Looking for a loud pipe - any ideas?

I used to say that there were two things in the world that were never intended to hum...hotrods and motorcycles! When I started riding BMWs, I changed my mind. The quiet is certainly less tiring. Maybe too many years of working the line at the dragstrip, and driving front-engined dragsters, made me appreciate noise less. One thing is for sure, the noise damaged my hearing.

There has not been a single study that has shown that "loud pipes save lives." There has not been one bit of statistical evidence, either. If an idiot does not pay attention to you, no pipe or horn is going to change that. There are only two proven helps...defensive riding and loud clothing. Yes, loud clothing. Hi-vis clothing has shown a significant reduction in accidents. Clothing a part of the body that moves, like with a jacket or helmet, does best. If I am going to spend $500, my choice will be the clothes instead of the loud pipe.

Well said Scotty. I've heard that the person who hits a motorcyclist usually says that they didn't see them not that they didn't hear them.

I'm not a big fan of loud pipes and the older I get the less I like them. nojoke

That being said I can say without a doubt that there has been times that I have given my throttle a twist and stopped someone from cutting out in front of me or backing into me. It works the same as a horn, just a different sound and my hand is already on it. There may not be a statistic to prove it but I've proven it from hands on experience. :doorag:

Kewlmetal is very loud but this one may be louder.

...but twisting the loud handle can also propel you into a mess if it's happening in front of you... I do realize that everybody has their own viewpoint here, and I certainly have mine too! I would just rather buy more lights, a louder horn and a better helmet. :D
...and I've got my thumb on the horn button when things start looking interesting around me...
(IMHO)

The impression that loud pipes will save you is an old wives tale. Just do a bit of research on it on the web and you will find that nobody with any analysis done will concur that loud pipes save lives. If anything folks with loud pipes simply generate negative attitudes against motorycyle riders -- and perhaps make them a target!

I would rather be heard and be around here for my family, friends and kids then be DEAD because the old man in a hat or the little old lady that cant see over the steering wheel could see me or HEAR ME!!!:gaah: For the few seconds that you hear my exhaust or my OBNOXIOUS STEREO on my bike, DEAL with it:chill:. I know my wife and kids don't mind!

By the way, this exhaust has been on my wifes SE5 for over a year now and sounds great! http://www.esicycleproducts.com/exhaust.html

The saddest thing I see is folks dressed to the hilt in leathers, ostensibly to protect their body parts -- with no helmet or with one that is virtually zero protection.

Ultrastupid!

You tend to hold back, Bill... a bit shy, it appears. How do you really feel? :D

The loud pipe on both my bike and spyder has saved my butt many times. Maybe you cant see me, but you sure as heck can near me. A few quick raps on the throttle works way better than these aneamic horns that bikes and spyders come with. I guess this is like anything else on forums. You will always have some against and some for whatever the subject is.
Such is life on the internet

Well Bill if I felt like you do I would make sure I lived in a "helmet state". I believe I just read somewhere that beverly hills is clamping down on noisey bikes. ---btw I am old, but not judgmental---NH "live free or die"----Budro:chat:

Dave01, That's exactly what makes life out here interesting... not everybnody has to agree... A healthy debate with varying opinions and perspectives on all sides is how we all can learn from each other...:2thumbs: The best that we can do is try to give everybody a chance to say what they want without questioning their intelligence or breeding... :D
While I don't like loud pipes, I also don't like helmet laws... but you'd never see me climb on a bike (or an ATV!) without a helmet... You just can't legislate common sense...

If you're using the web to prove anything you'll find you can "prove" either point.

There is a large difference between being judgmental and have MY rights -- and those of the rest of the citizenry that likes quiet and no smoke in our faces -- having our rights trampled by inconsiderate folk . . .

Personally, I like quiet pipes. I wish my RT was even quieter than it is. I live on a highway that has quite a bit of bike traffic on it. I'm not terribly offended by loud pipes, I actually enjoy hearing some medium loud bikes go by the house. I've always thought that there was no prettier sound than a well tuned Harley idling with a medium loud pipe. But I am one mile from the city limits of our small town and when I can hear a bike leave town coming toward me, I believe that is too loud. I feel the same way about audio systems, car or bike, that I can hear that far away.

I know that many riders who have really loud pipes wear ear plugs or other ear protection when they ride. That's good but I think they should consider those around them who are not wearing ear plugs because they didn't expect to encounter audio levels that can damage hearing.

As far as safety, I think a good, loud horn is better than loud pipes. Had a friend with an old CB750 Honda who mounted an actual truck air horn on it. I have watched drivers look right at him and start to pull out in front of him. When he let loose with the air horn their heads swiveled like some of those owls that can turn their heads all the way around. They locked all the brakes and you could just hear them saying, "Where's that truck? All I saw was a little old motorcycle."
