Motorcycles don't wave back.

I ride a Harley and my wife rides a F3-T. I normally ride behind her so I am not looking in my rear view mirrors all the time to make sure she is OK (she put 50K on the back of my Harley, less than 1K on her Spyder so far). I see how many other riders wave at her and it's no less then me on my Harley.
I wave at everybody, probably get 75% wave back. That's OK. It can be they didn't see it or too busy concentrating on the road, I am sure I miss some myself. It's a respect thing to me.
The only time I don't wave is at an event like Stugis, your arm would eventually fall off! ;o)

Wave

I usually WAVE to All the riders I see. Sometimes the conditions make this a little tough. So Wave when it SAFE and Just Enjoy your RYDE Time.

The Wave

We tend to wave whenever able - that is if we're busy maneuvering or trying to stay safe in heavy traffic - regardless whether the wave is returned. It's a simple signal of "fraternity" so to speak and it doesn't matter to us what the other individual(s) is/are riding. In our neck of the woods, the most common non-wavers are helmetless Harley riders though it's not universal. It must be a cool image thing?

I have a 2012 Can Am Spyder RT-S. And in the past, five Gold Wings, and three Harleys. But I don't feel any less "cool" on a Spyder if there was ever a need to feel cool or macho. I might feel more superior riding a Spyder than any helmet less, black vested, or jacketed rider on a Harley. But that's just me. And I do wave at everyone riding either a Spyder or conventional motorcycle. Sometimes they wave back, sometimes they don't. At least I made to effort to acknowledge another in the fraternity. And my day is all the brighter for having done so.

Wow, you got a real complex going there don't you? I've been riding with the same group of bikes that includes Spyders, Hondas, Indians, as well as Harley's for years. Nobody cares.
And even when I am with primarily Harley riders have I have never heard a statement as blatantly ignorant and elitist as that.

Its ok

I am new to the Spyder. I sold my 2003 Honda VTX 1800R and purchased a 2016 NEW RTS SE6 Pearl white in February. I am used to waving at all bikes 2 or 3 wheeled. Now not even 10% of the bikes I wave at will return the wave. They will look at me but not wave. I went to the Spyder because of my knees and the commute I have every day. I have been riding for 30yrs. Going to an automatic and 3 wheels has made my life much easier. I am enjoying this forum and all of the great info.

Thanks
Marty
Don't feel bad. I got the same treatment when we had our goldwing. If they do they do and if not oh well. Most people will wave and a few won't. If they are riding 2 up watch the girl on the back. Most of the time they will stick out a hand or 2 fingers. But congrates on the new ride. Welcome to the :spyder2: family. Happy Trails :riding: Enjoy the Ride.

Many of those others just don't want to break their Cool Status by acknowledging something that can out maneuver them and in many cases just flat out beat them.
Amen my Brother. Good Thinking . Long live us Speed Demons.:riding::b2b:

Marty, unfortunately you have unfriendly riders in your neck of the woods. In California I would estimate that 8 out of 10 waive!

Wave ir bit!

Hi Marty!
I think you have my bykes twin! After my 2010 RT got totalled, I got a 2016 RT Limited. Thats a SE, and its also Pearl White. Still getting used to the paddle shifter.

I wave at anything that looks like a motorcycle. Most wave back, some don't. Sometimes I don't see the other bike/biker until its past waving time. Hope they dont think I'm a snob.

My wife and I rode to Springfield to eat dinner today and put 139 miles on the Spyder. We saw a lot of bikes and waved at all of them. Our "wave return rate" was 100%! I attribute this to a great spring day and the riding season being young. It seemed there was at least one of every kind of bike made out there today.

When I took the motorcycle safety course, the instructors said that they each knew of one of two long time riders who will not take their hand off of the handlebars. That's just the way some are. Many times if a rider is riding two up, they will leave the wave duty to the passenger.

Either way, it doesn't matter to me. We don't know what is on the other rider's mind or if they even saw us. Just as said earlier, a wave is a gift. It doesn't cost much, just a slight effort. So give freely!

I would say about 75% here. When I rode a Victory, only 30% of Harley riders would wave back!

Congrats and welcome!

Now not even 10% of the bikes I wave at will return the wave.

Two things....possibly:

They have actually seen Spyders on the road so infrequently that their attention is on the machine and forget to wave.

If most of your riding is in an urban area with moderate to heavy traffic maybe their attention is more on the hazards of riding and they don't notice you until it's too late.

I don't wave at anybody when the traffic is heavy; didn't on 2 wheels either.

I would estimate that in Canada 98% of bikes wave. The missing 2% are either too busy to wave or are a true 1%er.

I even catch a few true 1%er's who will do a quick two finger dip if no one else is watching. LOL

Someone mentioned a nice spring day and that does warrant a wave even from the most hardened biker mother#2$%&! ...

I remain flummoxed as to why people feel the need the check whether the other rider waves back. I wave to them, because that’s the way I am.....if I am too busy with other things like watching the braking B-double in front, I often don’t wave......what the other rider does, is entirely their business.

Personally, I think any issues claimed with loss of bike control are caused more by people rubbernecking to see if the rider waves back, than taking a hand briefly off the bars.

Yeah Pete, the main reason I'm ryding is to enjoy it, & unless I'm too busy with staying in control/ryding safely, I generally wave or acknowledge other riders (& sometimes even pedestrians or drivers!) while I'm doing so, but I'm waaaayy too busy enjoying myself to worry over them returning my wave or not!

Besides, my Wife swears that I ALWAYS get waved at anyway; be it in the cage, on the Spyder, in a boat, on a paddleboard on the river, or flying in an aircraft! She reckons there's gotta be a signal somewhere that lights up to tell everyone to wave when I'm in control that she hasn't found yet, cos wherever we are, whatever we are doing, I get the waves, she doesn't!! :sour: Even in areas where the locals are notorious for NOT waving at 'outsiders' or where they may even normally be actively hostile towards outsiders, I get smiles & waves but she doesn't, & others don't!! I reckon it's just the pure 'enjoyment of life cos I woke up this morning' vibes emanating from whatever vehicle we may be in/on that triggers an instinctive happy response, but I really don't care if they return my wave or not. I'm just enjoying it, & sharing that enjoyment by waving - if they don't respond similarly, it's their loss, but I reckon they just might be feeling a little brighter inwardly anyway!

So just Ride more, Worry Less - and Wave at anyone & everyone without ever expecting a response! :2thumbs:

I actually waved to an older guy in a 3 wheel mobility scooter the other day. Judging from the way his face lit up and the way he nearly fell out waving back, he got a real kick out of it. Perhaps he was a motorcyclist in a previous life. Made me feel pretty good to see that reaction too

Marty, it's a game and here's how you play. You 'guess' which of the cyclists will wave back. It's a learned skill and you'll get pretty good at it. Every time you're right, wave or no wave, you win a point! For example, if it is a single Harley, you'll probably get a wave...two or more not so much. If it's a group of Harley or rice burners, the last rider has the highest probability. Also, the wives are big wavers. Of course, you should always wave if you overcome a group of Harley drivers cause you just know it's pissing them off you can...and just did!;)
