Master Cylinder Cap

I just checked the master cylinder cap on my 2013 RT-S. I have 620 miles on my bike and live in the mild climate of the mountains in NC. The cap is melted on the front right side. Needless to say I am not happy. I will be taking my bike in Wednesday for the 600 mile servicing and demand that they place heat shields in this area and fix this issue. I will not have my bike sitting in the garage for months while the US government decides whether to place a recall on this bike. I am losing confidence in my ryde and this fellow spyder lovers takes alot out of the joy of the ryde for me.

You might want to contact FlamingoBabe and HotGlue; they've got a workable heat shield that they've installed on her bike... :thumbup:
I also think that SpyderPops has come up with one also...
They'll at least keep you on the road until BRP comes up with something...

Depending on the reviews of the 2014, I may trade in my 2013 later this year for a 2014. Getting my confidence back in the 2013 will be hard to do.

Anybody that have heat problems should wait and not to try to fix it yourself. If the heat is melting the cap and the brake fluid becomes too hot and produce spray mist. This mist will possibly catch fire. BRP are trying to fix this heat problem with heat shield. I hope it will work.

BRP worked with FlamingoBabe and HotGlue on their heatshield...
I'd contact them for information about it...
It would at least keep you on the road while waiting for BRP's ultimate response. :thumbup:

sitting and waiting isn't a good idea unless you don't intend on ryding. Having folks making or having heat shields made keeps you going. I think Lamont also looked into this. I know some shops are installing them. The heat shield will solve this problem and you will be ryding all along. When brp makes their version available you can change it (if it is better)...:thumbup:

Well I took the bike into the dealer today for the 600 mile servicing and to fix the recall issue with my melted master cylinder cap. The dealer was well aware of the recall issue which is good news. The dealer however won't touch the area around the master cylinder because of liability. He was expecting to hear something back from BRP about the fix to this recall situation in about 10 days. At that time he will order parts for the fix. I am estimating it will be 3-4 weeks until I can get my bike ready to ryde. This is one frustrated ryder especially this time of year in the mountains when the ryding is just about perfect. :banghead::banghead:

Think this idea out

With the 2013 heat problem I just thought of a quick and dirty fix. Wrap the master cylinder from one end to the other in one inch wide "exhaust heat wrap" since the spot is close to a header pipe.

I have been thinking on this overall problem and the only solution that I see is to improve the flow of overall air through the engine compartment and exhaust it out the rear around the back wheel.

Honda does or did a pretty good job, when I had my 1988 GW, of channeling the heat off of their radiators and exhaust system I think. Why does BRP have difficulty in getting rid of theirs?

Another idea would be to use air scoops such as used to ventilate the bilges of inboard boats to scoop up fresh air run it through the engine compartment and out through the back tire fender area.

Another idea would be to turn the cooling fan(s) on sooner and run longer exhausting heat buildup sooner instead of later.

Whatever solution works the best for the least cost would be a good fix for the now owners of 2013 models. Failure to fix the problem now is going have a big impact on sales except in Antarctica and I heard his sales are very limited.

Mine looked like this with 2000 mi on my RT-S....Dealer said to bring it in and they will fix it per BRP's plan, but they can't get the parts until Sept 21st or later :gaah: Dealer told me not to ride it...:duh:

guess being in Canada paid off .... All the parts are on order with my dealer... But... I was the first one to let them know about the recall ... I beat BRP Canada to the punch line... Thank goodness for websites like this ..

I also have a 2013 rt limited and after 7500 miles mine show no heat affects; however, I did cover the plastic part of the master cyc. With reflective heat wrap while I was under the all the plastic. Mine show no problems but it is a pour design.

The dealer is very aware I'm not a "when ever" kind a guy:banghead:. They placed a order for the required parts based on a bulletin they reviewed after my call to them. They felt it might take 3 days... we will see. I'll try to get some pictures of the repair... Still concerned this is a patch. I ride on.. it makes me smile...:2thumbs:loving the ride. Never thought I'd be riding a fire breathing dragon.

I have the bike back home now after the 600 mile servicing. Waiting now for the master cylinder cap fix. Hopefully this will be fixed in 3-4 weeks. The dealer said they would call me when the recall becomes official and after they receive the parts. As a FYI ......the service manager said that the dealer has stopped selling the 2013 RT's until this recall issue has been resolved.
