Low cost GPS install complete.

I finished the install of my iphone GPS setup. I purchased the TomTom GPS app for the iphone. Unlike the one supplied with the phone it works outside cell phone coverage areas. The TomTom iphone app stores the map data on the phone versus having to download it "on the fly". My iphone is the 32 gig 3gs model. I don't know if the TomTom app will work on other models.

This shows the Powerlet outlet on the left and a marine 3.5mm audio input on the right. They are connected to the GPS harness. The 12v is switched and as it is already fused via the GPS fuse in the frunks fuse box, I did not install an additional fuse......

I couldn't be happier with the setup. The TomTom app is excellent. I wish I had known about it last year before I purchased a Magellan GPS for the car.

Thanks to all for the ideas on the positioning of the 12v/audio receptacles and for the information on the GPS harness.

Total cost was ~$235.00 including shipping (I think the BRP GPS is $1200)

- GPS Harness (Allows iphone to talk via Spyders audio system)- $65
- RAM Mount (3 pieces) with iphone cradle - $40
- Bolt and spacer - $15 of which amost $10 was shipping!
- 3.5mm marine audio input socket - $15
- Powerlet socket and powerlet to cigarette socket adapter - $45
- iphone TomTom app - $50
- flexible wire conduit from Radio Shack - $5

I already had wire and Ty wraps so I didn't need to buy them. To connect the 3.5mm socket, which came with a 4 ft. cable with RCA plugs, I used a RCA to 3.5mm male adapter. I plugged the adapter and the male 3.5mm plug from the GPS harness into a female/female 3.5mm adapter. I already had those also. If you need any cables or adapters I suggest www.monoprice.com . I couldn't find the bolt and spacer to attach the RAM mount to the handlebar locally. The only place I could find that would send individual items was Bolt Depot and they charge close to $10 minimum shipping.

Originally I planned on installing a cigarette socket but it would not fit where I ended up placing the Powerlet socket.

If you already own a GPS with and audio out jack the TomTom app on the iphone is not required. You would need a different cradle for the GPS. Many universal cradles are available.

iPhones don't like water (I know, don't ask) so what happens when it rains? Are you going to install it in a waterproof case? That would be my main concern. Other than that it looks like a nice clean install. :2thumbs:

The cradle I used will not allow for a case. I will probably end up getting a larger universal cradle at some point. Until then I'll use cling wrap or stay out of the rain.

BTW...Thanks. I would have never have thought of that without seeing your post. The closest I could come to the RAM-B-253U was the 11mm hole RAM-B-252U.
