So I kept seeing all of these reports about the antenna falling off down the road. That, combined with the fact that I bought a half cover to keep the RTS covered whenever I park it in a parking lot (and it's more difficult to get the cover over the stock antenna), I decided to get a stubby. So which stubby to get? I saw reports of the Wal-Mart Stubby, but I also saw reports of people saying it doesn't have very good reception. Now the fact is, I'll probably never use the radio, because I stream audio (MP3, iHeartRadio, etc...) from my phone, but the few times I used the radio in my Prius (which came with a stubby), it worked great. However, I changed out the antenna on my Prius for a 3" Carbon Fiber antenna, which has less than perfect reception....but ti looks good and I don't use the radio anyway. I kept the antenna from the Prius; why, I don't know, but I must have somehow known that I was going to put it on the RT-S.
For those of you worried that the stock antenna is going to fall off; All I can say is that if you purchase your RT-x from the dealer I got mine from (Yamaha-Funcenter in Boerne, TX), that will never happen. In fact, mine was installed with Locktite, and was so secure, the antenna threads broke off in the base. Not a big deal for me; I just threaded a new hole in the base. Below are pictures of the finished project. I like the look of it much better than the long whip, it is much easier to deal with when getting the cover on the RT-S, and reception appears to be just as strong as what I was getting before (the few times I actually used it).
