Mode button Start up Screen Issue ?

I have a Spyder RT-S SE5 2010 model

This fault if it is one, has started to appear a couple of time recently

When Starting the Spyder - Can Am logo displayed followed by warning in the cluster display
BEFORE OPERATING READ THE
SAFETY CARD ABOVE THEN
PRESS MODE BUTTON.

I press the Mode Button - Normal display appears eg. Mileage, Revs etc

I press the starter button - Spyder fires right up

Sometimes the Cluster display will go blank - Engine still running normally
The Can Am logo will reappear - Engine still running normally
followed by warning in the cluster display
BEFORE OPERATING READ THE
SAFETY CARD ABOVE THEN
PRESS MODE BUTTON. -
Engine still running normally

I press the Mode Button again and the Normal display appears eg. Mileage, Revs etc Engine still running normally
I then ride off no other issues

Questions - is this a fault or just a gremlin
Should I be able to ride off with a blank screen and if I did would the display sort itself out with out me having to press the mode button again
Anyone had this issue and if so how do you rectify it

Thanks

This has happened to me a few times also but not lately. dont have a clue of what happened tho. Someone may have an answer for the both of us.

Check the battery voltage and connctions (at the battery, not under the seat). Check that the rear frame ground (negative jumper under the seat) is tight. Check the connector at the back of the display. If all these are sound, you may have a bad cluster. Not sure what the consequences would be of trying to ride that way, but I'm not sure I would try it farther than the end of my driveway.

This has happened on our 2010 RT-S as well

Every time it would happen, the screen would go blank, then reset & we'd have to press the mode button to get it to continue to the normal screen, but you can do that anytime, even while riding. More a PITA than anything. You may try doing a search for 'Instrument Cluster Problems' or something to that effect, as it has been posted about before. If memory serves correctly, some had loose connections while others had to have their cluster replaced. We traded our 2010 before figuring out what our specific issue was. Good luck;)

Check the simple stuff first, (The oft-maligned battery...), and then move your way up the chain.
Good Luck, and Please let us all know what you find!

Interesting, I just installed HID headlights from Xenon Depot without the Relay. After starting I have to hit the mode selecter switch again. I don't think the cluster goes dark, if it does, it is just a flicker. I was thinking this was a momentary low voltage situation as the lights were starting up. All terminals are tight and the battery is fully charged. (Battery Tender)
:dontknow:
2011 RS
No other electrical mods
No Fog Lights
Temp In Garage about 35 to 40 deg. F.

Seems to me. .!!

Seems like a loose connection. Check battery, pull cluster (if possible) check fuses etc. On the other hand if all works well just that annoyance keep an eye out for any other cluster change then swap for known good one and see if the problem continues. If not replace cluster.. :dontknow:

Can't give the exact mechanical advice here. I was also thinking battery connection related. Will watch and hope to learn more. Let us know what you find out.

Yes, good idea to check to make sure the relays are all seated well, toio...although that usually stalls the Spyder.

Our 2012 RT LTD does it all the time as well. It started shortly after we bought it and continues today. New battery, dealer has went through it 3 times to correct the issue but it pursists. I did add HID lights and I kept getting check engine or DPS or transmission till I put a relay in but the same issue remains with the cluster. I have just gotten used to tapping the mode button again and enjoy the ride. If you do find anything I will be watching for a fix. Till then......tap and ride.

Just a note on this. When you was your bike put a bag over both bars . Mine would leak water in side the Handel bars.so I took it apart and packed it with water grease to keep it out the water that is. And all work great. Also I did pull of the cluster and grease pack it to. You can get it at any parts stores . Works will. We are in the Oregon rain all the time also make shure all battery cables are clean to , and some grease on them for that to. Good luck works great for me.PS the due leak at the bars both sides

same with my 2012 rt se5

i'm so glad to see that someone else has had this same problem. i bought my spyder in oct 12 and had this same thing happen to me 8 times in the month i got to ride it before i had to put it away for winter. when i pushed the mode button it would straighten out and quickly revert back to the read your safety card screen and then go blank again. it would take several tries before it straightened out. several times i was over 200 miles away from home and from a dealer. i took it to the dealer and he could never replicate it or know what was causing it.

i will print out some of your suggestions and take it to my dealer the next time i go there.

Connections

I agree with Scotty, I had a similar problem with my 2012 RT when I first got it, the starter relay was back. This is the best place to get things resolved, form other owners.

This may help some of you out. Wife's 2013 STS had issues with the LCD screen going blank. My dealer found this...BRP TST.jpg Our Spyders sit outside with a full cover on them. So heat build up was definitely possible.

Not just RT's...

Since you said you had an ST-S (and another ST owner chimed in) this is more a global Spyder problem than the Title of the document (which refers to RTs only) would indicate. I shall keep an eye on my ST-L. Thanks for sharing the document :)

We never heard anything back from Eddie about this issue... :dontknow:

Sorry Bob

Should have posted this report

The only issue I could think of was I was using the Spyder for short trips and it would sometimes come up with this problem - Checked battery New battery Odyssey had been fitted and terminals all appeared to be ok
If I put the Spyder on my battery tender after each trip the Spyder start up is normal and also when used on long trips including my recent trip to Germany no issue with the Mode start up screen

Having read the post ref it is considered normal I have not worried about it and have learnt to live with the odd
time it happens

Again sorry for not getting back before but most of the other post seemed to have covered it

Bob - Have read your post ref the issue you are having on your Spyder (throttle bodies ?) Hope you get it sorted and It might be worth running the outcome by BRP if new Throttle Bodies are required as there is a documented history of TB Problems with other models and may offer to offset some in not all of the costs
