• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. Locked key in trunk

Questions

New member
I have a problem. I locked my key in the trunk of my 2011 RSS. Two locksmiths could not open (couldn't pick the lock). HELP!!

Call your dealer; he'll know how to get into it!
Then; get yourself an Ilco X-270 key blank, and have it cut to match your chipped key. Hide it behind some bodywork where you can get to it during times such as these... :D

There is only one dealership here in Manitoba, unfortunately. (Well, they have several locations). They have a reputation for being greedy and uncooperative. I did contact them and they said 'no, sorry, we can't help you'.

That's what I did and so far (knock on wood) I have not had to use my "spare" key...

U should have recieved 2 keys

When you purchased your Spyder. If you got it used maybe only one.

I have 3 keys, got 2 when purchased and a couple months later I recieved a key in the mail from the dealer that was lost. It did not work and I went back to the dealer and had the Spyder re-programmed for all 3 keys. I almost always carry a spare with me.

Sorry! I am of no help to get frunk open with out the key.

Running down the left side of the steering column are some wires and a wire that looks like the brake cable on a bicycle. If you give that a gentle tug it should open the frunk. A little B&E for you to practice. Hope this helps.

Just sayin'............

:agree:....Otter is sending you in the right direction, however I just tried it and no amount of tugging got the FRUNK to release ....HOWEVER .....This did work ...by pushing that cable up at the very end where it is in the holding clip ...you can free it and then get some needle nose pliers on the cable itself and pull that and it will open. An angled pair will be helpful...........Mike

Some good ideas on how to get the trunk open given. Bob suggestion on getting a spare unchipped key is a good one. I have that. What I want ot point out is you should always have a minumum of 2 working keys. It sounds like you don't. If you lose your 1 and only working key, it could cost you $800 to $1,000 to get it fixed. Getting another key programmed from the dealer for $80 is a lot cheaper.

Explain how an ILCO blank cut like your original keys works. I thought there was something electronic in the originals. Will the ILCO key work the ignition or is it just to open locks? I understand that ILCO makes most key blanks for key shops and hardwares... my point is, what does having this spare for your wallet buy you? TIA (I am newbie... please don't beat me!) wg

PS: I was hesitant to carry my 2nd OEM key because if damaged it would cost quite a bit to replace.

An Ilco key cut like your chipped keys will only open locks, you cannot use it to start the Spyder. That's what the chip in your OEM key does, talks to the Spyder electronics so you can start/run the roadster. On RTs, sorry, don't know about other models, the Ilco key will allow you to lock/unlock the Spyder rear trunk and saddlebags as well as open the frunk and unlock the seat to gas up. You must however do a little beveling of the key to do the frunk and seat so you can push the key down far enough to engage the mechanism. My beveled key looks like the one in the picture.

Many thanks! I didn't think of the ILCO spare and will likely lock my 2nd key somewhere when traveling and keep the ILCO in my wallet as suggested. I have an RT and must push down to unlock seat/frunk and understand the "beveling" issue. Again many thanks! wg

I keep a "Dummy" key in a handy spot, and a spare "chipper" stored in the Frunk.

My original second key is stored safely at home!

An unchipped key cannot start your Spyder. What it can do is unlock the trunk/s if you accidently lock your key in it. Or you can lock a spare chipped key away in one of the locked compartments in clean dry conditions.

What I have done is duct taped an unchipped key in an accessable, hidden location on my Spyder. In one of the locked compartments I have a full set of spare keys and a spare alarm fob. This spare key is a clone that can start the bike. Only so far can keys be cloned from 2013 and earlier models. This leaves me with one of the original keys at home in the almost impossible event I lose both of the other keys.

I did not use the X270 I used the ZD24RDP-S1 available online. No grinding.
