Looking for a loud pipe - any ideas?

BikeGuy, Loud horns... :2thumbs: I was once riding my GoldWing on a bridge in the left lane, and there was a kid to my ight in a P.O.S. cage fiddling with his radio and looking in his mirror...(Setting up to cut me off!) As soon as he twitched I laid on the air horns, (His window was open too!) He then bounced off the guardrail on the right!! Funny as all get-out, but I doubt that he ever made a lane change without making sure that the coast was clear! :D

Yes Bill you are judgmental, and you do have rights. You have the right to wear ear plugs, wear a helmet, stop smoking & the smoke won't get in your face. You also have the right to stay home where the activities of normal folks won't bother you.---all the best----Budro
It appears that your state motto "live free or die" does not apply to the rest of us in your view

I can't stand loud pipes including my own. However, the Leo Vince has saved my life several times already. The deer, squirrels, cats, dogs, and people either look up or start running the opposite direction. People jogging with headsets (very common) even turn to see what is coming well before I get there. I would love to have a quite ride again and not have to wear earplugs but I am convinced of the safety factor. If you putt around this may not be as much of an issue but I am an aggresive rider and have yet to have a close call in 20K miles. "Loud Pipes Save Lives"

...Maybe we're starting to let our hearts get a bit close to our hides in here... I haven't been around here for too long, but I think that when it starts to sound like someone is taking a personal hit for their opionions, then maybe folks need to take a step back and count to 10 before typing...

(IMHO!)

I live out in the country and in the mountains . . . I am on a hill.

When jerks go up the hill at 3:00 AM with their bikes under load -- the sound is loud enough to waken the soundest sleeper.

Rude is rude . . .

The "Live free or die" motto does not in any way imply that someone's freedoms should trample on someone else's freedoms. In this case the right to peace and quiet.

That would have been funny to see.

...and there in lies the problem that has these two points of view always at each other, and always will.

Your "right to peace and quiet" is not greater than my right to have my bike sound the way I want it to.

Loud Pipes

There has not been a single study that has shown that "loud pipes save lives." There has not been one bit of statistical evidence, either. If an idiot does not pay attention to you, no pipe or horn is going to change that. There are only two proven helps...defensive riding and loud clothing.

Scotty, I am not certain that I agree with you:mad: Several years ago (2004) I had installed a headlight modulator on my 2004 Harley Sportster. I had also installed an after market 2 into 1 muffler that made a little more noise. After I installed the modulator I decided to take it out for a test ride. While going down a road near my house, some guy pulled out of a sidestreet, to my left, and pulled into my lane squeezing me between his car and the curb:gaah:. I gunned the engine and he immediately pulled to his left thus leaving me some room to navigate. We stopped at the next opportunity to discuss what had happened. He said that he did not see me (remember I was testing my modulating headlight) and didn't know I was there until he heard the engine. Then he looked and saw that he was pinning me against the curb.
I venture to say that if I did not have a loud pipe I would have been much worse off. With an N of 1 it's not much of a statistic but it is contrary to what you claim. Loud pipes sure saved my life that day.
Also, keep in mind, that if the loud pipes work, the accident never happened and probably didn't get reported to the NTSB.:lecturef_smilie:

Recently we were asked to ride in the back of the pack...because our hindle was to loud..We were not offended ........ after all we safely had their six with our loud pipe. :gaah:

People use loud pipes NOT because it might save their life, If they were that worried they wouldn't ride bikes.
It,s a Macho thing. Makes them feel like an Quasi outlaw, the Marlon Brando Syndrome.
Goose the throttle and they think bystanders are saying wow look at that stud, When in reality there saying, what an ''A'' hole.
[No new rope please]

:clap::clap::clap::clap:lovely job Lamont, this is pure Jewel, sounds and looks even better than i ever wished for. Fantastic pipe. Now since you are The Spyder Guru i may ask you two more things if you don't mind.
1.- i would like to have a pipe on each side of my Spyder and i couldn't find anyone doing that piece which would allow such a set up but i know magician who is able to it for me. what differrence if any will it make , what should be i aware off ?

2.-:helpsmilie: i had my Spyder serviced/repaired recently and since is back i noticed that performance isn't as is used to be by far . when i twist a throtle let say at 60 - 70+ miles on 5th gear, revs go up so engine reacts immediately but acceleration starts couple of seconds later and is kinda slow, is not as crisp as used to be. I contacted mechanic and he guessed that might be software issue and will check it when serviced(i am in Ireland, closest dealer in UK). When on highway, 5th gear, 80+mph, twist throtle, revs up , no acceleration, crossed 7k rpm and orange engine control came up, lowered rpm below 7k, control light went away, twisted throtle again, revs went up no problem all the way, acceleration not so much but control light never came back on again. And all this process is happening even when i downshift to 4th or even 3rd. Any idea what it could be?:dontknow:

i also would like to thank you all guys for helping and sharing, thank you very much.:2thumbs:

I'm not a big fan of loud pipes and the older I get the less I like them. nojoke

That being said I can say without a doubt that there has been times that I have given my throttle a twist and stopped someone from cutting out in front of me or backing into me. It works the same as a horn, just a different sound and my hand is already on it. There may not be a statistic to prove it but I've proven it from hands on experience. :doorag:

Kewlmetal is very loud but this one may be louder.

Welcome to the land of the free and highly regulated

If you want a safe quiet comfortable place buy a coffin

My local LEOs like the sound of my Leo Vince with the baffle out they told me so

And btw yes both rude and inflammatory

:agree:you just couldn't say it better, it's nice to be nice and is good to be bad a little bit, we just respect each other and don't try over rule one another and we'll be all happy.;)

This summer I took the Hindle off and re-installed the stock muffler. My social conscience got to me. The Spyder runs much more civilly with the stock. It may have lost a little performance but it still has more than the operator can handle. ;) The back firing has gone away and I think I get a little more MPG (39 +/-). The stock unit is also big and ugly but so be it.

Do loud pipes save lives? It's tough to prove that something didn't happen. Lamont is right on in that you can find data to 'prove' any side of the argument that you wish to take. The figures don't lie but the liars do figure!

I ran a headlight modulator for many years and found that they do get noticed. Some people were pretty annoyed by that pulsing in the mirror. Some actually pulled over as I approached as if I was an emergency vehicle. I didn't like that. In heavy traffic I often would switch to low beam as a courtesy to the car in front of me. I might put one on the Spyder but first I have to buy a house and move and then install my hand brake kit.

21 years of stuff is a lot to pack and/or throw. Lots of priority on throwing this week!:helpsmilie:

Thanks Gargoyle! :2thumbs:
Personally I think that our bikes get noticed so much more than anything out on the road because they look like NOTHING ELSE out there... That, my fellow "Spyder-ers" is what makes these tripods safe!
Other bikes :doorag: just haven't decided if we're on a bike or not , and the cages just don't know what the heck it is that's approaching, so they're not sure if we pose a threat ... Thus; they pay more attention!
I don't think that sound ever really enters into the equation... (IMHO):D
