• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. My 2022 Ryker keys are interchangeable...

I bought my bike used, too. The service manager didn't even blink, just reached for my keys. The tech plugged into my bike and fiddled less than a minute. Hopefully it'll be that simple for all of us.

Thank you again - we shall see.

While out on another run yesterday in basically the same direction as one of the dealers I’d mentioned, I decided to make the full 25 mile jaunt to check on the key question. Initially, the question didn’t register with their service manager, but he persevered in his search through the model’s recall service history from BRP. He eventually found it, and it appears that the freebie service is good until sometime in 2027. He said that “the key” had to be programmed into the bike’s system, but he also gave me the impression that my existing keys already had that capability. **I'm concerned that he may be a little confused on that part of it.

He said they couldn’t take care of it now (they were extremely busy with new bikes going out the door) and suggested I make an appointment for some time after the holiday rush, which I will.

** If you look in BRP’s on-line parts diagram for the 2022 Ryker Sport, they only list one key type, a “Dess Key, RF Type”. Nothing mentioned about any “magnetic type”. I’d really hate for them to get part way through the programming function only to find they don’t have the correct key installed. I’m going ask him to please get a verbal verification from BRP just to make sure before we get to that point.

This was posted on FB, and in the discussion the procedure was referred to as "flashing keys". Heck if I know.

Thanks Sarah.

If the there is only one type of key, and they are the RF type, then they will have to be flashed with a code, which the machine may already possess in memory. If not, then the dealer will have to initiate the code that I assume BRP would provide to get the key and machine talking to one another. Not sure how that part of works.

If the keys you had, and I now have, are truly dumb magnetic keys, they have to be replaced with the smart types and flashed with the appropriate coding. That's basically what has to be done if you have to get new key FOBs for your car.

I had a decent view through the service door, I couldn't swear to it but I'm pretty sure I was handed back the same keys I brought in.

Sarah

It's the post, not the key, that needs to be replaced.

Does a Ryker’s “clamshell” have to be opened to R&R the DESS post?

I ask because a dealer was supposed to make the DESS operative on my 2022 when I had it in to get the fuel pump recall done. That they did, and gave me the impression that the DESS issue was also taken care of. When I got home I tested the system with a regular magnet and the bike started. It was obvious it wasn't done.

I'm going back over there today and confront them about it and see what their reason was for not doing it. And, FWIW, the pump wasn't aligned properly (arrow between the lines) when they installed it. That I corrected myself.

Just another reason I don't trust dealers for squat.

Fixed! - They forgot to "activate" the DESS system, and the magnet trick didn't work this time. Got my original keys back (I'd marked them before my first visit). Not sure if it was just a programming process, or if the post was actually replaced (hence my question). I saw it in the original parts that were slated to be replaced when I first went in, so I suspect that the body did not need to be opened up. Still curious should someone know for sure.

We kissed and made up, so we're a happy camper.

I FINALLY got mine done a couple of days ago when I had the recall done with the fuel pump. I suspected that was what needed to be done, but they didn't have my bike in the back long enough to take much apart (I'd already removed the tank cover). I didn't know if they had to open the clamshell to get it out, and (originally) asked that question in the Tech section, but got no reply.
Anyway, when I got home, I tested it with a magnet and the bike still started. Took it back today and they ran it to the back, then brought it back about 15 minutes later with my original, marked keys. Seems like they forgot to activate the system. I took a magnet with me this time, and it didn't do squat, which was good.
Once I tweak the headlights up a skosh and get all the covers put back on, my 2022 Sport is finally up-to-date and good to go. We'll be headed over to WV in a few weeks to attend a folk festival and do a little old coal mine exploring down in the New River Gorge area - stuff I missed last year when I was at a bike rally on my heavy Concours. That rally was my tipping point when I finally admitted to myself that I could no longer safely handle the weight of that thing in tight places. I found my 2022 Sport a couple of months later, and here we are today.

One thing I was glad to see during this whole DESS key issue was that the modified comm cable that powers the OEM heated grips I installed a while back, now “talks” to the (assumed) BUDS2 reader for the programming. The grip's cable plugs into the data plug down beside the radiator and runs up behind the LH headlight into a little power supply/control module. Leads from that are connected to the LH grip which has a switch to set the various heat levels.

When you hook up that lower connection, you remove the original connector plug from its holder and hook that into the mating grip's cable plug. That grip's cable has pigtail coming off of it with a plug and you put that into the now vacant plug holder beside the radiator.

My concern came about when I plugged a conventional OBD II scanner into that pigtail plug and the scanner did not come alive. If I connected it to the original comm plug, it did. That made me wonder if the grip's harness had a wiring issue. Apparently it didn’t, so all is well in River City.

Ps - And yes, I do get concerned about trivial crap such as this.

Reading old threads about starting Rykers with a magnet, I can confirm it does indeed start.
My Ryker is a 2024 Ryker Sport, bought January this year.
I've just this morning been out to the trike, touched the RDF Post with a magnet, and the trike started. I think I will phone dealer. I don't know what he will say?

Welcome to the forum! Sounds par for the course. The factory supposedly updated some of the steering components in '22 models and up, but some of us found that wasn't the case, either. Your dealer will make it right, you'd think. Did you give them a call? Aside from that little glitch I hope you are enjoying the bike.

Sarah

Hello Sarah.
Yes, I am enjoying the bike.
I have phoned the dealer, he said bring the bike in with both keys,
so I'm just hoping for a break in the weather.

We have had very little rain for the last two months, only now it's into June, it's raining.
