My First Spyder

Just picked up my first Spyder last night, a 2014 ST-S in Cognac. Coming from a Burgman 400, this is a big step up, but I came to take for granted a few things I had on the old bike that I am hoping to resolve over the next couple of months.

First is some form of helmet locking system. I never even thought to ask about it before I bought it, but when I got to my first stop, I was walking around scratching my head as to where to hang the helmet. It just barely fits in the trunk, so as long as I don't have anything else in there, I suppose that will suffice. But more often than not I have my messenger bag in the trunk, so I am sure it will become an issue soon enough. I have seen a few posts about the lidlox http://lidlox.com/ which looks promising. But I was wondering if anyone used them, and if so, while you are riding, what do you do with those extenders that pop into the locks?
I have also seen mention of using hand cuffs to lock helmets to the passenger death grips, but with my new-bike-paranoia I worry about scuffing the helmet or the bike with them. I suppose I could go with furry hand cuffs, but that might detract from the intimidation factor

Second was some front storage, and honestly it is only for my glasses when I swap them for my sunglasses. Also it would give me somewhere to put those helmet extenders if I get the lidlox. I don't need anything like the large leather tank bags or anything like that. Just something small that I can drop my glasses in while riding. And in reality, with the larger windscreen this may not be an issue. I can probably hang them off my shirt collar without worrying about the wind buffeting them off.

Those are really the two biggies that I deal with on a regular basis. Other than that I plan on having a lot of fun on my new toy.

I have an RTS, and keep my full face helmet in the frunk. I don't know if the ST frunk is as big, though.

I'm considering lidlox for when I'm traveling and using the frunk for other stuff. I'm sure many people here will have some ideas for you.

Security

Oh, one other thing. Security. I know I can lock the handlebars, but I worry about this getting stolen. Do you folks have a recommendation on theft prevention? I live in an apartment complex, and the Spyder is parked in a carport. I have a bike lock cable I used on my scooter, but I am having a bit of trouble finding where to attach it on the Spyder.

I put the Lidlox on my STL. Real easy 15 minute installation (including dropping the hex wrench twice!) I didn't need the extenders for my helmet but I just put them in the the toolkit in the frunk.

Ah, I wasn't quite sure how they worked. So I guess there is just a clip inside that snaps over teh D-ring when you push it through?

to the spyder world and this site..congrats on your new ryde, very nice..!! :2thumbs: I use the kryptonite retractable cable to lock our helmets to the seat through the grab bar. Security is a choice you haveto make. With a cover on bars locked kill swith on and park brake on your pretty safe. You could add a cable lock through the wheels (just remember its there) or a pager alarm system...:thumbup:

I use Velcro on the helmet extender and just stick them to the underside of the frunk lid.

Welcome AlphaJoe, to the world of spyder roadsters.:clap: I also came from a Burgman 400 and understand about the storage problem. I started out with a leather Bell handlebar bag strapped across my handlebars but found a Motocentric Cruiser Tool Bag that is a little better. I carry a bottle of water, house keys and garage door opener in it.

As for securring your helmet most of the time I just put it in the frunk but for time when I have something else in the frunk I made a helmet holder that holds the helmet just to the side of the frunk. If you open the frunk and look at the back top of the frunk you will see plastic removable cover that covers some wiring connections. I just drilled a small hole in the plastic removable cover and put a bolt and nut through it. Then I hook the strap on the bolt and close the frunk. helmet secured neat as you please and only about .50 cents for a couple nut and one bolt.

Hope this gives you some ideas.
