• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Method for determining when to replace brakes - suggestions

I am looking for a regular guy method checking brakes to determine if they need replacement. I would like to avoid taking wheels off, etc. Is there an easy way to determine when it is time to replace the brakes?

You can't do it easily if you have bad knees or hips. A small flashlight and a dentist-type mirror will do the trick. Get down and check the thickness of your pads. If they're as thin or thinner than a credit card, it's time. If one side is thick and the other is thin, you'll need to address that too. Lots of luck, that's not my favorite job.
 
the actual measurement for pad replacement is 1mm. That is a little thicker than a credit card. For some reason the Spyder tends to wear the rear brake pads faster than the fronts, usually about 2 to 1 for the rear. Be sure to put some kind of anti squeal paste on the back of the pads. BajaRon carries EBC pads which actually perform better than the OEM pads and come with good instructions on how to install.
 
The reason the rears wear more quickly (which is pretty much the opposite of every other vehicle) is that to stabilize the machine, the rear brake comes on first and releases last. If you're doing a lot of stop & go, or you're relatively easy on your brakes, it accentuates this wear characteristic because the single rear brake is doing almost all the work. While the dual front brakes are just coasting along.

However, if you are aggressive, do a lot of hard, higher speed braking, then the wear differential will be much less. Because about 70% of your stopping power is in the front. So, in hard or longer applications, heavier loads are handled by the front.

While everyone is correct that 1mm is the BRP listed wear limit. We've found that letting the rear brake get to this dimension risks having the piston come off the self-adjusting threads, which increases the grief factor exponentially with an already cringe worthy rear brake service. Why Brimbo does not put just 1 more set of threads on this caliper piston is beyond me.

I’m not saying that anyone should obsess about the rear brake. But I would recommend looking into a new set of pads a little before they reach the 1mm point.
