I talked with BRP for a rebate for 2013 to 2014

here is their answer to my e mail today

i have no problem with company's coming out with new products, it happens with everything. look at apple they come out with a new phone every year, so the people with the funds to buy the newer ones do and others don't. i went from my 2012 BMW to the spyder because at 62 and health problems getting worse and wanting to keep riding as long as i can, so i bought something safer for me to ride and not have to worry about one day putting my feet down and dropping a bike. i am retired and spent good money for a bike that i felt would help me with continuing to ride, not one that i have to worry about burns, BRP knew this problem existed but kept selling bikes when they knew that they fixed the problems on the new models and kept selling the bikes when i ordered mine in June that is what pissed me off.

As mentioned earlier, the kits for the recall are on their way to the dealer and should arrive ASAP if they aren't already there.

As for the heat issue you're having, the only step I can suggest at this time are to check with your dealer; there is definitely a possibility that your Spyder is running hot and there are steps that you or your dealer can take to try and reduce the heat affecting your right foot. When you bring in your vehicle for the recall, have them download and send us a BUDS report to mesure the Spyder's telemetry. From there we'll be able to see if there is anything we can do software-wise to reduce the heat level.

There is no incentive plan for users who wish to upgrade from a '13 to a '14 at this time.

Thank you,

Companies are always innovating and improving products. I don't feel they have any obligation to compensate buyers who are upset that the latest improvements weren't included in their purchases.

I am not a lawyer, nor do I play one on TV, but my belief is that there is a difference between "latest improvements" and DESIGN FLAWS! nojoke

I have no dog in the hunt since I did not trade our '12's for the 13 model. I had a hunch they would upgrade the machines but I figured it would be 2015, never believing they could get such massive changes off the ground in time to market in 2014.

They do have an obligation to make them safe, thus the shielding but I don't feel they have an obligation just to make them more comfortable.

Except the current recall heat shields do not fix the boiling gas problem, just the melting master cylinder and charcoal canister. (we hope). Its NOT just a comfort issue. I can deal with the heat from the radiator on my right foot. So far, no problem dealing with heat at the seat but the fumes from the boiling gas are NOT SAFE and DO NOT MEET EPA REQUIREMENTS. Oh and to be clear, I do not want BRP to buy my 2013 back or give me some special deal to buy a 2014. I want them to fix the heat issues on the 2013. Insulation and air flow WILL FIX THIS and I would greatly prefer not to have to resort to the aftermarket to get there.

One thing to remember is that if you never go far or ride in 90+ temps you don't have these heat issues. I still ride mine to work every day and when I get home it's not hot, I have no seat heat issues, I have no boiling gas, no gas fumes...

But when I ride long distances (back to back tanks of gas on the interstate) I get bright red thighs that feel like sunburn for days, I smell extremely strong gas odor for 4+ hours when I park it in the garage (EPA?) and I'll have sizzling gas when filling up (only on those 100F days tho).

Oh, oh! I wasn't having any gas fumes problems. Thought I had a good machine in that respect. I was only doing local rides. A couple of weeks ago, I did 1,000 mile trip. When I got home, my wife asked what the heck that stink was coming from the bike. Yup, the Interstate cruising lathered my RT up pretty good, evidentially. :(

Heat Issues

I can't address the heat issues on the '13 RT's, but for those of us that own ST's, maybe the solution would be for BRP to provide us with the new '14 panels that increase airflow free of charge!

Absolutely...

However I think they do have an obligation to make them last longer than the warranty. The kind of heat under the tupperware is the kind the damages rubber hoses and destroys electronics. It might take some time but we've already seen brake master cylinder caps melt (recall: added shielding) purge valves fail (recall: added foil tape to valve) evap cannisters melt and catch fire (recall: added foil tape to evap cannister) and parking brake cables melt and sieze (recall: added foil tape to parts of cable).

Want to start a poll on what part suffers from heat damage next?

There's too much heat. It's not the case of too little foil tape. It's gonna look like we're afraid aliens are reading our thoughts with all this foil tape everywhere.

I find myself looking at the new RT. Not because of the great new engine and transmission... but because I want to get away from all these 2013 issues.

Reduce the heat. Increase air. Fix the problem.

I certainly wouldn't want to own a 2013 past the 2 year warranty. If they don't fix this, there will be so much bitching in another 14 months or so as the warranties start wearing out and all the parts start failing from heat fatigue.

+1 i agree

Im all for a trade in program that would provide 3000.00 in cash if you trade the bike in. It would be mailed to the buyer after the deal. Something like a form to fill out and just provide VIN at time of purchase and proof of trade in.. That way you could eliminate the dealer messing with the sale price a time of trade. That would be a deal for sure And the dealer could take the 3000.00 only if he showed you where it was applied to the actual bottom line.

Actually 3000.00 isn't really enough to help in the loss of value that we have witnessed. It would have to be more like 5000.00

Well said! I don't want a new bike I just want a safe bike that's going to last a while for the money spent. My bike is new I just don't want to whole bunch of issues down the road

Value of 2013 RT Limited used: 19,000 (check ebay)
Cost of 2014 RT Limited OTD - 33,000
Deficit 14,000
BRP Vaproware Rebate 3,000
Cost to buyer 11,000
Insurace bump 500/yr
Total Hit 11,500

Never mind a new round of farkles

No way.

This happens with every vehicle, its called 'planned obsolescence'. Also I think some of you are irrational about fear of 'death' and 'catching fire' etc, and that does us no good.
2 fires out of hundreds of thousands of vehicles ????

What year is yours?

I seriously doubt that BRP has sold "hundreds of thousands" of Spyders. I may be biased since I owned one of the Spyders that caught on fire and while I don't think people need to live in fear of theirs catching fire, I think they should all consider the possibility that it could happen to them.

I have one of these 2013s that some folks are crying about, i have had no problems to date (7,200 miles). And minimal heat issues. I just want you to know that not all the 2013s are bad.

1- BRP Made the wrong production decision on the affected 2013,s- Its Not your fault-You Don, t owe them anything if you have a heat affected Spyder. They owe it to YOU to make it right or give you a model that is Not defective or your $$$ Back.

2. As I have said All along IFI had gotten a 2013 Lemon in CT my case would have been in Court LONG AGO!!!

Whether they take a Big Hit Financially on the 2013,s is of NO concern to anyone- Getting what you paid for and are Due IS!!!

Honestly after a terrible front end issue ordeal (which mine is perfect now) i am happy with my 2013 EXCEPT that it will roast you chestnuts. I don't want to ruin my exhaust by wrapping the pipes and I am not into wrapping the underside of my bike with heat tape. So if BRP comes up with an actual fix then I will try it. But until then I will just have to suffer...

My husband rode from Las Vegas to Maggie Valley on his Honda ST1300 and he stood on the pegs about half way across the country to keep his "chestnuts" from roasting. It isn't just the Spyder.

There are not "hundreds of thousands of spyders" sold. A recent article in Ultimate Motorcycle Cycling indicated "Bombardier Recreational Products (BRP) has recalled 5,042 of its 2013 Can-Am Spyder RT and ST series motorcycles due to brake-fluid issues."
You have been extremely critical in the past of other member posts for being inaccurate or unnecessary (in your view), so work on getting your own facts straight for a change!
:gaah:

For those having documented heat issues (such as flamingobabe), hang in there until you get some satisfaction from BRP. Many of us are closely following your posts and want to see you (and others) taken care of by BRP!! No doubt these are legitimate and potentially serious concerns that should be addressed asap. As fellow spyderlovers, we stand with you!

But for those few 2013 owners who have not experienced any heat damage but yet insist on obsessing whether your ryde will spontaneously combust at any moment, I don't see any solution other than moving on to a different ryde, spyder or otherwise. A few seem convinced that their ryde is not safe and I doubt BRP nor anyone on this forum can do anything to convince you differently. Many posters have already tried to offer assurances based on their experiences and lack of heat problems, but we see the same few members post the same concerns over and over again about "what might happen".
:banghead: You owe it to yourself to find something that you believe is truly safe or else you will never be happy with your spyder.

If I felt my 2013 ST was truly unsafe, I would get rid of it, period. Maybe I will at some point, but thus far I am very happy with my ryde.
