• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Desert Spyder

Trying to get an early out of Durango at 0530 on Saturday and my Spyder crapped out on Poop Out Hill on Hwy 160, 10 mi west of Durango. My pressure plate gave out. I was towing a trailer in "trailer mode", downshifted a gear and it gave out. No error messages, RPM went through the roof when it gave. At first I thought it was the shifting arm that gave out which I had trouble with a month ago. So I took off the plastic on the left side, PITA, and reset the arm. Didn't help. In all my years on this forum I don't recall this happening, the pressure plate, to anybody but obviously it has to have.

Got towed to Fun Center (thank you AAA) where all the Spyders in the parking lot resembled an ER waiting room. They had FIVE Spyder mechanics on duty to insure everybody got out of town OK. Talked with Doc and Paul from Florida C2C, SRA-SRA-SRA and many others. About 2 hrs later the verdict came in that it was the pp. Parts on order but may not arrive till Tuesday at the earliest, maybe Wed with customs, even with air freight. So the bike may not be repaired until Friday. I called AAA again to help out on a rental car which was available at the Durango airport. Lyle at Fun Ctr arranged for transportation to the airport. Transferred what I could into the little car, Nissan Vespar, which is not much bigger than the Spyder LOL.

My wife and I were ryding with another couple from San Diego. They had come to Durango via a very hard ryde through Yuma and Phoenix, AZ. Spyder temp 120. It was very hard on his wife so she rode with us to Barstow in the air conditioned car. This was a God send for her I am sure. Even in times of discouragement the ryde to Durango and back to Barstow was a lesson in God's blessings, adventure and fellowship. An expensive one to be sure but still the same. About a dozen or more Spyders passed me while I was stranded on the side. Most were ryding independently and none pulled over, or slowed down, save two...who I knew: my friend Danny, Spyderflyer, from Barstow who was on his way to Utah, and Marcianne and hubby from SRA-San Francisco Bay chapter from Carson City.

I asked Lyle, the owner of Fun Center, how many Spyders they worked on during the week? About 170 with an astonished look, which included oil changes, etc. How many were worked on in the Tech Tent at the fairgrounds I am not certain. There were about 500 Spyders at the event from what I hear. If these numbers are good then about HALF of the bikes at the event were touched by the techs for one reason or another. Hmm.

I do not know why the PP gave out. I praise God it happened where it did and not out in the middle of the hot desert with my wife. I praise God I was ryding with my SRA friends Dave MacLeod and wife Deb. They stayed by us, including an extra night on the road, till we arrived home. This is perhaps THE #1 reason for joining a club, like Spyder Ryder of America (SRA) or another Spyder club. Many owners simply are not groupies which is understandable but still a shame. It was kind of discouraging to see so many bykes pass me, from an owners standpoint, while I was broke down. Granted, another bike was with me and other ryders simply did not know what was going on but still... Perhaps a universal sign of distress can be created save from flames coming out. Too many flames in the area anyway. Durango may not have fireworks on July 4th I hear.

Now I must make a 2nd trip to Durango this week to return the car and pick up the bike. I just pray the temps come down because this trip will be done solo I'm sure. Not much choice there I'm afraid.

Sorry about your troubles. When I saw you you were all ready loaded on the flatbed or I would have stopped. Not much I could do other than feel bad for you. Hate to see any Spyder on a tow truck. :banghead:

I'm 3600+ miles into this trip so far with no issues. :doorag:
 
I'll stick my neck out on this one,
But i don't think a Spyder has a Torque Converter. :dontknow:

The SE actually has TWO clutches....the hydraulically controlled multiplate clutch and a "Centrifugal clutch". It's NOT called a torque converter, but acts like one. ;)

One of those cases where a rose is called other than a rose but its still a rose I guess. This is what the guy at Fun Center told me what was wrong. He showed me where it was located: on the right side. Best I can offer. I'm sure someone might have a cut away view but I would like to know HOW it happened. Did I do something wrong? Things happened pretty fast when it occurred. I think I was in 4th going to 3, not sure of the RPMs.

Hard to say why it would have happened....any signs of overheating? The guys at Fun Center should have an explanation from looking at the failed parts.
 
I carry a red warning triangle...something that was mandatory when I was stationed overseas in Germany..If you have a vehicle breakdown or need assistance you place it to the rear of your vehicle which will hopefully let folks you need assistance...In Germany, you go by somebody broke down it's gonna cost you big time. Another thing we were required to have onboard was a first aid kit...both of which I carry....

Another thing we were required to have onboard was a first aid kit...both of which I carry....

I was looking for something along that line on Amazon. I also saw collapsible traffic cones with LED's. But will it fit in the frunk or rear truck? Dunno. I read online where a universal sign of distress for motorcyclists was putting the helmet on the ground near the rear tire. But in CO, UT, and several other states there are no helmet laws.

Then I was thinking how about some orange or yellow florescent caution type ribbon, tie a loop on one end then put a strip 12inches or so on the handlebar grips or passenger grips. That wouldn't take much room or $. Thank you for your idea.

Which part are the weights? The little roller like objects? Re: flashers, my partner behind me had his flashers on which can mean just about anything really. But the triangle/cone/flags are a little more aggressive and might attract more attention. You're right though. Question: can the part be replaced with one say from a 2012 or does it have to be a 2010? I don't know if the engine has changed at all in that time. BTW I do have the 2010 SE5 model. Could be the reason.

If you have the stock clutch there's a good chance you have some of the old weights in the clutch. They can be updated with all years as all SE's have roller bearings in all the weights now.
 
Shortly after I bought my SE, the dealer did a roller change for me (no charge). BRP put a bulletin out on this repair.

Maybe somebody should a thread on what be be Univeral. The Helmet on the ground is kind of standard for two wheelers, but I try to stop if I see any bikes off the road. I have no idea on how to use my quill pen to start a thread.

I remember, "back in the day", an open hood and/or trunk symbolized a sign of distress for drivers. People were more considerate and trusting back then than now. But the biking world is a more different community, even among outlaws.

As Spyder Ryder's, we are in an even more unique community. Most of the owners are middle age or above, middle income or above, employed or above (retired), and I would not be surprised that for most of us, this is our first bike. And about 1/4 of the owners are women.

Perhaps we should initiate a universal distress sign. This is the largest forum, perhaps in the world, dunno, re the Spyder. Maybe, we can do a proactive move here and brainstorm an idea. It can't be that hard. Can it?

I usually carry small bright orange cones with me, but forgot them this trip. As Brian said, my flashers were on until the tow truck came. Along this subject, both Brian and I had our owners manual which turned out to be as asset. The driver said he never towed a Spyder before and we were able to show him the section in the manual. Additionally, only inches remained on the flatbed after the RT and trailer were loaded.
