Hows this for the 6000 miles service. Went to dealer about two weeks ago for service and also had a vss code showing up. They did the gear shift update and parking brake update. The update did not fix the code problem. They did the rest of the valve check ,oil change ext. and since it was running way late in the afternoon and I had to get going I had them give me what buds readout and I have the shop manual so I told them to call brp and I would try to solve it also at home. I should tell you I am about 90 miles from the dealer. The tech had me come and listen to the motor when he started it because it did not sound right to him. I didn't hear anything different so he buttoned it up and away I went. I get home and there is oil all over. They pinched the oring on the oil filter housing. So I fixed that and got on to the trouble shooting. Turnde out a tail lite bulb was working but throwing a 3 goofy vss codes. Go figure. Fix that and call and tell them that I fixed it and could they send me an oring to replace the bad one. They send me an oil filter instead:dontknow:. So I go dig up an ring at the hardware store and save the filter for the next change. I clean off all the oil and go out for a ride and dinner last weekend. Its running okay but not great. I think Its just from sitting all winter.
Get home and more oil leaking again, not the oil filter housing but the front valve cover. So I fix that yesterday and as long as I have the valve cover off I put in new plugs. I fire it up today for a ride and after i ride about 3 miles it starts backfiring thru the front throttle body. It is sort of spitting like the timing is to far advanced. I check my exhaust gaskets thinking I'm sucking air. No the are good an while I was fast Idleing it the front header pipe starts glowing cherry red for about the first six or 8 inches of the pipe. Well this ain't good. I shut it off, load it up and run it up to the dealer.:gaah: They will look at it monday. It is throwing no codes and it wasn't getting hot. I thinking the valve cover gasket was over heated and that would explain that leak.
Any ideas? I'm thinking a burned valve from something done on the valve check. They said it needed no shimming. This was their first valve check. Could they have messed something up. In their favor they are a big kow and yammi dealer also snowmobiles and water craft and 4 wheelers in those brands and also seadoo skidoo. I am stummped and not real happy.
Can Lamonster or anybody else have any ideas?:dontknow::dontknow:

Wow....what a cluster #%&*! You/we tend to trust the dealer to do a good job on a routine service like this - I would be a very unhappy camper if my favorite toy came home like this after a service. You did as much work as the dealer........getting it right!!

Seems like we are hearing more and more of Spyders going in for "service" running great and coming out with problems. Can't blame BRP for that. Kinda scares me of trusting any dealer for doing work on our Spyder.

Which dealership did you buy the Spyder from? Which dealership did you have do the service?

I bought my Spyder from Engelhart in Madison and had them service it. I had the valves adjusted during my trip to Alaska last summer.

I live in Blue Grass, Iowa and ride to Dubuque occasionally. :doorag:

I agree that really SUX bro sorry to hear about that.Boy i know that all products have probs no matter what u buy but its sure seems like alot more people have probs with the spyder than those of us that dont sure wish the amount of dissatisfied owners would drop. Ive had next to no probs with my SE5 knock on my plastic table lol.you would think they would train the mechanics that work on these things a bit better Hope everything works out for ya bro keep us posted........Michael :spyder2:

Bummer man - I was the first 6,000 mile checkup at my dealer too - but they did a perfect job.

They should have changed the plugs at 6,000 - so you really shouldn't have had to once you got it home - also make sure to use paste if you change them yourself.

I can't believe they messed up the o-ring and then you found the valve cover leaking? Wow - they really need to go through it all again. If they missed simple things like those I would be concerned about what they did once inside the Rotax!

The percentage of Spyders with problems is much smaller than what it appears by reading forums. I'll bet that if you picked any product, motorcycle, car, etc. and found a forum on it, reading through the forums would give you a sense that the product is highly troublesome. I was reading the Apple computer forum, hoping to find insight on how to best recover information from my Time Capsule (backup hard drive), and the forum posts were almost all about problems (or perceived problems). Some of the posts commented that the product or software in question seemed to be abandoned by Apple or shouldn't have been released yet (same as what some people say on here about the Spyder, the SE5, etc.). However I am sure Apple has hundreds of thousands or millions of satisfied customers out there. Many people look to forums specifically to get help or to complain about issues. Thats why it can appear that the product is troublesome.

update

Got my spyder back on Tuesday. It was a leaking intake boot on the throttle body. When they did the valve check it wasn't seated all the way down when they tightened the clamp. I should of found that myself. I must be getting old. They did a leakdown test ,redid the valve check and checked it all over. Everything is fine now. They had the head tech do everything this time. No oil leaks this time .

This was not the fault of the bike but the service department. All's well that ends well.

Everytime I take my in for service I always ask which mechanics is in I try real hard to get the same one each time. I haven't had any problems, but blessing everytime it goes in seems to be better coming on. Wow sorry to hear about your case. I also try to talk to my mechanic each time it comes out to ask what he has done, this builds my confidence up not only hearing from the manager but also the mechanic as well. Hope you get better service next time if you go back?

Glad all is working well...so much better to hear happy endings as opposed to the stories where nobody can figure out what is wrong with the bike!
