Must power plugs always be hot?

When I bought my 2012 Spyder RT Ltd I had the dealer install 12v power outlets in the frunk and the back compartment on the side opposite the ipod plug. It appears that they are both "hot" all the time and I want to configure dash cameras (front and back) using capacitors as the only power supply. I need them both to go "cold" when the Spyder is turned off and "hot" when switched on. Does anyone know of a simple solution I could use?


I love my Spyder and would really appreciate anyone's help with this

On my 2014; I set the rear power port up as a keyed source of power during the riding season, and then re-configure it to be hot all of the time during storage.
This way; the XM Onyx receiver in the top trunk can be left alone and in place for the riding season, and the battery maintainer can occupy the same port, during nap time! :2thumbs:

Here's what you do..!!

the fuse box has spot 6 and 7 and you switch the fuse. I believe 6 is switched and 7 is hot. But an inline switch would be easier for when you need it to be hot..:thumbup:

I had the FZ-1 fuse block put in at Spyderfest last year. It has 2 sides for fuzes one hot all the time, one hot key on. You can switch it to either way you want it any time you want.

:agree: I changed the fuse on my RT specifically so that I could plug in a battery tender for winter storage. 24 degrees here last night with heavy frost this morning. But at least the battery is warm and toasty.

The power plug on a 2012 RT cannot have the operation changed from unswitched to switched by moving a fuse. That is only available on 2013 and later models.

The simplest solution would be to install a relay inline with the power plug. Using the original circuit for power and finding another switched circuit for a trigger.

Hi Billy, thanks for your reply. I've added 2 dash cams to my 2012 RT ltd & replaced the batteries with capacators so that they will switch on when power is applied and off when I switch power off. Could you offer any suggestion as to how to make my frunk and trunk 12vplugs go cold when power is switched off? My battery tender is wired direct to the battery.

sure would make turning both cameras off and on a whole lot easier. I've researched and tried out dozens of dash cameras for my Spyder and have settled on Mobius units. Look em up, for $75 you will be amazed!

Both of my 12v power plugs are wired to the factory harness hot 24/7. Since the wires are already there couldn't they be moved to a circuit that is switched? Sure would be one heck of a convenience. Now I have to turn each camera on and off every time I start or stop.

I'm sorry I did not answer sooner. I did not see that you asked me a question before now.

If I was doing what you are doing I would not use the existing power plugs. I think I would install a power plug on the dash or dedicated lines to each camera with a 2 wire plug disconnect. The choice would depend on how often you would be removing the cameras or if your cameras can be hooked up that way.

Either way, get your power from the battery with a inline fuse. Also splice inline an automotive relay to turn the power on and off. The trigger voltage for the relay can be from the running lights circuit, that go on and off directly from the key. You could also use one of load shedding relay circuits that go on when the engine starts.

If you decide the existing power plugs are the best way to go. Install the relay directly inline with the power plugs.

If you get a relay that is match to the ones BRP uses in the fuse box. You will now have a spare for switching out if needed.
