Hey everyone. I am new - great site. I just got my brand new
2008 spyder last week and I cant ride until spring! I dont even have my motorcycle license yet! :sour:.

So it sits in my garage and i drink beer and mess around with it. I added the sport rack and backrest so far. Couple of other little touches but nothin big.

What kind of break in does the Rotax need? Can I start it in my garage during the winter and not hurt the break in?

You just have to take it easy for the first 600 miles keep the revs down a bit and you will be fine. You can turn it on and run it as much as you want as far as I know. It shouldn't hurt it. The Rotax is a pretty husky bugger.

Running an internal combustion engine in a garage, even with the door open is an invitation to carbon monoxide poisoning. Don't do it! :yikes:

And running the Rotax at idle and with a few blips of the throttle thrown in is no way to break in the engine. All you're going to do is accumulate moisture in the oil cause you won't get the engine hot enough long enough to get it out of there. Moisture inside is death to an engine. If you do run it long enough to get it hot then there's a good chance that the EMS will be hauling your pink, but lifeless, body out of the garage (see point one above).

There's a break in protocol in the owners manual. Most here followed that. I recommend it.

I personally believe in full throttle and to the red line up to about 60 or 70mph, followed by engine braking down thru the gears and then full throttle back to red line......(you'll never get past 3rd gear on the Spyder) Repeat for about 20 miles and then change the oil and filters.

This kind of break-in is not for inexperienced riders, is not recommended by BRP, is best done on a closed track so that you don't have to deal with traffic and if your dealer finds out could void your warranty. You have been warned :sour:

:congrats:welcome Hi brutus and may i start off saying i'am jealous saw your bike it's the one i want. Now that you have the time and need a motorcycle license, check with your dmv and see if you can use the spyder for your road test. or i highly recommend taking the msf coarse they generally provide everything you need and they give you the road test right there. I rode it for 10 miles and kept it under 5k, didn't go too hard on the brakes so as not to glaze the rotors, etc., but when I expressed nervousness about the break-in requirements they were nonchalant.

Easy on the brakes for the first 186mi
During first 625mi.....
Avoid full throttle acceleration.
Avoid prolonged riding, you know like hundreds of miles on the freeway at one speed.
If the cooling fan stays on pull over and let the engine cool or speed up and let the air cool the engine.

Good lord, such restrictions!

I had to ride my Spyder 75 miles on the highway to get it home the first time it was on the road...I rode it slowly, at around 55 mph in 4th gear for some time, then put it in 5th and rode faster...never took it above 70mph...

I also never took the tach over 7000 rpm...this is well below redline...

As far as braking pressure, it feels like a car, so to me, I brake like it's a car...

Break-in periods, IMHO, are defined so that you don't destroy the darn thing...unless you redline the bike and slam the brakes at every intersection, I don't really know how much damage you can do to a Rotax engine...they're supposed to be top-notch...I remember a BMW mechanic told me when I had 70k on my BMW that it was now broken in!! That's some break-in period. The bike will take more than 600 miles to break-in...I'd say it takes thousands...however, I can't see any problem with riding the bike like a bike...motorcycle engines are generally made to take a beating...

I'd be more concerned about all the electronics...seems like most people who have problems with the bike are having electrical issues, not engine problems...no way to break these in though...
