Learn From My Stupidity

I just installed a 665 and when I turn the Spyder key to on the GPS powers up. When I turn off the Spyder the accessory ckt powers down 10 seconds later and then the GPS asks if I want to continue on battery power. If I do nothing it shuts down in 30 seconds. My 550 operated the same way until it lost its mind. Is this how yours operates? Where do you have your GPS power hooked up to?

I have the same problem. Wired the 665 cable in place of the factory 660 cable. Sometimes it cycles power every 10-15 seconds. Other times it works fine. I did try putting the 660 back in and the same thing happened. The power cycles are very regular. It acts like a time delay relay. Anyone know what's up with this?

PS. For those that don't know, a 665 will not work with the Cable that Garmin ships with the 660. But the accessory cable that you can purchase works on both the 665 and the 660.

Are you connecting the power by wiring it to the two jumper connectors under your seat? Please explain how you have it wired for power. Check here to see how I connected mine.

When I tried to use the jumper connectors under the seat, I had the same problem you're describing. I thought I would be getting continuous power, but instead It would operate on battery power until it went dead.

I'm stupid as well when it comes to the Garmin...didn't lose one..but the sucker died on me with a low power warning...Somebody please educate me...When you have the 660 installed don't you have a continous power supply when the Spyder is running...or even while it's shut off if the power cable is connected?..I charged it with my computer usb portand I'm surmissing that this is what kept it running for about 3 hours, then I got a low power warning...How come?....What's the purpose of the power cable being connected if it doesn't power the D*** thing?
How do you have the power hooked up? See my other response to this thread.

Knarfoh...Thanks for the info on your install...looks straightforward...I'm gonna have to get under the dash and figure out how the dealer installed it but I do know one thing...it's not right. I'm losing faith in the service dept at the dealership...They couldn't install the xenon HID hit right either...screwed up a perfectly running machine and finally refused to install...not I find that they didn't install the gps right...and they change me $78 an hour for thier incompetency to the tune of over $300...They finally got my machine back running again but it cost me over $500 to get them to install the HID and it's still not installed...I'm not a happy camper.

My power wiring is the factory connection for the 660 Harness. (I removed the 660 harness because it does not support XM radio with the 665). A plug is added to the Garmin cable. Then the Garmin cable plugs into a cable that is attached to the radio module. This connection is on the right just in front of the right side storage compartment. Using the factory harness allows you to connect the audio output of the GPS into the audio system of the Spyder.

The symptoms are as follows: With the GPS in it's mount, turn on key. As the Spyder powers up, the GPS powers up as well. When the Spyder starts, the GPS power cycles off and back on. The problem is that sometimes the power to the GPS will continue to cycle off and on at regular intervals of about 10-15 seconds.

Sounds like a bad connection. Dirty, corroded, loose connector, loose pin, loose wire, improperly crimped pin, bent pin... There are a lot of possibilities that have to be investigated and eliminated. There is no easy way to pin these kind of things down.

But Randy, lyfe is so short & there's just SO Much to Learn from you, is there time?

Yes, I'm be'n a Smart*ss:opps: just couldn't help it my friend. You know, Teddy had me pick up the Ram Mount thats still holding his GPS to the top dash of his Red Sled:rolleyes: from Bass Pro Shops & if I remember correctly, it was less than $30:clap:& you know all too well, that its held up well through the twisties & everything else that we've thrown at it for over 25,000 miles of smiles now

Simple solution, just get Holly the RT-Limited that she wants, it comes with the GPS already attached :roflblack::thumbup: & you'd be her Hero for Lyfe:yes::2thumbs::yes:

I will take it apart and re-check my connections. But the very regular timing of this makes me think it is something else - like a relay cycling. However I have not noticed anything else being effected by this as yet.

No GPS here, and it sure shows!!

Since I'm still too..."Frugal" to spend money on not getting lost, we still rely on the sense of direction that the Good Lord gave me... :opps:
Yesterday while ryding North on Rte 97 along the Delaware River, we came upon a car fire. The firemen told us to take this little road (routee 114) around it, take the first left, and it'd drop us right back out onto 97 above the conflagration...
So far; so good!
But there were about 10 motorcycles right behind me who had the same great idea for the day's ride...
So I start up 114 and MISS THE TURN!! :gaah: It actualy looked like a cross between a cowpath and a driveway anyway... :opps: No problem: just keep on this road, take a couple of lefts and maybe a right and we should be going in the right direction....
BUT EVERYBODY FOLLOWED ME! :opps: So here I am; leading this Parade of bikes through every back road that's everybody's worst nightmare... :yikes: After about a half-hour... We ended up right back at the fire!:opps::roflblack::roflblack:
At this point the other bikes decided to un-elect me as the navigator and they went on their merry ways wondering what the heck I was trying to do to all of them!
Maybe now the Missus will buy me a Limited to keep me from getting beat up by ticked-off lost bikers!

Regarding battery not charging while riding, I have to occasionally clean the contacts on the back of the GPS and the mount. Otherwise I also occasionally I find it has not been charging.

So, Bob, obviously those other lost bikers didn't know you. No one who knows you would ever follow you! :roflblack: (Just kidding.)

You sure got that right!:roflblack:
Actually the Missus and I are more focused than on the journey, rather than the destination... :2thumbs:
