Mud on your Trailer

I've put a full fender on my trailer hitch and I took it for a ride Sunday. The roads were muddy in lots of places due to the recent heavy rains.

This is the fender I made.

After the ride the hitch was clean as well as the back of the spyder. The trailer had some mud on the black plastic front guard only, the rest was clean.

The mud.

My question is this less than the stock trailer hitch fender? How dirty does a trailer get with the stock fender?

Stock fender the trailer is covered, the plastic mud guard is caked and it fly's up and over the front lid all the way to the top of the back lid

Thats a major improvement

Your new fender is doing an awesome job !! My trailer is covered on the front and then sprayed on top from front to back

It could be worse...

This was what happened when I crossed over some construction area where they were using a wet saw to cut the concrete in the lane next to me while on the way to SpyderFest last year. The sludge was flowing accross my lane. I was probably running 20-25 MPH.

Holy Moly! that came off of the rear tire?

Probably most, if not all. Don't know if the front wheels contributed or not. Boy, what a gritty mess it was...

That would take more than a dust off and a can of Honda polish to get clean I'd bet.

I can't tell from the photo but do you have the stock 1/2 a fender on the hitch? My tech says 50% of his trailer hitch installs the 1/2 fender get knocked off when they leave his parking lot and leave them on the curb.

I got a lot of that road construction crap when coming to Spyderfest. It came off (reluctantly) when all the rain came at Spyderfest and I wiped it down.

I have the stock half fender/mud flap installed on the hitch. No mods to the RT's fenders.

My fender mod worked great for me. Kept mud off the trailer and rain off of the back of my neck. :doorag:

Thanks for confirming the idea is sound... I went through some similar exercises to get to the point I'm at now. I have a few more steps to take to get it just the way I want it. One thing I'm adding to the bracket is some weldnuts so you only need an allen key to remove the fender. It's those minor things you find as you install, remove, install, remove something to get it just right.

Now I understand why Ron (Rcspyder12) added a mudflap to his RT, he rides a lot in the rain and tire spray up your back can be annoying.

I forgot to add in my previous post that I had installed a mudflap installed today just like the one below.

John,
As my small brain is comprehending what you've done ; it appears that your RT's fender moves freely over and around the one that you added to the hitch...
Question: did you check for clearance at full compression of the rear suspension? :yikes:
I'm sorry if this is a dumb question... :opps:

Bob,

Yes you could say it that way. The fender I added to the hitch goes between the tire and the fender and as the frame moves down the fender to fender clearance gets closer at the tip of the factory fender but does not touch. If you look inside the factory fender the inside is vertical so there is plenty of clearance there.

It did take a few trial and error sessions to get the fender positioned to make sure the fenders do not touch at full compression of the rear shock (picture two guys with lots of gravitational attraction bouncing up and down on the spyder with the air at the low setting). I don't have a photo of that I was laughing too much to pick up the camera.

In this side view which shows the stock trailer hitch fender attached for visual reference you can see the clearance between the two fenders. You can also see the improved ground clearance my fender has because it is closer to the tire.

Git it!
Thanks for making it so much clearer...
I don't have the mind for figuring out how things should be put together... :opps:
