped and asked why in the world would a person want to ride a Spyder, he may just have learned something. But then again, the world is full of idiots and organ donors.

I'll be keeping that in mind!

:clap:Well Said, sir! I just came over to a Spyder fro a Harley-Davidson Ultra Classic, and there are definitely some Harley snobs out there. I owned three, and they're good bikes, but I got tried of wrestling 800 plus pounds on two wheels. As far as bang for the buck, the Spyder offers a lot more then H-D who has been scrambling to catch up to modern technology that people today demand, by hiding behind the "tradition" mantra. They are now figuring out that people want both.
