Modified windshield, oh what a difference.

One of the things I enjoy about riding is the wind in your face. Never had a windshield on any of the motorcycles I've owned in some 45 years, although I did try a few here and there. Of course, Synthia has a shield and it works very well, or did until summer came. Others have done something like this, so nothing new but I am very pleased with results and thought I'd share.

Picked up a used shield from a member here and carefully measured the stock shield in both the all down position and all up position. Used a jigsaw with an all purpose blade, taped the shield so as not to mar the surface and cut out 3-1/2 inches. Sanded the edge with fine grit wet sand paper and finished off the shield with chrome trim that I had left over from my Kawa Vulcan.

Modified shield allows the air I wanted and when raised to the highest position its at the same height the stock shield was in the lowest position (which is where I kept it 99% of the time). And once fall comes, I can switch back and have the additional protection if needed. Worked for me!

Looks great! Would love to be able to modify my old BRP shield like this... These 95° days in Georgia are terrible and if you don't have that airflow, it's miserable!

Good post - especially with the pics.

Curiosity question. The mechanism to raise the windscreen is an arm devise that swings through about a 180 degree rotation. This means the fully down and the fully up position has the windscreen at more of an upright orientation relative to the wind. If you have a soft front suspension, the windscreen is even more upright. If you place the windscreen in the half raised position, it tilts the screen back. So my question to you is this:

Do you notice much difference in the air flow between full up (or down) vs half way up?

2015 special edition windshields

I took a test ride on a 2015 RTS Special Edition while I was waiting for my 2011 to be given a trade in value. The windshield on the SE seems to be just about the same as you made. In the up most position it seemed to be in the low position on my 2011. For those of us afraid to take a saw to one!

I think you are correct. I picked up a shorty off of a 2015 RTS-S during Spyderfest and I will probably put it on when I return from my Alaska trip. I think it might be nice to have in the Las Vegas summer heat.

Jerry, you raise a good question, but I do not know the answer. I've only had it in the all down position, but I shall try it half way up and full up and let you know.

Interesting idea, I like it.

Do you have any issues with glare from the chrome about eye level?

Thanks for sharing your project!

I'm new to the adjustable windshield thing, I have the 2014 RTS, mine has a 3.5" difference between up to down. Is this correct?

Good job! I did that to mine about 3 months ago and I love it. I actually took a total of 7" off mine (it is now 18" vs. 25"). In the full up position it feels just like the stock windshield. In the down position, there is more wind noise, and harder to hear the radio. I normally keep it in the 1/2 way, to lower position around town, and in the upper position when on the highway above 55 mph.

No - but doesn't mean it isn't there, because I use either a dark shield or wrap around sunglasses when the sun is out.

Windshield

My windshield is the right size and works good, it has a raddle that I cannot be stopped, do you think a new windshield would work. It does it in all settings.

Mounting bolts???

Consider that a mounting bolt has loosened. Both the shield and its movable mounting.

I recently purchased the BRP vented windshield-----What a difference in the heat. It's about 1 1/2"lower that the stock RT-S shield. Good for my height as I don't like looking through a windshield but good for my wife when raised. She gets no buffeting and I get air flow ( for the cooling vest and helmet) when the shield is fully raised.

Perfect!!

Thanks. Had I not had the trimming left over I would not have gone out and bought it, you just have to sand the cut edge to make it smooth. Good luck.:D
