Melted Master Cylinder 2013 RT

Well, had the recall done over the weekend at Bradford Marine and mine was one of the Spyders that had the melted MC, (Luckily the melting was not all the way through) the dealer replaced it in about two and a half hours and all is well, they replaced the entire master cylinder and replaced the brake fluid, the Canister was not damaged. I am one of the 2013 Owners that is enjoying the Ryde, handling etc on the 13s, I know some have had problems but i am happy with mine. The main point of this post is GET THE RECALL CHECKED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

How many miles do you have on your bike?

Joe, I'm glad to hear that all is well. Mine was the exact same as yours, and my dealer did the very samething as yours. I fall in your catagory with your spyder.

Hope to get out to Arkansas way one of these days.

8,000 Miles on it :ohyea::ohyea:

I was asking because maybe some of the bikes have not been affected because they have low mileage. Spoke with my dealer today and he said nothing was melted on mine. My bike gets so hot it blisters the inside of my thighs and I have boiling gas, but I only have 3900 miles on the bike. If I had double the miles, I wonder if I would have heard the same story? Just a thought.

I ride with Hiway Pegs so my legs are never near the tupperware (i Ride a RT) i just wonder if the seating position has any effect ??

If you ever get to Arkansas we have plenty of extra space and would love to be your host

I've only got 870 miles on mine, and it's only one month and 10 days old. I checked my MC and it's OK for now. I also wrapped my exhaust pipe in front of the MC while I'm waiting on the recall. I checked with the dealer earlier this week, they still are waiting on parts... they're due on 9/28, and I'm #17 on the recall work list. The only real heat area for me is my right foot, but it's not horrible. My wife has no complaints as a passenger.

The recall has address all the issues of melting parts to BRP's engineering standards. You can be sure this was not a quick fix and there was destructive testing done to make sure this problem is solved. I see no need for any backyard engineering to be done for the melting parts issue.

As far as rider comfort I think there are a few things that can be done. I worked with Spyderpops to fix the issues I had and my last problem was I was still getting a very hot right foot and I was able to seal the cracks where the heat was coming from and now I'm very happy with the mods that helped me. I'm sure that the vented side panel that's on the 14's will do wonders for moving hot air out of the engine compartment while moving. It's not going to do anything for you sitting in traffic but I was able to put mine to the test while trying to get into the parking lot at the balloon fest in NY. We didn't move much for about an hour and it was hot but the Spyder did fine and I wasn't burning up. :doorag:

Lamont, I am a first time spyder owner, got 2013 Black St. When will the vented side panels be available for my bike and what if you know will they cost? I assume they will fit my bike. Thanks for the help

The dealership just called . . . it was the Spyder mechanic. My Spyder is done . . . he said he discovered, last night, as he was wrapping things with the recall insulation, that my charcoal canister also melted :yikes: . . . he admitted that he should of checked it last week, when he ordered the other parts :banghead:, so he pulled one off a Spyder in the showroom that was waiting to have the recall work done . . . I thanked him for doing that. I see some ryding in my near future!

Do we really need that charcoal canister, can't it be removed and vented under the bike? Then use the wrap that was for canister to double warp the MC. I fully understand what the canister does and that feds require it for polution, etc. But we remove the cat converter, and it is also required by feds.

First thing I did on my 12' was ditch the canister.
It would be the first thing I'd do on a 13' too. It will also help richen up the fuel mixture slightly too.

14, 111 miles. I might add that I took mine out on I-4 yesterday evening and let her romp a bit. It sure felt good to open that thing up. It really handles well in the curves.

I've had a couple of "cherries" on my left thigh. That's to be expected though in that I wear shorts 90% of my riding time. I also have a corbin seat and the heat comes out the lining of the gas door. That is exactly where the inside of my thigh is.
I know I know. I should be riding with FULL AND PROPER riding gear. I ain't gonna do it. So there. I'll just suffer the consequences and enjoy my spyder.

Does removing the Evap canister and the catalytic converter void the warranty on a new Spyder?

If it was a concern you could always slap it back on there before taking it in for repairs. It's all of about a 15min process.
My dealer has seen mine and honestly could care less. It was one less thing to move out of the way when doing my waterpump.
Even a crappy dealer would have an interesting time explaining how a charcoal canister, or lack of one, is the cause of any type of failure for a warranty claim....
With all the chatter about the problems associated with the canister stemming back to 2008, I am amazed that anyone leaves it on.

I'm sorry but I don't have an answer for you . :dontknow:

I posted this in another thread, but since is the same topic: Topper came home from the dealer today  . . . with new master cylinder, brake cable and charcoal canister, all wrapped up with the recall insulation, because all three had started melting :banghead:. In the past, I have always had a strong gas smell after ryding and had to let Topper cool off in the driveway, before parking in the garage :banghead:. I stopped and filled up near the dealership, being very cautious not to overfill . . . filled slowly and stopped the first time any gas spurted out the vents. I rode for an hour, pulled into the garage . . . and no gas smell! This is a first . . . my wife even noticed. I don't know if this is because I had overfilled in the past, or because the heat was cooking the canister. The canister is now insulated . . . so it has to be one or the other. I don't plan to overfill, to find out. Lets hear from folks who did have a gas smell, before the recall . . . do you still have a strong gas fume smell when your Spyder is hot and you shut it down, after the recall?

I've gotten the gas smell twice now. I notice it when I ride for a while, then stop for a few minutes then ride again I start smelling it.

Haven't got the recall done yet.
