Installing 12v adapter in frunk

I have a 2012 RSS. I want to install a 12v adapter in the frunk. I was told that I have to remove the frunk to accomplish this. Is this true? Secondly what type of adapter do you recommend. And last any advice on how to remove frunk if need be. Thanks in advance. [emoji2]

Here's what you do..!!

remove the left center panel and the left forward panel. You will see the bottom of the fuse box. There will be a black boot with two wires to hook to the outlet. It is fused so only works with the key on. You will also see the rear of the frunk. Drill through install the outlet hook up the wires and slip the boot over to seal it from the wet... your good to go..:2thumbs:

What brand of outlet did you install

I installed the BRP one in my frounk on my old RS. I did not find it very useful. it is out of the way hard to get to when you might need it etc.. I would talk to some of these guys that might have installed them on there dash ot somewhere like that so they are more user friendly places.

12V

Thanks chupaca. Is there a way to install it so it works when key is not on?

run your wires directly back to the +/- under the seat...
when installind one in the frunk... make sure you have a 'quick disconnect' about 8 inches behind the adapter. this will allow you or a technician to unplug it if the frunk ever needs to come off...
i installed 2 of these on either side of my dash, and i don't know how i lived without them...

I installed a Walmart one in my frunk simply for a phone charger. I direct wired mine to the battery so it works whenever. I was told that could cause it to throw a code but I've worked on enough rides to know that direct wiring something especially that small won't hurt it

Sorry SPYD3R,but do not use the posts under seat,if you loosen the "-" post its very hard to get it tight again.if you want to have always hot got to the Battery or as I did take off the frunk(on the RS/RSS it is easy to remove) and there is a always hot wire connection tyed to a center post behind frunk.

i have 4 12V adapters on my '09 RS.... all connect directly to the 'post' under the seat... i know what you are talking about, but it's just not that big a concern... these have been in for over 2 years now with no problems... however, i just remembered that the newer SPYD3Rs have the batter up front... i would guess that would make things even easier for such an installation....

Ok. I have successfully installed a brp 12v adapter. I didn't remove the frunk. I followed chupaca's advice and removed the two side panels on the left (thumb shifter)side of the spyder. There was a wire boot just like he said tie wrapped to the shock. I used a 1 1/18 how saw bit to cut a hole in the frunk on the same side as the wire boot was. I fished the wires thru and completed the installation. I want to thank everyone who gave me advice on this. The only question I have left is how to set up fuse box to use 12v adapter when key in not in on position? Can someone help me out on this last issue?

GO TO YOUR LOCAL AUTO PARTS STORE, K-MART, WALMART and buy and IN-LINE fuse link.... about $0.79, and mount it as close to the battery as possible.... i would recommend NOT going into the bikes fuse box.... i hear you'll start throwing codes... help me out people... is this a fact... i never experienced any codes when going direct to the battery....

Thanks SPYD3R. I appreciate your help. I installed the factory adaptor from BRP since the local dealer is only a few blocks away from my house. I used the prewired harness that was zip tied to the shock. I just found out that this harness is for switched (key on) only. I also heard that there should be another harness pre wired for the un switched (key off) use. I need to verify this. Can anyone verify this for me???

I have a 12v outlet in the frunk which is useless when I have the luggage in the frunk. Better off with an outlet on the dash, or a second one in the rear cargo. JMHO.

Yes there is but you may not be able to get to it without removing frunk as it is in the center.(tyed to post behind center of frunk) on the RS/RSS the frunk comes off easy(4screws on top,2 on bottom and 2 plugs) I had my frunk off for something else so I used it for my Angle eye rings, you may be able to touch the wire from the side but there is not any slack as it comes off a harness.
