My XP is running in safe mode at the moment, today when I turned on my computer it would not boot into regular windows mode here is what happen. The computer started to boot up the windows first screen came up and the blue bars were moving left to right but after a about 20 sec I heard a click that sounded like the HD shut down and then nothing happened then a more seconds could hear the HD starting up and it re-booted and got the screen to boot in safe modes or last know best mode I tried to re-boot in regular mode a few times but each time while the blue bars where moving I heard the same click like HD shut down then after a few seconds could hear HD start to run up again and boot again with safe screen. Computer will boot in safe mode with no problem but of course only have network and nothing else and you know how slow safe mode runs, it does sound like the HD shut down each time I try to boot up regular mode then re-boot in safe and it runs just fine this way I have no idea what it might be except that maybe the HD is going but if that is true then why does it re-boot and runs in safe mode no problem. Also my bigger problem is I have files and programs on the HD in windows that I could not replace so I am hoping I can fix it but not sure how to and hopping to safe my files in the process.

There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

The fact that you can boot in safe mode suggests that the HD is OK. You may have been hit by some malware. Can you backup to a restore point in safe mode? I've never tried it myself but I thing that's what I would try next. You might have a restore point that is only a few days old that you'd be willing to revert to. Some really sophisticated malware might still remain.
Next options: Copy your data to an ext drive. Rebuild you system. Scan your data with malware/virus detection programs. Restore your data to the HD.
Last option: Spend some money at a good repair place.

Wife's computer started acting in a similar manner 2 weeks ago. The more I tried to reboot, the worse it got. The HD was on it's last leg and repetitive tries to reboot, made the situation worse. Repair said that had I not tried so many times I may have been able to save the drive enough to retrieve the files. ALL the pictures we took on our trip around the country in 2009 are GONE! Thankfully the ones on SpyderLovers albums can be copied to her computer. So are many hundreds of other pictures that Jennifer took hours untold to scan and save! Got the computer fixed and now have an external HD for back-up storage.
My suggestion about yours: take it to a good computer guru and see if you can recover information from the HD before it totally crashes.
