Love/Hate relationship with my GoPro HD

So it sounds like you like the Drift HD170? Any particular features you like over the GoPro?
Main thing would easy to use menu. The GoPro is fine if you don't want to change any settings.

I do like the idea of having a remote too. :doorag:

I used to have a GoPro. Couldn't stand the extreme fisheye lens.

I currently have a Contour HD 1080. Less of a wide angle so the view isn't so distorted. Runs off of bike power so no battery issues. I really like the large slide switch to start recording. No problems turning it on.

The mini-sd it uses cuts available storage in half, but I can still get a few hours of video before the card gets full.

This is a vid I shot last year:

I love the Contour 1080. I have it mounted on my helmet, and have a mount on the Spyder also, just to get a different view.

I saw some of the video with the X170 and it wasn't that great. Once you shoot HD everything else looks kinda junky to me but that's not to say it's junk, I just like HD videos and it's worth the extra money to me.

Yeah-- the HD ones sure do look better--- I just didn't want to spend the extra $$$ at the time -- and many times when people have sent me links to HD video they take a bit to download if you have a slow internet connection.

Good chance someday I'll get the HD version......

It's here and charging up now. I really like the looks of it so far.:2excited:

What kind of SDHC card are you going to use in it, size? speed?
I see they recommend at least a Class 4 card.

I am sure interested to see how you do with this as I was on the brink of buying a GoPro but sure like some of the Drift features better.

Quick question... Did adding the color screen help reduce the failed recordings on the GoPro? I would say about half the time I only get about 9 seconds of video or 4 ish photos.. Kind of frustrating but I thought it was just me failing to run it right. Even with the instructions in my hand to make sure i did it right...:opps::doorag:

Right now I'm looking at some of the wifi SD cards. I'm thinking either the 4 or 8 gig card. I think a 4 will do me just fine as you can easily dump the card to your laptop or ipad by wifi.

The other thing is I won't be taking a lot of video I don't want or need now that I have the remote. Many times I fill a card or drain the battery down to nothing because I don't get off the bike and turn the camera off. This will fix that.

Well it didn't help me this last time but I'm sure it was my fault. I'm going to set everything back to default if I can figure out how to do that. :D

http://helmetcameracentral.com/reviews/ Checked out this site . Great reviews on the cameras and some they recomend. I originally was looking at the Go Pro HD but now really interested in Stealth HD 170. I like the remote , standard 1/4"thread in bottom for mount,LCD screen Great find Lamont!

Just got my Drift HD170 and this is the first video. As you can see the lighting was bad and I couldn't get it to turn off right away with the remote. I'll have to play with that a bit :opps:

I haven't had any problems with the gopro menu. I guess b/c I start it (front button) and then press the top button. It automatically powers up in the video mode. That's really all I ever use.

Good luck with your new HD.

Lamont,

I have a question. Remember, it's only a question since I'm not familiar with your purchase.

When someone in a car is on their cell phone (I don't mean hands free) or they're texting that's a distraction. Isn't the HD170's remote a distraction when riding and adjusting? Just curious.

Although there is a lot to be said about getting a personal opinion on specific products I would rather research things on my own before I shell out the cash. But that's just me.

Besides, even getting a personal account on a products you risk it being biased toward the good side to justify them already paying the big bucks for the item and wanting to justify that decision by raving about the product. :D

So here's an excellent source to do your own homework reading what others have to say from people in the industry who test the products and hold no punches with their reviews. Very up-to-date information as well. Side by side, apples to apples comparisons are always the best IMHO.

Helmet Camera Central

Thanks,

I'll give that a read tonight.

Really? You push the button once for on and once for off, no more distracting than changing the radio station in your car. :dontknow:

I thought there was more to the remote. Like with the gopro yoou can shoot video or pics. and then the number of pics. per second. Like I said I'm not familar with the HD170. I just thought the remote had multiple functions.

I take it you set the HD170 before hand and then only turn on and off when riding? If that's the way it is, then there is no distraction.

All the remote does is start and stop the video/pictures. You have to make any other adjustments on the camera.

OK, now you post this Lamont! I'd been wanting the GoPro since Daytona when I saw yours ... finally got around to ordering one and it arrived yesterday! :roflblack: Perfect timing on my part as always!

If you get rid of your GoPro and "part it out" I'll take the LCD rear monitor and any extra batteries you might have! Let me know ...

The GoPro is still a great camera Bro, just make sure you're in the right mode when you go to use it. :lecturef_smilie: If I wasn't so mad about taking 9 sec of video when I thought I was taking 2 hours I would still be using my GoPro.

I have another guy I promised first dibs on my GoPro but if he drops out I'll let you know. I may still wind up keeping it, not sure yet. :dontknow:

This is just another test video. Today I'm going to get a pole and mount it on the tongue of my trailer about 8 to 10 feet up and see what kind of shot I can get with that. Should be pretty cool. :2thumbs:
