Motorcycle "Safety" Check Points on way to Daytona

No offense to you sir, but your chiming in on a discussion that was between two people expressing opinions on a relative topic. It certainly looks to me that your the one trying to cause the disturbance here. If people disagree on a topic they should have the right to debate it (within the rules of course, which we were). I hope your not saying in the time you have posted on Spyderlovers, you never once express a posting of disagreement with anyone, of any kind. Because I'll be happy to look.

And, no offense to you but you are barking up the wrong tree. Best for you to knock it off... quickly. This is not the way to win friends and influence enemies.

Scotty is the technical backbone of this site and has way more friends than you. You can't win. Period. So, stop.

Besides, who would want to ride in Georga anyway???

ummmmmmmm...........me? The guy who posted this thread in the first place due to the fact I live just over the border on the coast in South Carolina and I want to go to Daytona?

I'd like to post a smart remark but I'm stumped by such a stupid question.

Thank you i knew someone from that area would remember the story. if you read the story 45min is way out of line as a former truckdriver i have pulled into many check stops and alot of the times i would be out in 20-30 min at most but 45 min for a motorcycle it does not take that long to check papers listen to exhaust and check lights heck its basically a pre ride check does it take any of you 45 min to do it?

Not to offend where you live - t'was just ment as a snide remark.

Load up with gas cans and don't spend a dime in Georgia...If I ever wanted to go to one of those "gatherings", and had a similar situation, I would avoid going through the state, but that's just me. I've found that keeping my wallet in my pocket is the only vote that's really listened to...

I found out that there is a Motorcycle safety checkpoint just south of the South Carolina border in Georgia on I95.
Does anyone know of any other checkpoints on the way to Daytona?
I'm leaving my home around 7am to get to Daytona around noon or 1pm to meet other:spyder2: ryders, and hope that is the only one to contend with. Anyone know if there are any others on 95?:helpsmilie:

That is a first for around here. I do know that coming home from Biketoberfest, just shy of Savannah, they had a bunch of cars out with detectors and cameras. At least they had signs warning about the use of the cameras. I was not pulled over and did not receive a ticket in the mail either.

Let us know if you run into any of these situations on your way back home, as it sounded like the one on the way down will only be for Saturday traffic.

I hope you have a great time, and have fun ryding the track as well. :2thumbs:

Yessir, do have a great time. I would love to get my wheels on that asphalt! Especially up on the banking, if they let you go up there :D. That must be a cool sensation.

Seems the safety inspection angle could be legit...though a load of doo-doo.

However, if they find nothing wrong, I doubt they have sufficient probable cause to search the bike.

Basic probable causes are odor (booze/smoke), plain sight (bong riding pillion), and furtive gesture (acting like you are destroying evidence).

External drug dog hits are legit probable causes for search. However, they can't let it into the vehicle without your permission...or the dog hits externally first. (Illinois v. Cabelles) BUT... without probable cause, they can't hold you to wait for a sniff (Lilly v. Arkansas).

WITHOUT CAUSE, you have a right to refuse search. Above all, don't get nasty. Set phone or iPod to voice record, reference your Fourth Amendment rights. Inquire to the probable cause for inspecting bags. And, if you are doing nothing illegal, you'll be on your way.

The Federal Goverment MONEY is doing many of the M/C only grants. I think one/some were in new York.
Read the AMA magazine. There have losts of this kind of stuff. The cops stopped a on/off event because they did not feel a dual sport was legal on the highway.

Arought bunch of bikers were stopped by police ( I think NC ), video taped and asked all kinds of poor questions. The bu7nch turned out to be Blue Knights. They sued and won, but the "Feds" ????

Of course they want to ban youth size ATV or motorcycles because the kids might eat the lead in the battry

IF IT IS A VEHICLE CHECK, OKAY. MOTORCYCLE CHECK NO

I LOVE MY COUNTRY, BUT I FEAR MY GOVERMENT.

On March 3, 2011, Representative Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI) introduced H.R. 904. This bill would prohibit the Secretary of Transportation from providing grants or any funds to states or local governments to be used for any program to create motorcycle-only checkpoints (MOCs).

If you are aginst this questionable practice, I urge you to support this bill. For more information, visit http://www.americanmotorcyclist.com/rights/issueslegislation.

Now that's what I like! Solutions! Petitions sent!

Thanks Scotty!

Great find Scotty!

I filed a message with my rep and shared a link with all of my riding friends.

No prob, just caught me off guard at the wrong time!
I avoided the checkpoint by taking the scenic route to Savannah and cutting over.

Had a great time in Daytona- even if I didn't go up on the banks!

It was nice to meet a few new folks and reintroduce myself to others..

I'll try and get my act together and post some pics as well.

...And THANK YOU Scotty for the petition link to try and end these "safety checkpoints"

Which reminds me- on my way home that night I was doing 80mph on 95 in the middle when a biker flew by me- about 3' away from me, and traffic was moderately heavy. Seconds later, 4 or 5 more bikes flew by, and they were passing/ swerving on both sides of vehicles. It was less than 20 minutes later that I had 2 patrol cars fly by me and I could see way up in the distance red lights flashing, then traffic coming to a standstill, when I got up to the red light- it was paramedics working on a crumpled body next to the guardrail on the inside lane, His bike was a mangled mess about 75yards up the road.

Safety checkpoints may verify your bike is safe, but the way you ryde could mean the difference on whether you make it home at all.:doorag:

Glad to hear you made it home without any problems Tom. It must have been a great feeling to be able to trust your Spyder for the entire trip after what happened with it last year.

Hopefully the crumpled rider survived this incident to learn a very valuable lesson. That is one of the primary reasons they have a no chase policy around these parts now, too many of these guys running and crashing.

I agree with BajaRon on this....

I think this is all about revenue-- just as speeding tickets are.

In Michigan they cannot do check points like this-- not for anything.

Setting up such a check point when entering a state is really pushing it... and those states will lose out in the end as eventually people won't go to that state.

If they keep this up, I would say it would only take one year of bikers boycotting events in states and they would learn their lesson. Far more $$$ flows into the state because of the bikers going to events than they could ever get with their stupid checkpoints.

They don't have the time or resources to properly inspect all these bikes for safety---- and if they DO check my bike for safety and then something goes wrong and I crash---- are THEY liable since they said it was safe to ride??

While I wouldn't be happy about it, I would get into their 'safety check' line --- but I'll be damned if I'll let them search inside for anything---not without a warrant!

Well said! I don't have any respect for donut munchers or the legislators they do their dirty work for. About 10 years ago I had a run in with a cammando statey (still had powdered sugar around his mouth) who was a complete moron! He pulled me over for speeding and promptly arrested me for alledgedly stealing the truck I was driving. To make a long story short, after sitting in his car handcuffed for 45 minutes he realizes he ran a car plate instead of a truck plate. The car plate # was reported stolen back in the mid 80's. He still gave me a ticket and cut me loose. What a puke! It's all about the coin folks. Money Money Money!

Pretty "on point" analysis. What has really happened over the years is that the courts and lawyers in an attempt to get into our private lives have come up with very innovative ideas and arguments to justify a search. I personally blame this on the so called "war on drugs". (meaning that the end justifies the means) However, it is a reality and best all are aware of it.

My final thought

As long as the law tells us i have to pull in i will do it i have nothing to hide { no i don't like it} If they save 1 life it's worth it.
I also believe if they are really doing this in the interest of safety then pull everyone in and i don't believe anyone would be arguing it as harrassment.
only the guilty have fear.

My apologies in advance if I missed it, but did this apply to only motorcycles that were being ridden? What about those being trailered?

Interesting. Everyone's got their own story and here is mine.

My brother was also in the fire department. On his way to work one morning (in uniform of course) he gets stopped for a brake light out. So far so good.

Then he gets arrested for an "Outstanding Warrant". Officer wouldn't give him any information, just cuffed and stuffed him. Now you have to know my brother. He's nothing like me. He is a nice guy, easy going, zero attitude, wouldn't bother anyone.

They throw him in the county slammer (San Diego County, just a small, friendly facility there). Now he is still in full uniform and it isn't looking good! 9 other Hooligans in the same cell. And he looks enought like a cop to make a few of them not like him right off the bat. Imagine that!

The biggest, meanest, nastiest guy in there gets in his face and say's 'Are you Don Athon?' (well, he had a name tag on so how do you answer that question?).

My brother answers in the affirmative. he guy smiles (not always a good thing in jail), and say's. 'I'm Dave Davis', you don't recognize me do you?'

Dave Davis was a good buddy of ours in High School. Hadn't seem him since he graduated. Guess he was busy pursuing a 'Higher Education'.

Anyway, he turns to the rest of the guys in the cell and say's 'Anyone messes with this guy, messes with me'. And then eveyone loved my brother. Funny how people can change their minds!

It was Superbowl Sunday. I remember because I was getting ready for the big game when my brother called (his 1 phone call). So, I go down to the jail house, and they tell me there is no such person in their facility. They explain to me that you can't bail out a person that isn't there. GREAT!

After waiting 3 hours, they decided that yes, they did have a Don Athon in custody. After only 2 more hours I had him out. A very productive day.

Some time later he had his court date. When they read the name off it was not him. The arresting officer had spelled his name wrong (now remember, he was wearing a NAME TAG!). The warrant came back on the misspelled name and the rest is history.
