Mirror Extension Question

I read the "how to" and have my instructions, but I would like to know if anyone out there decided to cut and splice the wires rather than take the wires out, pull the plug, etc????

Since I spliced and diced the wires on my Honda when I owned it (adding light bar, fancy orange night-time lights, etc), I'm very familiar with that whole procedure. Pretty darned good at it too!!! :D

I'm thinking this might be the way for me to go, given the hard time I had with the risers..... :opps:

So..... opinions???

I did the cut and splice procedure when I installed the extensions on my wife's Spyder. It was going to be much quicker for me to do that than to try and get the wires out of the socket and put them back in. Its worked great. I put heat shrink over each individual wire, soldered them together and then put the heat shrink over the solder joint and shrunk it down to create a virtually waterproof connection.

I am a little confused but will try to help Vampy. I have the Kewlmetal mirror extensions and you do not cut or unplug anything. The wires sit in a machined out groove in the extension and then a cover goes on top to hide everything.Good luck.

ESI extensions are manufactured differently than the KewlMetal ones that you have. They have a hole that you have to put the wires through, not a groove with a cover that the wires sit in.

Aw man!!! Had I known that, I wouldn't have gotten the ESI ones!!!

Oh well. A splicin' a will go!! Thanks bjt!!!!

The ESI ones look a little more finished than the KewlMetal ones (my wife had KewlMetal and switched to ESI) and my wife and many other people report that they work better so you should be very happy with your ESI purchase.

I separated the wires from the sockets and everything works fine. I probably could have completed the install sooner had I cut and spliced, but the results are the same. I do notice that my mirrors vibrate like crazy now! I can't make out a car from a motorcycle when I'm on the highway and it looks like there are multiple cars behind me when there is just one car, so I've been trying to come up with something that I can do to stop the vibration.

I seem to get this anyway, so it won't be much of a difference....

Are you sure the nibs line up with the slots between the extensions and the stock part of the mirror stalk? If they aren't lined up, you will get a vibration. And, if you've tightened the extensions down without the nibs/slots being lined up, you've probably flattened the nibs.

There have been a few threads which have discussed this problem; but, I cannot locate. In one of the threads, which I cannot locate, someone used a star washer on each mirror extension to get them to lock in place after flattening the nibs.

Of course, your problem may be completely different

Not sure what you're referring to about the 'nibs'...:dontknow: That could very well be my problem since I never got this much vibration without the extensions. Can you provide a pic or clarify what you mean?

If you have the ESI mirror extensions, it's step #12. Sorry, I don't have any pictures.

I tried pasting a link to the instructions; but, I can't get it to work.

I don't have a picture, but the nubs resemble a radiation placard! Three raised bumps on the piece that attaches directly to the bike, and the extension piece has 3 divots in it. They are "supposed" to go together and keep the mirror stable. I say "supposed" because I just put mine on. The divots weren't deep enough, and my mirrors kept moving around--no matter how tight I got the bolt/screw!!!! I believe I have solved my problem with Gorilla glue!! I won't know until tomorrow. I'm going to give it overnight to set up and dry before I try a road test!!

If you can't fix it with duct tape, use Gorilla glue I say!!! :roflblack::roflblack:

If that doesn't work, I'll take it to my uncles' house and see what he can do.... ;) He's got welders and all that kinda stuff..... :2thumbs:

The washers?? I'm about to install the mirrors and see that there are 4 washers in with the package but I can't see in the instructions where they go. Anyone figure that out and care to share??
Thanks.

They are to shim between the two sides so you get a snug match and they are not loose on the arms. You may need two or none. Hope that makes sense- hard to explain.

I unfortunately couldn't get a tight fit on my nibs so I would get a bit of rattle, too. Fixed the problem by buying a few star lock washers at Home Depot and putting them on top, right underneath the head of the torx screw holding the extension to the Spyder body.

Every month or so I re-tighten the torx screw, but that takes all of one second, no biggie. Love the extensions, they look great, and they're absolutely necessary if you have risers on your RS.
