• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Just what Nancy's Toy said except that I would add you'll be better than fine. You're running the same gear set in the SE that we have in the SM. The only difference is the electric selonoids that do the clutching/shifting for you. Full synthetic oil is just fine.

A number of SE owners are and have been using Full Synthetic with great results.

Thanks Baja! I feel better now. Full Syn Ho!!

If you switch to full synthetic oil let us know what you think. The real benefit is long term protection but most notice a difference right away.

I'm not selling oil so I have no personal stake in this. Just curious.

How many miles should I wait till I can put synthetic oil? I have about 1500 miles... I had the oil changed at 600 miles and I know they put the blended oil in there, but I want to drain the oil and switch it to synthetic (Mobile 1 4T)... is it possible to just drain the oil from the crank case and reservior, leave the filter till the next oil change at 3000 miles, without causing any issues? also, I'm running low on oil since the 1st oil change... do I need to fill it with the blended stuff they put in, or can I add MOBILE 1 4T to just fill till the next oil change?

thanks!:dontknow:

You can use full synthetic any time [miles] And and you can add the Mobile 1 4t any time.
You can just drain the oil with out removeing the filter ,but why?
You'll still have some old oil left in the filter.:dontknow:

I'm guessing with only 900 miles on the oil filter that it would still be good... I'm just thinking the sooner I can get the synthetic oil in, the better off the bike will be...

The filter will still be good, but you'll still have 900 miles on the oil thats left in the filter. Why not start all the full syn. at zero miles?

Royal Purple Max Cycle- 10w40.

I second that. I now have over 35,000 miles on our '08 SE5 using Royal Purple 10W40 automotive oil. The tech at RP told me that the Max Cycle and the automotive oils were basically the same except for a few additional additives for the Max Cycle. He told me that the Max Cycle was formulated for air cooled engines. The auto formula would not cause any transmision problems and so far, has not. That's my experience with RP.

Well, my oil level is at the add mark... ill just add the mobile1 4t to get back at the safe level, then just use all synthetic oil at the next oil change... thanks for the info!

The Spyder does not know the difference in oils. A few miles until the next scheduled oil change should not make any difference in the longevity of the service you will get from your Spyder engine as related to oil. I personally would NEVER mix oil weights or synthetic with blend. And that's what you will do if you keep the filter. Just my input after many years of motorcycle riding.

Dudley- Agree with the not mixing to a certain degree , but the Spyder certainly knows that difference between oils as all engines do, There is a significant step up in quality between a regular oil or synthetic blend and say Mobil 1 4T. Shear properties etc. Just not even in the same ballpark.:chat:

Guess you missed my point. The Spyder, or any engine, does not "know" the oil that gets put in it. The different oils may make a difference in the long run, but not because the engine has any knowledge of the oil.

I guess I'm missing the point as well. The Spyder doesn't know anything about anything if you want to go with that logic.

It is the operator and wallet owner that knows the difference. Still, it is a generally understood phrase that the machine can 'Tell the difference' refering to changes in function, longevity, etc.

If properly applied, there is no practical reason not to mix different weight oils or even full synthetic with blended as long as you're using the same brand and application type. After all, that is exactly what Blended oils are all about.

There is an outside chance that mixing different brands might be less than optimal due to the possibility of different additives being used. I wouldn't recommend it because of the unknowns. But I suspect it would not be a big problem. You would simply end up with the lowest common denominator if the 2 oils were not of the same quality.

This is a bit hypothetical as there really isn't any practial reason to mix oils in the first place. Just a point of discussion.
