Had an interesting ride yesterday. I was up in the mountains and decided to take the road from Ruidoso to Cloudcroft NM. This is about a 30 mile twisty road with great scenery.
After a few miles I reached a point where the road was being worked on. Brand new chip seal. The bike was sliding all over the place. Finally figured out to have the left and rear tire in the "groove" and it slipped a little less. I think I would have gone down on a two wheeler.

For those of you that don't know what chipseal is...they spray the road with as thick oil and then cover it with pea sized gravel. The gravel then "sticks" to the oil and they sweep off the excess pea gravel. Except they hadn't gotten to the sweeping part yet. There was a two inch deep section of pea gravel where the rear tire was supposed to be. This went on for ten miles.

As I said, interesting ride.

Craniac, I love that area. I use to ride all through the forest service roads in Ruidoso, Sierra Blanca, Lincoln and Cloudcroft. Of course that was in the early to mid '70s. I really do want to get out there again. My ex was from Ruidoso.

By the way, the DOT does the same thing here. They just did it on a road that I frequent. Problem is, they don't sweep here. They just let the traffic and rain take care of the left overs.

Hey what a title for a new song. "My Ex Was From Ruidoso" I will get right on it. When I had my band we did a lot of recording in Clovis NM at the Norman Petty Studio.
The title sounds like something Marty Robbins would have sung. Oh well, that was then and this is now.

Have ridden there also. Did you know the real Smoky the Bear is buried in a small town North of Riodoso I think it is Alto or Capitan. I saw him before he died in the Washington DC Zoo when there on a layover many years ago. They also have a small Smoky the Bear museum there.

They use it in PA as well. It's a nightmare but it sure saves money! Never mind that someone might die...

From the article:
"We can chip seal one mile of municipal roadway, 24 feet in width, for about $60,000," he said. "To put an inch-and-a-half of new blacktop on that same segment, would be about $360,000."

Does that sound way more expensive than it should be to anyone else? I could see $60k a mile for a brand new road through a forest or something but $360,000 for a mile of new blacktop?

If any one knows something about road construction, please enlighten me.

I ran across some road grading in SD in 2003. They were dumping #3 stone on the road surface then using a large grader to smooth the surface. I was on a Kawasaki Concour at the time. I stayed upright but the bike lost the oil filler cap. Pucker factor to say the least.

Yes, the real Smokey Bear (no "the") is buried in Capitan NM. He was found just a few miles north of Capitan. There is a great ride from Roswell to Capitan on Pine Lodge Road, about 80 miles.
Lincoln NM is not too far from Capitan. It is where Billy the Kid shot two deputies in his escape.

The ride from Roswell to Clovis is not as fun. I don't think there is a single turn the whole 110 miles.

chip seal

I think its tar not oil. They then expect traffic to compact the chips into the tar. No matter oil or tar not pleasant to drive on.:banghead::banghead::banghead:

I would be doing a very thorough drive belt inspection ASAP after riding on any of that!!!!

I would think that it would not be practical in snow country. Plows have a tendency to scrape off what is not completely embedded in the oil or liquid asphalt base. Not all of the roadway gets ridden over :dontknow:.

When I lived in central/northern Ontario, they used this technique with tar but instead of smaller chip they used 3/4 +/-. We had lots of snow and very cold and it stood up to snow plowing. The larger grade of rock was hell on tires though.
