It was a Hail of a day on the way to Spyderfest

It was my birthday today and I doubt I'll have another quite like it. Left Evanston Wy this morning and it was just below freezing but other wise quite fine. The start of our 3rd day. Destination was Sidney, Nebraska. My wife Karen and I got to within 10 miles of Sidney, when the clouds went from threatening to wild.
Torential rain, fierce wind and hail the size of peas. What the hail lacked in size it made up for in volume. Sections of the highway were covered except where the 2 tire tracks were and in places, completely covered. Our visors fogged over and I had to raise mine to see enough to try and get off the interstate. Those pea size suckers hurt. Was able to pull off under an overpass along with 3 other cars. A motor home going in the other direction did too. Waited almost half an hour and tried to go. Went less than a mile and it started again and fortunately a rest stop appeared but no shelter. Waited some more and started again to only go a short distance and construction had the highway down to 1 lane and then another stretch of road covered completely with hail. This time the Spyder started to slide and was able to get it under control. I drove it between the cones and stopped. Just a little past this was an exit for Sidney and got off the interstate. One more really bad section of bridge covered in hail which I crept over. Finally found the Best Western and have been drying clothes since. More rain and wind forecast for tomorrow. Would have liked to get to Springfield on the 27th but might just make some shorter days.
Of all my road trips I've never had a day like this.
MurphyBrown mentioned in her post that the Spyders handled the wind well but not so much the riders. We have had quite a bit of wind too and also find our necks don't handle being snapped sideways very well. Spyder is pretty stable.
See you all at Spyderfest.

most inclement weather I encountered on a motorycycle.. was going to Key West a few years ago... when we got to Ft Meyers a hurricane moving up the Atlantic... the closer we got to Miami the more wind we encountered... by the time we got to Miami the wind was blowing 60MPH and the rain was torrential .... we tried to get a room, but because lots of folks ran from the hurricane in So Florida all the hotels were full.. so we had to make the ride from Miami to Marathon.. it took us 4 -1/2 hours to ride from Miami to Marathon .. the wind was coming from the east, it was kinda scary when the wind went from 60 MPH to 0 mph because of buildings or trees then back to 60 MPH in just a few seconds... man I was glad when we pulled into the hotel in Marathon..

Glad to hear you made it through your ordeal. Good advice above. Ride safe, the party will still be there when you arrive.

Thanks for the birthday wishes. We cranked the heat in our room, and I mean cranked, last night and got everything dry. This morning it was blowing, cold, misting and foggy and neither of us were enthusiastic to leave but did and have to say it really wasn't a bad day. Kept it a short day of only 328 miles, so if all goes well we can make it to Springfield tomorrow.
The only lingering disappointment from yesterday is that our beautiful Ultimate seat got pretty wet. Hope it dries with no ill effects.

OSM, definitely know what you mean with heavy crosswinds when on 2 wheels. Have had that experience but not with 60 mph winds. I would have parked somewhere.

Everyone stay safe. Hope to see some other Spyder Ryder's on the road tomorrow on the way in.

Cheers, Gary

Hit weather like that on my Goldwing in Idaho a few years back and the wife and I had to find cover. Not fun riding that way. Hope you and Karyl arrived at Spyderfest safe. I wanted to go but was still in PT from knee replacement, sounds like I lucked out this year.
