Increasing loudness of F3-T

I went to ride my F3-T Sunday and it got so loud that I quit riding since my ears were ringing even with earplugs. I tape a decibel meter to my bike and just going up and down the street, never exceeding 25 mph, it got up to 102 decibels. I only have 250 miles on it, but a lot of stop and go driving.

I took it to my dealer today and expressed concern that the longer I own it the louder it gets, plus it seemed strange to me that it takes at least 20 minutes before it gets really loud. I was told by a mechanic that loudness was normal and was the result of "packing" breaking down.

Is this normal?

Thanks for answers.

LOUDNESS

The mechanic ( :roflblack: ) claims this is NORMAL ...... your spyder is a bit over one year old. I'll tell what isn't NORMAL ...the mechanic who told you this ..... DEMAND a new muffler ..... I think you are getting jerked around .... and need to find another shop ...... good luck .... Mike

I'm with Mike re the mechanic on this?! Does your F3-T still have the OE Muffler on it?? One of the Akropovic sporty options?? Or something else?? :dontknow:

The 'packing breaking down' thing is fairly common on glass packed after market sports &/or performance mufflers, & is even ocasionally found on some of the optional sporty pipes you can get,, but it's only rarely something you find on standard OE mufflers?! :lecturef_smilie:

Btw, once the 'glass packing in a muffler breaks down, it doesn't miraculously 'grow back' or recover after you shut the engine down.....:sour: once it's broken down or been blown out the open end of the pipe, it simply doesn't work to keep things quiet anymore at all - so once a 'glass packed muffler gets loud due to the packing breaking down, it stays loud from then on until the muffler has been stripped and re-packed.... :lecturef_smilie:

So there's gotta be something else doing this, and that mechanic really needs to learn how to BS people in a believable way if he ever wants anyone to believe the line he's spinning!

Was it “loud” when you got it to the dealer? If so I would have asked him to turn in another F3 so he could compare the sound. With only 250 miles on your Spyder something sounds wrong.

Try this

As Ann said... pair it up with other same models and see, on your own or at the dealer so they can see for themselves...

Another card on the pile for having a dealer run another F3 for a comparison test.

The "its normal" argument usually is a cop out when given as an explanation to a problem--by the mechanic.

Let us know what happens. Hoping you get the issue solved quickly.

That is my plan. My salesman is out right now and I only want to do a comparison when it is not raining. With NW Oregon weather it will be a while.
