• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Locks, alarms and lo~jack

Hi all,
The dealership wanted to stick me with $900 of lojack,
I passed.
My Question is how do my fellow :spyder2: riders lock, alarm or even lojack there bikes?:dontknow:
and what suggestion they have.

I have a Low-Jack that was negotiated as a freebee because it was already installed on Spydee.

Whenever she is ryden without the L.J. fob on her, they give us an automated call. Very creepy but reassuring. You can either ignore the call if you went out without the fob, or respond to the call if Spyder should be locked up for the night.

If you find your Spyder missing, call the local PD with the VIN, they get in touch with L.J. and they locate and disable the byke.

Haven't had to use it, but glad its there.

There are many options out there. Just have to pick the one that you are comfortable with.

On rare occasions I'll lock the handle bars with the key.
Other than that that's it, If some bad guy wants my Spyder he'll get it no matter what alarm i have. I do have insurance which will cover the bike and added accessories.

Lojac and Scorpio for me. And the Spyder lives inside the garage with the security system on.....

I just lock the bars and remove the key. One more step than what Lamonster and his IPS converts do. :D

as i am finding out lojack is only covered by a small area.
and only turned on after a full police report is filed.
given the guys enough time to find the locjack and shut it off. there are only so many places it will be hidden on a bike as to a car.

Lojack becomes active once you call them for a missing vehicle. You do not have to wait for a report. I had it on my Mustang and it worked well.

Who is your insurance company?

It seems to me that most people simply ignore alarms, whether they are on bikes or cars. I have literally heard them squeal until the battery ran down and nobody paid any attention. My RT stays inside my shop at night but I almost never lock the shop. At night on the road I usually lock the trunk and side bags and take the key with me to the motel room. At rest stops I never lock anything and seldom even take the key out of the ignition. I've never even tried the handlebar lock to see if it works. Born, raised, worked and live in small towns - what can I say?

When I am away from bike for a long time parked somewhere its a thick cable lock on the rear wheel or the front so if they want it they have to pick it up to move it.

Born and raised in the small town of Brooklyn NY, Moved 35 years ago to a very small town in NJ and :agree:with you.

IMHO, I don't think an alarm is necessary...if someone wants your bike, they'll lift it..and if they know what they are doing, they'll be stripping it down to look for low jack anyway...there's only so much you can do...the bike only weights 700 lbs and a few guys can lift it quite easily...

As far as alarms for attention, yeah, I hear car alarms go off and don't even look anymore...'

I usually just lock the handlebars and go...

Locking your motorcycle

On a trip to Europe my friend's dash console came apart. We found a shop that could repair it---we thought. We had to "hot wire" it to keep going. The shop owner told us that fixing the console, which he couldn't do, and being able to lock our bikes would not keep them safe from being stolen. That the big Harleys we were driving were the most desireable bikes in all of Europe. He explained that when a motorcycle is stolen the thieves come in a large van and 4 or 5 of them just lift the bike into the van, locks and chains, and it never will be seen again. He told us that the only way to secure a motorcycle when on the street during the night is to chain it to a lamp post, telephone pole, high tension eletrical post or as a last result chain the the two motorcycles together. He added that our Corbra Chains were the good ones the thieves can't cut except by them using a cutting torch. He told us to be aware of fence posts and sign posts as they can be pulled out of the ground very easily. He added another very good way to protect your bike over night is to leave it a public parking garage close to their office where someone would be on duty all night and take a taxi to our hotel. During our 30 day trip we did all of the things recommended. No problems! Curious? I was on my Harley sidecar and my friend was on his solo HD. We covered more that 3,000 miles and had a ball.
