Kumho Rear for 2011 RT Roadster ms5

Standard size is 225/50/15 Kumba seems the only available tire in that size. Altimax is available at 215/60/15. I do not know how far the speedometer is off. The Altimax will increase my speed by over 3mph at 60 mph. So my question is, "how much is my speedometer off at 60 mph.?"

Second question: "Is there a problem with me using the 205/55/15 Altimax which is about .75 inches narrower tire but about the same outside diameter ?"

Ok, to be more clear: Does anyone know how much the speedo on the 2011 is off from the real speed? And, will a tire that is .75 inches more narrow than stock make much of a difference? I am considering buying one of the two General Altimax sizes. Or just go with the original stock sized Kumho.

Go with the 215/60/15. It will put your speedometer within 1 mph....Brand is a whole different can of worms, but I had the General Altimas 43 on a 2010 RT and there was an awesome improvement from the crappy OEM tire that was on it. FYI, if ya take a second to type in anything tire size/brand related into the search tab in the upper right, there are 16 pages to read about tires...

Ha! Yes, I've read those pages, most of them twice. Thanks but I still was not sure about that fact you shared. Now I am. One mph difference. Yes I've read that that tire corrects the inaccuracy in the speedo. Never sure which year they were talking about. Your 2010 and mine should be the same. So thanks for that.

I still wonder if that 3/4 inch smaller width on the 205/55 makes much of a difference. Honestly I'm thinking of staying closer to the original gearing if you know what I mean.

I have put 5 Kumhos on our machines and tomorrow will try another General on a friends bike that she just wore out her original Kenda (2012 RT). We have them as our latest trial on an RT and F3T. Yes like Mazo says, the taller General puts you within 1 mph of the actual GPS determined speed at 60-70 mph. I like that.


I can not tell any difference in handling on mostly dry roads here out west between the Kumho and the General....well maybe the General is a little grabbier in the twisties, but I do know that I can get about 25,000 miles wear out of the Kumhos for how and where I ride. I hope that the Generals get close to that as well. Both are reasonable to buy and they both roll well with minimal weights added. My last General is rolling okay without weights, but I need to see if the centramatic balancer smooths it out a little more. Just my two cents..

Thanks AeroPilot. I ordered Kumho Ecsta AST KU25 225/50R15 91H BSW. $92.79 shipped free with free road hazard from Tires-Easy. Here is my reasoning: I have 5 two wheelers and 3 cars/trucks. Every one of them have a speedometer error built in to some degree. Not one is spot on correct. I'm used to cheating on my speed so if I corrected the Spyder with the slightly larger diameter I'm afraid it would eventually bite me. With a speeding ticket. Crazy reasoning but it's mine. Also I liked the description of the KU25.

I think it is the circumferece of the tire that affects the speedo reading, not the width.

The narrower tread width of the "205" might just reduce the tendency for the rear to hydroplane... :dontknow:

That is true. It was suggested to purchase the 215/55 which is a larger circumference than stock. That would correct speedometer error. Which is good. However I chose to ignore a fine suggestion and purchased the stock size. I was considering (but did not do it) purchasing the very fine General tire in a 205/55 which is a bit narrower than stock but the same circumstance.

The problem is not having my stock size available in the tires I want. I just put Vredesteins on the front and like them. They are not available for the rear. The case is closed! Kumho Ecsta KU 25 OEM sized tire on the way.
