Lifting at the rear

Hi,

I have a 2008 GS. I seem to have read that it should not be lifted ( floor jack ) at the rear shock mount.

So, where is the best location to lift the rear only with a floor jack?

I need to get it up about 12" to put some goodies on it.

PS) And please do not ask me to do a SEARCH. I have yet to find a forum where this feature works for me.

PPS) I do have a lift in my garage & have seen Doc Humphrey's photos but I would like to lift the Spyder rather soon. Probably later with making something like Doc did.

PPPS) Anyone know the weight on the rear tire with no one on the Spyder?

OK, I tried lifting it where the link showed. That simply did not work as it was just too 'tippy' for me. That link seems to use a jack with a very large pad fitted.

My floor jack is a typical garage-variety type and it has a pad that is only 5" in diameter and that is not a sufficient area to ( IMO ) keep the Spyder from falling off of the floor jack.

Also ( once again ), anyone know the weight on the rear tire with no one on the Spyder?

Use jack stands on the front to stabilize the Spyder . . . or build something out of wood that will support the weight . . .

I have had the front up on jackstands before ( swaybar install ). Once I have it on jackstands at the front, then how does one go about only lifting the rear without lifting the front also?

There must be someplace to lift at the rear only.

PS) I plan to build a simple wooden support for the rear tire when I actually get it up in the air. :sour:

do you have a set of car ramps? back up on one. use your floorjack with a chunk of 2 by 6 or 1 by 6 as a pad under the swingarm just forward of the rear tire.

Floorjacks

I use floor jacks to stabilize front and/or rear depending on where I am working. I put the rears under the passenger foot peg mounts.

No car ramps. I'll give the 2 x 6 a try; might not be enough clearance, we'll see.

I drive the front tires up on a pair of car ramps then put a motorcycle jack under the back. After it is high enough I put another ramp under it. Super solid.

.....As long as you place a piece of wood that will be WIDER than the metal TABS that the shock BOLT goes through you will fine ........I always lift the rear this way..........The problem arose because some people were putting the jack under the shock EYE and lifting it ........that is a NO NO ...............Mike :bbq:

I ended up using a 3" diameter piece of ABS plumbing pipe. It is about 6 - 6 1/2" long. I placed it directly under the 'Y' at the rear frame. Worked great.

BRP INSTRUCTIONS AND PARTS INFO

This is out of the RT Service manual.

...Rick, if you feel this is a good idea - it has been my experience ( and others here ) BRP is notorious for making mistakes in their recommendations and with listing of Parts........If you do it this way, and the bolt bends, you will have to remove the entire shock so you can cut the bolt to get it out....or take it to your dealer and ask them to fix it under warranty :roflblack::roflblack::roflblack::roflblack:.....good luck with that ...................Mike :bbq:

Perplexing...

I gave up and got the ATV/motorcylce lift. There is a difference if you need it up without weight (hanging) or just up where you can block under the wheel.

this allows you to move the whole unit around, lower onto A stands, work comfortably and best investment if you do your own work...
