More on the hybrid Spyder

Was thinking the same thing. You hang a "green" tag on anything and the price goes up to ridiculous levels. I'll stick with 14 thank you...

I agree, Also it seems like the people who can well afford the higher price of a green vehicle,
Are the same ones that high gas prices affect the least. :dontknow:

I'm interested in seeing a price. If it's anything like pricing on hybrid cars then :yikes:

Aw, man, not all hybrids are that expensive. Prius starts at around 21-22k. I got mine in 2007, new, cost 24k, with bluetooth, backup camera, and all sorts of other goodies. It's the best darn deal I've ever got on a vehicle (and as for room, I can haul longer items in it than I can in our Honda CR-V!). So a hybrid doesn't necessarily need to be expensive. I've never understood why the technology is marked up so high on other models.

My Spyder is my gas hog; I've managed to average 62 mpg on a tank in the Prius. Not bad for a 3000-pound vehicle. I'd love a hybrid Spyder... provided they don't gouge the consumer on the technology, like on some other hybrids. I guess we'll see how BRP handles that. I hope they are reasonable about it.

The 600 cc ACE Motor develops 60 hp. Size will restrict the electric portion of this to have about 30 hp MAX , more realistic is 15 to 20. so we would be looking at best (when the ACE motor is coupled with the electric motor for full acceleration) of about 80 hp with torque somewhere close to the torque we have now. That hp will be available for short bursts only and the machine will be heavier by about 150 pounds if they hit their targets. This will be a good commuter but not for the sport crowd. :chat:

Only the ones that look halfway decent. :dontknow:

I know some Hybrids have little computer graphics of trees and flowers blooming if you are doing well. :) :congrats: Mine would probably look like a forest fire with smoldering trees and dead flowers. :( :yikes: No thanks I'll stick with pure gasoline. :D

I think you and I would be in the same group.

I would like to rent a Presis or however you spell it and see what kind of really bad millage I could get out of it. That could be fun in an evil kind of way. Insert evil laugh here.

I am not sure how bad it could get if you kept your foot in it. Would it be possible to ever cause the batteries to overcharge and explode? :D

My team lead at work has a Prius. They really need to put a back up beeper on the outside of the vehicle. He almost backed into me, as the car makes no noise at all when first started and going in reverse. I had no idea he was even in the car when I started walking behind it. He stopped and I asked him about it. Funny thing is, he has a beeper inside the car that goes off when it is in reverse but it can't be heard on the outside of the car, and it is not a rear sensor system either.

This also makes me wonder about the electric motorcycles they are developing. I have seen some that look extremely cool and everything, but I now think they are going to have to use some kind of a sound chip in order to let people know they are in the area. :dontknow:

The BBC America show "Top Gear" did an interesting test. They took a Prius and a BMW M3 to the race track. The Prius had to run WFO and the M3 had to only keep up with it...
The Prius managed about 17mpg
The M3 was up around 19mpg!
Their findings were that if you wanted to buy an economy car; Buy an M3!

Snowmobile Engine

BRP fields two snowmobile engines; one is an 800cc; the other a 600cc. These engines, along with the electric motor may be fine on an RS form factor; but despite the anticipated 375 mile range, I ponder how much utility the machine would have beyond a commuter. Moreover, with current dry weight of approximately 227 pounds more than an RS, I have a difficult time imagining a 100-200cc smaller engine on an RT form factor, if the intent is for highway speeds and long distance touring. I know engine displacement is not the sole factor in determining vehicle horsepower, average cruising speeds and ride-ability; however, among the improvements wish list on current Spyders, many have voiced a call for a larger displacement engine. Not a criticism, just a question. Comments?

Hybrids are, in general, better suited to commuter operation, IMO. They do not have a major advantage in highway use. I think of them as short distance, city vehicles, that can be taken on the highway when needed. This thinking brought up some interesting questions in my mind, as I looked at the hybrid concept vehicle at the IMS in Chicago, yesterday. They have done a lot of streamlining on the vehicle, in certain places, in an attempt to cheat the wind, but wind is more of a factor at highway speeds. Mkes me think that they are also looking at features that could be incorporated into the existing design someday. Not sure where this is headed, but it is interesting that BRP is exploring the idea. If it ever bears fruit, it will certainly not be a vehicle for all enthusiasts to embrace, but it could open new makets, that are as yet unexplored.

We would absolutely buy one if they sold it today. We do a LOT of city driving and live in a hyper active tree hugging atmosphere right now. It would get them off my back. And frankly we do like to re-use building materials and furniture and love the idea of leaving a smaller footprint on the planet if possible.

Heck if someone would actually create a set of solar panels and or a pair of fan units that would allow me to not have to use the city power company we would do that as well!

In the end it is going to be about the cost/benefits... It has to make since :2thumbs:

Would you buy one if the performance was cut by 20-30%? I'm trying to figure out how many would buy a motorcycle if it lacked the 'thrill' of the ride.

Scooters are great for local commutes...so, too, is the smart car, prius, etc...you ain't gonna have a fun ride, but it's a ride...

I wouldn't trade my spyder for a hybrid if it lacked the umph of this one...just not as much fun...being most buy a spyder/motorcycle for fun and not as a primary vehicle, it should definitely supply the fun part!

Trust me, I had a hybrid Lexus for 5 years and loved it...however, if you ran it hard, it didn't do great on mileage...it cost about 7k more than the RX350...not really worth it if I were to do it again...it was faster though...nice touch, but not worth the extra expense...

hybrid

People forget that BRP is a leader in the snowmobile industry when it comes to making a machine lighter while still maintaining structural integrity. With materials like carbon fibre, aluminum, magnesium, titanium, etc they could easily compensate the weight factor for an electric motor and batteries.
I would not worry about it being a a commuter vehicle only. We may be happy to have it the way oil prices are being affected by middle east turmoil.
