It was my birthday today and I doubt I'll have another quite like it. Left Evanston Wy this morning and it was just below freezing but other wise quite fine. The start of our 3rd day. Destination was Sidney, Nebraska. My wife Karen and I got to within 10 miles of Sidney, when the clouds went from threatening to wild.
Torential rain, fierce wind and hail the size of peas. What the hail lacked in size it made up for in volume. Sections of the highway were covered except where the 2 tire tracks were and in places, completely covered. Our visors fogged over and I had to raise mine to see enough to try and get off the interstate. Those pea size suckers hurt. Was able to pull off under an overpass along with 3 other cars. A motor home going in the other direction did too. Waited almost half an hour and tried to go. Went less than a mile and it started again and fortunately a rest stop appeared but no shelter. Waited some more and started again to only go a short distance and construction had the highway down to 1 lane and then another stretch of road covered completely with hail. This time the Spyder started to slide and was able to get it under control. I drove it between the cones and stopped. Just a little past this was an exit for Sidney and got off the interstate. One more really bad section of bridge covered in hail which I crept over. Finally found the Best Western and have been drying clothes since. More rain and wind forecast for tomorrow. Would have liked to get to Springfield on the 27th but might just make some shorter days.
Of all my road trips I've never had a day like this.
MurphyBrown mentioned in her post that the Spyders handled the wind well but not so much the riders. We have had quite a bit of wind too and also find our necks don't handle being snapped sideways very well. Spyder is pretty stable.
See you all at Spyderfest.
