Looking at Buying, what to ask/get done/include?

Hey gang, well the time is near. I looking at a 2018 Spyder RT LTD, 9799 miles, dealer is asking for 24,999, I researched Kelly Blue Book, there number is 23,225, I want to ask for BB value , oil change and coolant change just to be a little more comfortable before taking the vehicle, is there anything I should inquire about, ask or need to have done or checked with verification of these things being done once traded in from the previous owner.

I know I need to get another warranty, they use Riders Advantage, anyone know about them while I do the research as well? They offer Tire and wheel warranty as well, anybody have this? I'm thinking with a 10,000 deposit and finance the other they should bend a little, if not I can hop out but don't want to miss out either.

Thank for the time you took to read this and for any answers.

Bill.

Welcome to the Forum Billwash, as Little Blue hinted, the Welcome section isn't the best place to ask anything, so I've moved your first post into your first new thread here in the Spyder General Discussion section, and I've also sent you a PM - Just click on the flashing Red Notification up towards the top right of your screen to open up your inbox, and please tick the 'send read receipt' box too - that way I'll know you've received the message and I won't keep on hounding you about it! ;)

I'm not all that sure my Australian buying experiences will help you much, but with any luck you'll get some more local responses soon. Once again, Welcome!

My opinion is forget asking for coolant change. That can sit for 5 years or 28000 miles. So they won’t change that for free. Oil change heck ya ask. If it was done correctly, then it’s due at 9-10000. You can never change enough. It won’t hurt and if they are willing to throw it in go for it. Can’t hurt to ask. I’d rather have them check the brakes. It shouldn’t need it but might depending on how the previous owner used it. The rear tire needs changed if OEM. IF there is anything I’d ask for would be that. As for cost, get the final cost FIRST, WITHOUT asking for anything. Then ask for the $1000 off. Numbers have a funny way of being moved around at any dealer. Once you know the original final price and now the new final price with the dickering then you know if you actually got it lowered.

And welcome to the forum! Good luck.

Bill -- I assume you are buying the one at Hunter Power Sports. Beautiful machine. At that mileage and the lack of a rack, trailer hitch, etc leads me to believe it was a well-treated weekend ride. What are your riding plans?

WRT pre-delivery service, oil change including engine and HCM filters. New battery (Spyder electronics like fresh batteries). End-to-End Inspection with checkoff sheet. Demonstration of all controls in all modes, especially left-hand module, are functional (the left-hand module has very few wires -- it generates CANbus messages and therefore can be sensitive to non-repairable glitches). Demonstration of the opening, closing, locking and unlocking of all compartments. If it has air suspension, especially inspect and test that. TWO keys (walk away otherwise because something is fishy about history). Post pictures when it's yours.

BTW I don't think you will get much of a price break. Hunter doesn't seem to be that kind of dealer.

PS maybe you really want the 2017 with glowing underbody and pinstriping?:D

OP---You're paying WAY too much for that bike. For reference, I have a 2021 RT with 4500 miles and about $4000 worth of extras for less than that.

For that price I would look at Imotorsports (a sponsor on the home page). They have left over 2021 F3's and RT's from 15,999 (base F3) to 28,799 (RTL chrome).

With the OP being in SC, and Monk being in NC, I think some communication should be in order. Just say'n :)

For Imotorsports you need to call and ask first. They have long run out of 2021 base F3's and their website isn't updated to their current stock alot of times. This info was direct from Imotorsports sales when I inquired.

Wow, that price seems very high. I bought a brand new RT this past summer for $24,000 out the door, including the high IL sales tax, license and registration, etc. I'd shop around a bit more if I were you.

Asking price much too high. BB or less is where it should be. Get most current BB by going on the web. Get more than one BB price. (Kelly, NADA, etc.). Some dealers are playing fast and hard with "newbies." Don't get bit by that. It is a sellers market currently....but, there is a point where sanity should kick in.

I agree. The one you are looking at is overpriced. The one that Monk has is a real charm and very clean. I had the honor of helping with the sway bar installation and can testify that it is a very clean and well kept spyder. Being in SC would make for an easy drive up and ride it back deal.

Hi Bill,

While I haven't seen MONK'S 2021 RT, he has been nice enough to answer my questions on some of his extensive list of highly desirable and functional upgrades to his Spyder.

I purchased a 2021 RLT Dark last March for not too much more that the $24,999 that your dealer is asking for the used 2018 with nearly 10K miles. Have put 7000 trouble free miles on it this year. New Vredestein Qutracs going on soon.

The 2021, in my opinion, has some significant upgrades vs. the 2019 and earlier RT models. The floorboard and brake pedal arrangement, as well as the extra legroom for the driver are very nice upgrades vs the pre-2020 RT model. The removable trunk and newer saddle bag design on the 2020+ RTs are a nice upgrade as well.

The handling of the 2020+RT, again, in my opinion, is better than the older RTs as well...and MONK has the Baja Ron sway bar, which is a very nice upgrade for handling and makes a bike that handles pretty well stock even better. Note that I have a 2009 GS Spyder as well. I have added both the Baja Ron swaybar and a set of Fox shocks to the front of the 2009 GS (and Vredestein Quatrac 5 tires as well)..and the stock 2021RTL handles almost as well as the upgraded 2009 GS with vastly better comfort, smoothness, and wind protection.

I haven't added Ron's swaybar to the RTL, but that is on the short list of upgrades for my RTL.

I would check out MONK's used bike as it is the most current model Spyder with lots of very nice upgrades. Sounds like he is fairly close geographically as well.

Good luck with your Spyder purchases and adventures. I still have a big KTM single dirt bike and a couple of older Ducati Multistradas, but as I get older (66 years young) and riding with my wife, I really enjoy the Spyders.
