Is there enough room for the passenger with Utopia Backrest???

We got our Utopia Backrest today. I have not installed it yet. My wife sat on the backseat and we kinda placed the backrest on the seat were you will cut the hole. There did not seem to be enough room for her. She is an average size woman. Is there a worry here or does the backrest go forward enough not to bother the passenger..I know there are a lot of people that own this backrest, have read all of the posts and everyone loves there's. Can we hear from the passengers how they like them...Thanks everyone for your help and advice...

I have the same concerns. Looking forward to hear from users of the Utopia Backrest.

I've never had a problem with any of my passengers.

Remember, the only thing that comes up through the hole in the seat is a small shaft. The backrest fits forward of the shaft, not behind. The backrest also folds down forward to make it easier for the passenger to get on and off.

Of course, there are always exceptions to the size issue.

As always, my free advice comes with a double your money back guarantee.

passenger room

Just installed the backrest on my 2011 RT-S. The wife tried it out and there was plenty of room. She did like the tilt feature and also said that it made her more comfortable when riding without have to hold on to the grips all the time. I on the other hand when sitting behind her found that my stomach just touched the backrest. Not a tight fit but an indication that perhaps I should try to loose a few inches around the middle. I really don't think you will have any problems.

Have had the Utopia backrest installed for nearly two years and have had no issues with passenger comfort. My wife actually likes it better than without the backrest. She is also of medium build. I hope I said that with the proper correctness. :opps:

Utopia Backrest

I have had the backrest for awhile and rode several different passengers with no complaints. The fold down feature makes it easy to get on and off. And most importantly my first mate likes it.

Tight fit on the GS

I have a 2008 GS with the Kontour seat and Utopia Backrest. Also have the BRP backrest for the passenger. My wife is a small size woman, but finds the space too tight by the Utopia backrest. She said it is right against her lady parts so not comfortable to ride very far. That is with the rear backrest all the way back. Probably not any problem with the RT, but posted this in case any sport model riders were reading. The Utopia backrest is great for the rider.

(Watching this thread with extreme interest... My Missus is "blessed with curves" , so fitment has been a concern...) nojoke

My wife is a slightly larger average build and is tall. She said it was to tight in the cold with all the extra gear and ok in the summer but she was still up against it. Her friend who is a bigger rode with me and it did not work. I did not want to squish her so I just leaned foreward and by the time we were done I was about to cramp up. We now have the Corbin and their backrest is smaller but does sit in about the same area so she has more leg room. Her friend was shorter and about 225 if that helps. No way I will list my wifes weight even if she weighed 90lbs. The dog house is to cold this time of year, lol.

For those of you are interested and haven't ordered yet. The quick-out option may be what you want. I ordered the quick-out option just for this reason. Most passengers fit fine, but...

When my husband rides with me, his belly rubs the back rest. So we just pop it off and store it in the side bag. When I and my daughter ride, we are just fine with the back rest on.

Just another option to consider. I love the backrest. I was having lower back pain in just a few minutes into the ride. Now, I can ride all day with no pain. And if I have my hubby along, I just use him as a backrest! :D

to funny Bob, I am in the same boat My wife and I are both french...we like to eat...but were not overly big people well maybe I am :roflblack::roflblack: a little to much:popcorn: on movie nights. Maybe its a good thing she does not know about this forum or I would be sleeping in the garage. Anyway I need a backrest as well and this is proving to be a good thread.

I would not use the "placing the backrest where you will cut the hole" reference point because the backrest can tilt to your desired (and her comfort) position. My wife and I were concerned about this as well. But once we installed it and played with the backrest position, we found a position that was comfortable for both of us.

As the passenger, it is comfortable

We have the Utopia backrest on or RT. I am "short and round", but am comfortable behind my hubby (Yol Bolsun). I actually find the back rest adds a bit of security to the feel of the ride. I think our longest day "2 up" with the back rest was about 8 hours and I was fine. That being said, I still prefer to ride on Miss Daisy with her custom Ultimate seat and rider backrest.

We DO have to be careful...

I'm not French... But I love French Fries!! :2thumbs:

Recently installed the Utopia on my 2011 RT (or, more accurately, it was expertly installed for me by draboo). My wife is 5' 4" and a size 12, 155 lbs (statistics reported with permission ). I was concerned that she would find it too tight, but she's just fine with it. And, as has been mentioned, it also gives her a bit more feeling of security.

We don't have the "easy-out" model, just the standard one that flips forward. It has made getting on and off the bike slightly less graceful than before. ;) But it's definitely an improvement over the "old" backrest method (which was my wife putting two fists up against my lower back, lol!)

She also likes the pouch on the back of the Utopia, for holding her Kleenex. :D

The Utopia seemed to me to be a better (i.e. cheaper) alternative than a Corbin or a Russell, since the backrest was the main thing I wanted. Both wife and I are happy with the stock seat - hasn't been uncomfortable for us.

Thanks

Well we read everyones post and decided to install. Our thinking was if it bothered Nancy we would not use it. But I do a Ky to Ca to DC to Ky with the Run For The Wall. It is a bunch of mostly older Vets To show support for our Military and I would use it on that run. That being said, I installed it and Nancy got on the bike and it turned out to be great for both her and I. She said to tell everyone that if your are small to medium build it would work fine. If you are of a large build she could see were there would be a problem..Both of us thank all of you for your input and advice....

Utopia

We are 2 rather well fed folks that are perfectly happy with the Utopia. As was stated, my wife likes the secure feeling as well. Funny thing, it seems to be a tighter fit with the winter gear on, must be due to contraction when cold.

interesting thread...I am thinking about getting the Utopia....my wife is..er..more of the woman than I married! so I'm not sure she will fit with it on.....another wait and see item!!:banghead:

Can't sit still

I have the Utopia backrest on my 2011 RT. My wife says it is not a problem for her. What bothers her is that I feel that I am pushing against her and keep moving forward and then backward. We talked about tonight and she dosen't mind if I sit back and stay there. So I now know it is not a problem for me to sit back and use the backrest. My back thanks her!!!
