• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

I'm in a wheelchair, thinking about a spyder

I am not sure if anyone on here is like this or has one I can checkout, I got in a motorcycle accident 9/27/07 got smashed up and ended up in a wheelchair with a T8 spinal cord injury, which is just below chest level. I set my 00 zx12rr with landing gear, it fun as hell when I have it up but when it is down it is a bit dicey.

I need something I can use and ride on the street( I had over 12k for miles on in 07 before I got hurt) I sat on a spyder a few weeks ago and call all over MN and found a 08 auto for $17.4 out the door.

My question is has anyone on here setup a bike for this, I looked at the handbrake mod section which I can do with the help of my riding buddies, I am also going to the motorcycle show in Mpls this weekend and was wondering if there is anything else I should he looking for as far a mod stuff for spyders.

Thanks for any help.

welcome

It is so great to hear that the Spyder may be the answer to keeping people that still want to ride in the saddle. Short of the hand brake it is the perfect vehicle for what you describe. Especially the SE5.

With so many people working on the hand brake mod we will get that worked out (if BRP doesn't see the light and do it themselves).

Great to have you on the boards. I'm sure everyone will do what we can to help you get up and running.

You will love the Spyder. It isn't a 2 wheeler but it's just as much fun.

SethO welcome Your going to love the :spyder: Sorry to hear your news but proud you still have the desire to enjoy life.

I was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 3/06 with 8 to12 months life expectancy. Still here going on 3 years. 1 year into this I bought a M109R and after 1 year of ownership I had to sell after experiencing a seizure while riding! No damaged done managed to shut it down and hold it upright. Once sold I bought a Silver SE5 and haven't looked back.

Keep your drive and desire to live life to the fullest. :2thumbs:

if you send me an PM I will hook you up one of So. Cal. Spyder Ryders that is riding a spyder and has made the mods to his bike.

welcome and :congrats:

I'm currently doing exactly what you are wanting to do. I'm a para also (T11/T12 total dislocation) and have been in a wheelchair for 35 years now. Riding bikes had been one of my passions prior to my injury and was something I had written off as one of those things I would never do again. "Then along came a spyder . . ." and everything changed. I first started looking at the Spyder last summer and finally made the move two weeks ago. I'm now the proud owner of an '09 Red SE5. It's still sitting at the dealers waiting for fog lights, 12v adapter, NMN 4" risers, and Corbin front and rear saddles with two backrests. I think I have a pretty good handle on what you might need to set your bike up. Here's my list:

1. Brake lever mounted on the handlebar. I'm going with the modification first posted on this site by NEXUS and then expanded on by Trikester. It's a hydraulic system that is very well explained on the mod. Biggest mod need by you and I, also should be fairly simple and DEPENDABLE.
2. Footboards. Spyderladie posted a mod made for her bike by a friend of hers using Harley footboards. Very neat looking and very much better sitting situation for a para - will also make it easier to anchor your feet so they won't come off the board.
3. Either Russell Daylong or Corbin saddle. With the problems of pressure points experienced by people in our situation, you need a flatter, more sculpted seating area. I will be using the Corbin saddle with an Airhawk (roho) cushion. I've sat on a roho cushion for 29 years with good results. DEFINITLY look at this option.
4. NMN risers for the handlebar. This, along with the floorboards, will allow you a more verticle (and comfortable) sitting position which will cover a multitude of needs: comfort, endurance, better weight distribution (for pressure points), etc.
These are the basic riding needs - from this point I'm already designing a carrier so I can travel with a Quickie manual chair. I'll let you know when I get it worked out. From this point I'll start looking at the SERIOUS modifications: paint job, GPS navigation, communication/music, HID lighting, cruise control, and the list goes on and on and on . . .
Welcome to the Spyderlovers family and don't be afraid to ask - these guys have ALL the answers and are glad to share and help. God bless and we'll be talkin.

Thanks for the info, I can setup the floorboards no problem, If I could get more of a walk thru link to that hydro brake setup that would be great, I only got about 20 miles on my bike with the landing gear last year, fell 2 twice slow speed cause the damn thing broke, several problems, will never order from lee beaver again, bullsh1t support and all the part were make like crap. Anyway I was told by a dealership in alexandria,mn that a guy in Park Rapids has one setup for someone in a wheelchair but I haven't had him answer his phone yet.

So is there anyone who has one setup and has some miles on it on here?

Thanks again for the help
